Gah Angry this made me so angry. The poor "rich" men who are so taken by these harlots they completely forget they also hold the key to looking after their own contraception.
The poor men are lured into bed, unprotected.

So, So, angry.

(I read feminism a lot, and have learned A LOT but I may have only posted one or two times. Hi!)

I wonder if these men are so incapable of looking after their own contraception, what are the chances they get tested regularly for STD's? (The women too). Pregnancy isn't the only complication of unprotected sex, but articles like this never mention that.

And saying "some" women will try to get pregnant is such a cop out. Give me a statistic, a number. "Some" means what? 5,10,100,10,000? Are we in the grips of an epidemic? But of course, it's a non story with no aim other than to bash women yet again. No basis of fact. Nicely done by having a female lawyer being the one doing the talking, so they "can't" be accused of women bashing. It really should be renamed Daily Fail.

Er, as far as I'm aware the current advice on contraception is very much 'belt and braces' - so condoms AND the pill/coil/injection/whatever. That's even if you're in a long-term relationship.

You don't want kids? Double up, sweetpea.

Who are these men who think 'well, I don't know her so well, I haven't known her that long, but a condom? A CONDOM?! Don't be so bloody ridiculous'? Who are these people who don't go to the GUM clinic before flinging barrier contraceptives to the wind?

Half of me doesn't think they exist - they're just made up by the DM so that they can perpetuate the myth that we're all harlots who just want to suck the cash from the bank accounts of men (because men hold all the money, natch).

susiedaisy · 06/02/2012 20:17

That article was dreadful and so inaccurate Angry

mathanxiety · 06/02/2012 20:15

Not using condoms in marriage and expecting your partner to take the responsibility for contraception all the time is a form of taking the piss, imo. But horses for courses. If it has been discussed and all parties are fine with it then it's none of my business.

But for a grown man having sex with some ravishing young piranha, sorry, a condom is essential. Even a not so well off man, and not so old either. Nothing to do with trust. It's common sense. If it is so self evident Hmm that some women do deliberately try to get pregnant then it should make even more sense to use a condom.

The article was the most scurrilous piece of misogyny I have ever read. I thought I could predict what it might say based on where it came from, but I am gobsmacked at the hatred and fear.

AaaarghAgain · 06/02/2012 19:13

I was interested to hear what people thought TBE, there's no need to be so condescending. Not using condoms within a marriage IS a form of trust.

math - yes, obviously vasectomy would be the way to go. I was just giving a scenario. And yes, I have deviated a little from the subject...I agree that the men in those cases SHOULD have worn condoms, but I was raising the point that some women do deliberately try to become pregnant, so the article may have had an element of truth to it.

We are not talking about a situation where there are DPs married for ten years. We are talking about piranhas, man-eating women luring innocent men into fatherhood.

And in any case, a man who doesn't want children should surely be thinking of a vasectomy and not putting his wife through all the bother of the coil, flooding her system with artificial hormones for ten+ years, etc.

AaaarghAgain · 06/02/2012 19:00

#What are you on about Aaaaarrgghh? If a man does not wish to father a child, he should either wear a condom every time he has sex or have a vasectomy.

But what if his DP/DW has TOLD him that contraception is sorted? I'm really not trying to be obtuse here. Should he STILL wear condoms?

TheCrackFox · 06/02/2012 19:00

If he doesn't want children he should have a vasectomy. Plenty of men have made that choice. It is free on the NHS.

AaaarghAgain · 06/02/2012 18:56

So a women has been married for 10 years to a man who doesn't want children, and is on the pill/coil fitted etc, wouldn't be at all offended by the fact that he always wears condoms despite the fact that he knows she is on the pill?

Being a grown up means trusting the ones we love surely?

mathanxiety · 06/02/2012 18:50

(What TheCrackFox said, Aaaargh.)

KRITIQ · 06/02/2012 18:47

What are you on about Aaaaarrgghh? If a man does not wish to father a child, he should either wear a condom every time he has sex or have a vasectomy. It really is that simple. This may come as a surprise to you but guess what - many couples in long term relationships, even married couples use condoms or one of the partners is sterilised. That certainly doesn't mean one doesn't trust the other. On the contrary, it means they are being open and honest with each other about their fertility choices. Gee, who'da thunk it?

TheCrackFox · 06/02/2012 18:44

"should he always use condoms, regardless"

Yes. It is called being a grown up.

AaaarghAgain · 06/02/2012 18:38

?????

mathanxiety · 06/02/2012 18:36

Aaaargh --

Aaaaaaarrrrrrgh.

Missbabyheaversham · 06/02/2012 18:30

Goodness knows how those poor old men got so rich if they are incapable of working out how to use a condom.

AaaarghAgain · 06/02/2012 18:26

Yes I agree...but what if he was led to believe that she was using contraception? Should he always wear condoms regardless? It would certainly make his DW or DP feel that he didn't trust her, which can't be healthy surely.

I think it was a non-article in the Mail, and was biased against women, but even so, maybe for a proportion of those women it was true.

SensitivityChip · 06/02/2012 18:26

Oh God, I wish I lived in a world where having a baby or two was an easy option. Grin

mathanxiety · 06/02/2012 18:21

There is no guarantee that stopping the pill will result in pregnancy. Sometimes it takes a few cycles to regain fertility.

Wallowing in the sh^t? That is how many women of my mother's generation were raised to see themselves imo. Unworthy of respect, second class citizens -- and they were raised to think of men as weaklings who were nevertheless somehow ordained to rule the world. Neither sex got a fair shake back then.

mathanxiety · 06/02/2012 18:18

Sadly, my mum (almost 80) and many of her friends use phrases like 'she got herself pregnant' to describe single mothers in general and how their situation came about. When pressed to explain exactly how this could happen, they come out with tripe like this article and conveniently forget the facts of life.

fuzzywuzzy · 06/02/2012 18:14

Aaarghagain- Surely a man who does not wish to have the responsibility of fatherhood, should take charge of his own fertility, no ?

AaaarghAgain · 06/02/2012 18:10

So you don't believe that a small proportion of women deliberately get pregnant? That they don't 'forget' to take the pill.

cartimandua · 06/02/2012 18:01

My elderly father reads the Daily Heil so I have a look when I go to see him for the same reason you do, Sunshine. The sheer unabashed poisonousness amazes me, but what really upsets me is that the lies and half-truths clearly upset and worry my dad. I have tried to explain that he shouldn't believe most of what he reads but he's almost 90 and though perfectly compos mentis I think his powers of discrimination aren't what they used to be. And the Heil is so insidiously clever at scaremongering and then coming up with "solutions" for these imaginary situations.

sunshineandbooks · 06/02/2012 15:32

I read the Daily Mail on a daily basis. I also read the Guardian and the Independent at the same time (well not at exactly the same time because that would be impossible, but you get the gist).

It pays to be aware of what you're up against IMO. Grin It's also truly fascinating to see the different spin put on the same story depending on the prevailing ethos.

I sincerely hope that many of the DM's readers are like me, rather than believing what they read without question. MN is predominantly left-wing for example but directs an awful lot of links to the DM site. Wink

sportsfanatic · 06/02/2012 15:15

Isn't it amazing that the Daily Fail Wail has a predominantly female readership? Or is it? Is there something intrinsically masochistic about some women that makes them want to wallow in this sh*t? Lack of self-esteem maybe?
