I work all day and night as a SAHM. Would rather sit around on my arse.
And of course im 'economically active'. I spend the money dh earns on food/bills/etc.
Plus, as a Carer, I save the 'taxpayer' £3000 a week by Caring for my brain damaged relative instead of parking her in an institution. Which would be a lot easier.

SardineQueen · 05/02/2012 11:49

Do you also feel this way about people who are independently wealthy, live off a large tract of land that they pay other people to manage, and so on?

Lots of people don't "work" - are they all betraying their sex? So men who don't work due to extreme wealth in the family - are they betraying the male sex?

Or do you reserve this for women who have children?

scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 11:48

Being free to work to maintain an unwaged adult,it is hardly cushy is it
To have sole financial responsibility is a pretty honorable and decent thing.the act of providing a security and broadband for the housewife too

BasilRathbone · 05/02/2012 11:48

Before I hide thread, have to respond to the stuff about WAGS being non-working mothers.

Firstly they did actually carry and bear their children - that's work. That's why it's called labour.

Secondly, they do less work than other mothers, I broadly agree.

However, they still do more work than their husbands.

No-one's going to convince me that Wayne Rooney, John Terry and the rest of those skanky shaggers, work for a living. They work their bodies (so do their WAGs) and then they kick a ball around for 90 minutes. If you're going to claim their WAGs don't work (and I broadly agree with that) then let's look at what they do whcih is called work and which is so handsomely rewarded, unlike their WAGs. I think waxing, working out and putting lipstick on in the correct manner, must be at least as taxing as push ups, kicking a ball and penetrating prostituted women for a living.

scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 11:45

Rubbish not all mums work or graft
Youre in goddess territory now
Simply being mum doesn't automatically make one hard working or imbued with mumsy understanding

BasilRathbone · 05/02/2012 11:44

No such thing as a non-working mother.

Every mother works. Bringing up children is work. Just because men don't do the day to day work of it, it's been deemed not to be work. That way, they can get it done for free by someone else, while they're free to pursue their leisure and employment interests.

Women who deny women's work, are betraying their sex IMO. HTH OP.

scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 11:44

Wags, media hanger ons,Kerry katona they are all non working mums
Not all mums work self to the bone
Being mum doesn't confer some social status.it just means you've popped a sprog

CarrieInAnotherTWOBabiTWINS · 05/02/2012 11:41

lol, at the idea of any non working mother.

very rude op. akin to asking if wohm are betraying their children.

0/10 op

scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 11:39

You're making two unrelated points
1 some psychobabble about attachment?
2 something about is worth a moneytary consideration ( depends on what you consider worth and it's remuneration)

coccyx · 05/02/2012 11:35

how can there be no bond between mother and child. Someones worth/value is not based entirely on monetary value surely

Labradorlover · 05/02/2012 11:32

OP do you have a problem with all SAHM or just the ones claimimg benefits?
With nearly 3 million unemployed, IMO SAHM are contributing by not entering the jobs market.
There is also a lack of jobs which make working and paying for childcare actually worthwhile.
Many low paid PT workers will not be paying tax. So economically active, but does that count as contributing?

scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 11:31

But presumably your happy for your waged partner to support you financially
?or if he/she said ah this is over rated I'm packing in work..you'd support that?

EnjoyResponsibly · 05/02/2012 11:31

Never Andi how about Wine

AndiMac · 05/02/2012 11:29

I'm a stay-at-home mother because working for a living is overrated.

Is it too early for some more popcorn?

EnjoyResponsibly · 05/02/2012 11:23

Lorcana I'm sure you will have noticed that it's quite difficult for everyone to be economically active currently, even if they want to be and even if they have to be.

It is also some people's choice to be a SAHP. In my case my husband goes to work and I look after my son. We do not need to claim assistance to do that. We assessed our circumstances and decided that is what we wanted for our family. I can assure you fully that I could certainly not be described as a challenge to the economy.

I also have no issue with parents who chose to work.

I think every family has a right to decide what is best for their family under their circumstances.

lorcana · 05/02/2012 11:12

We could ask that question HISTORY.... Why not ?

OP posts:
molly3478 · 05/02/2012 11:05

TBH I have no problem with people staying at home if they can afford it,but working in childcare is way harder than having your own. I am going on maternity leave again in a few weeks and to me its a big long holiday. Being at work I find hard at times but I dont think being at home is difficult, even with newborns personally.

historyrepeats · 05/02/2012 11:01

Wow I feel powerful, I am betraying you all without even knowing. Shock

We could reverse your question Op and ask are all working mothers betraying their children? but that would be just as stupid

lorcana · 05/02/2012 10:55

Even CHILDCARER

OP posts:
lorcana · 05/02/2012 10:54

Should not ALL adults aspire to be economically active ? Being a parent is NOT a job - child rearing is part of most adults lives and should it be used as an excuse not to work and contribute ? There is no 'bond' between mothers as far as I can see any more than a bond beteween people with blonde hair ! I am interested in the rationale/reasoning behind decisions not to work and to substitute parenting for an economically active role. Also why it provokes such anger and defensiveness ? Btw working as a chilcarer is totally different to parenting. How CAN people see it in same way ?

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 10:20

You'll go far on mn with that approach
Well done

EnjoyResponsibly · 05/02/2012 10:18

YES! The OP asked a question, I answered it.

scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 10:16

What direct question,the op?

newbiedoobiedoo · 05/02/2012 10:15

There's no such thing as a "non-working mother". And I don't see it as wasting your education either for that matter. It's a choice, like anything else. Mind your own business! :)

EnjoyResponsibly · 05/02/2012 10:15

I don't know what bumping gums means Scottishmummy. I have answered a direct question with a direct answer.
