For R.S i have been asked to think, and collect, 10 key points WHY women have suffered from sexism in the past. I can think of HOW, but I am interested in WHY. I would be really interseted and grateful in any thoughts you may have! Thanks!

If you can find me a better one that incorporates Le and BOF, Nickel, I'll change- but frankly this is my best bet so far to oust that bastard AnyfuckerForAMincePie Xmas Grin

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 06/12/2011 16:17

why would he lay subtle symbols? why not just come out and say, misogyny is wrong?

it's all very tenuous.

SirCliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 06/12/2011 16:16

Mine is better.

Will the birth be virginial?

nickelbabe · 06/12/2011 16:08

LeBOF- i have just seen your christmas name.
You have to change it now.

My christmas name is going to be basically what you have stolen from me (and I organised mine last year ready to go this year, and it took me ages to come up with it)
and i'm 10 days overdue, so i'm hormonal and very pissed off.

SirCliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 06/12/2011 16:08

oops, sorry. Did I kill it?

Can you pass me my coat too Lettle?

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 16:07

Too far?

SirCliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 06/12/2011 15:50

She was a virgin as was the culture at the time, nothing more than that and in fact I think the word virgin was only mentioned once. It certainly wasn't dwelt upon, more to make the point that the baby was not Joseph's.

The catholic church believe that she always a virgin as they see virginity as being pure and sexuality as bad - I remember having an all-out argument with a priest about this. But it is inconceivable (see what I did there?) to think that she would have remained married to Joseph and not had a healthy sexual relationship with him. Also lots of evidence that he had brothers and sisters. In fact it would have been expected at that time I think, for Mary to have a large family.

LEttle, the fact that he spent so much time with Martha and Mary discussing scripture with them shows how much he respected their opinions and thoughts.

The woman at the well, who was having an affair, was the first person Jesus revealed his true self to.

Then after the resurrection he visited Mary first, not Peter or any of the men. I like to think that these are powerful symbols purposely laid down by Jesus of the importance of women. There are probably more that have been taken out of the gospels for being irrelevant. The gospels we know are only a fraction of the entire writings. Does anyone know who compiled the gospels? Other than a man?

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:49

Alright, you've twisted my arm...

Mary: "I'm so sorry mum- i didnt think I'd get pregnant if The Holy Spirit just came on my tits..."

Ann: "How many times have I told you not to trust Divine Beings? I got bloody pregnant after the menopause!"

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:47

oh come on, that would be his favourite bit. Smut and inappropriateness are staples in this house.

OP posts:
LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:44

Oh Edgar, I so want to reply to that remark with a barrel of smut, but I am mindful of our young audience

Still, there's always PM...

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:41

It was a Golden Shower I beleive. Say no more.

I had never made the connection bewteen that and the Holy Spirit before.

My personal faves are the Oestre ones. I love choccy eggs and crucifixes.

EdlessAllenPoe · 06/12/2011 15:39

"I think the Holy Spirit came upon her,"

tsk tsk, pornification of The Bible...

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:38

I think the Holy Spirit came upon her, iirc, Hully. Which is pre-dated by the Myth of Zeus and Danäe, and him impregnating her as a shower of rain. It's interesting how much crossover there is in religious stories, isn't it?

EdlessAllenPoe · 06/12/2011 15:38
Grin
SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 06/12/2011 15:36

because of the virgin/whore stuff hully. bad women have sex, good women are virgins.

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:35

That's right, it was "virgin" as in young girl...amazing how it went from there to God was the dad.

OP posts:
LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:35

Now you are reminding me of that MNer whose husband suggested riding through the Middle East on a second-hand motorbike just after their baby was born, Edgar: "AIBU to expect dh not to fuck off with his twelve beardy mates on a tour of Jordan and Syria leaving me with a newborn?" Xmas Grin

Come to think of it, that baby was born in a very dramatic snowed-in air-sea rescue scenario, and I think it was GPS positioning that guided the wise men medical professionals rather than a star, but hey...

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:34

OH yes! I forgot that one.

OP posts:
EdlessAllenPoe · 06/12/2011 15:33

well, there may be an element of mistranslation there too..'parthenos' = girl....virgin would depend how quickly she could run :)

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:30

What was the importance of the Virgin Birth? Just because God was The Daddy?

OP posts:
Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:30

He had lil bubbas - it was in that film

OP posts:
EdlessAllenPoe · 06/12/2011 15:29

Jesus was a Jew, so he very definitely would have been married by the time he was thirty, if his mother had anything to do with it...

it wouldn't be mentioned, because it would be like mentioning the sky was blue - a total given.

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:24

I think they do Sad

But really, seriously, where is the fun, what's to like, and what is the point of just trading personal accusations? That's what I don't get. It makes me feel a bit ill, like being a kid and your parents screaming

I think there is a world of difference between passive-aggressive and being polite.

OP posts:
LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:19

I don't think I've seen much actual PARD on mumsnet, Hully, that doesn't end up being more Passive Aggressive than Polite and Reasonable. But to be honest, if PARD really did win out, the internet would wither and die- I think people like a bit of a ruckus.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 06/12/2011 15:18

I clearly can't keep up with this thread so will bow out!
