Perfect Wife Syndrome

Sex on demand. Dinner on the table (or in front of the TV, if he prefers). Why, after decades of battling for equality, do some of Britain's most successful women put their man's needs first?

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2058421/Why-Britains-successful-woman-developed-Perfect-Wife-Syndrome.html

"A successful barrister from Manchester, she?s barely had time to eat since breakfast and longs to just collapse in front of the TV with a ready meal.
Instead, the moment she arrives home, she showers, changes into a pretty wrap‑dress and makes sure the wine is chilling and a casserole is bubbling in the oven before her husband James, 40, arrives home from the office.
If he wants sex later, she?ll happily comply. They won?t discuss her day. Instead, Caroline will listen supportively while James recounts the details of what he did at work."

Sounds a lot like Fascinating Womanhood to me!

just googled it as well.
what was your one doing writing books in the first place - couldn't she get a man? Hmm

as with all dangerous ideas there's enough truth to reel people in. of course show your partner you appreciate them, etc, just shows the dangers of extremism. extreme femininity.

blobtobetter · 08/11/2011 21:11

I think fascinating girlhood is the same book but with a dating section.

Hide who you are when dating then hide who you are FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Sounds nuts.

Fascinating womanhood gets my first ever Biscuit

I have a friend who has bought into this concept wholeheartedly and she's married to a selfish knob of the highest order but refuses to see it's not her that needs changing.

I noticed there's even a fascinating girlhood 'because it's never too early to start' Angry

What utter utter damaging shite!

SnapesMistress · 08/11/2011 20:49

How could anyone be happy suppressing themselves like that.

Also good point Sinecal I know my DP would hate me to be like that, if you act like that you cannot be an equal partner in life. I would simply not be interesting to him if everything I did or said was about him. You are making yourself into a glorified housekeeper.

JeanBodel · 08/11/2011 20:28

I've just glanced at a couple of her books for sale on Amazon and would like to apply for a total mind wipe, please.

Very disturbing.

KRITIQ · 08/11/2011 20:17

All sounds so dishonest and deceptive.

SinicalSal · 08/11/2011 18:03

'fascinating' sounds boring as fuck to me to either live or live with.

(not taking pride in homemaking obv, or putting yourself out for your partner but to the exclusion of all else)

blobtobetter · 08/11/2011 17:52

It all sounds a bit frilly to me but people run their whole lives by that book and must change their personality to fit. Makes me wonder if they are happy living the Fascinating Womanhood way.

I'm buggered then blob Grin. When dh brings dd back from Brownies we are having fish and chips.

blobtobetter · 08/11/2011 17:25

Hadn't heard about Debi Pearl and child beating - I thought she had written a book for wives as helpmeets to their husbands?

From a blog I read quoting Fascinating Womanhood -

"The Domestic Goddess adds feminine touches to her homemaking - gingham curtains, a basket of fruit, soft pillows, a cozy rug at the door, flowers, a row of plates above a cross beam, cheerful wallpaper - to give a homey feeling to the house. She adds feminine touches to her meals - cheerful tablecloths, pretty dishes and delicious aromas."

'The secret of awakening his willingness is Feminine Dependency'

Super.

"I love, love, love your book and have gotten fabulous results from practicing its principles. The only problem I have is that my husband will not let me quit work. And I am wearing out! Do you have any suggestions? He makes enough for us to live on. I didn't mind working when I was not trying to clean the house or look nice myself, but seriously, I am wearing out and getting stress acne, and would LOVE to be a fabulous woman instead of a second-rate one who makes money too. My husband could even make more money, but thinks it wouldn't be fair for him to do all the money-making. Any help you could give me would be so, so appreciated!"

OMFG! This woman should be shot at dawn!

SinicalSal · 08/11/2011 16:59

But what bout the menz???

How awful it would be to be so alone in your marriage, responsible for all decisions, responsible for the finances, no one to talk to of an evening. Grim lets-get-this-over-with sex rather than a bit of passion and fun. unable to admit to vulnerabilities or be silly. Unable to catch your breath knowing the other grown up competent adult can hold the fort for a bit.

Who would want that type of life?

Serious point, despite tongue in cheek catchphrasing.

Portofino · 08/11/2011 16:52

"I then step back and let him make a decision while I pray about it. " Shock! FFS!

HazleNutt · 08/11/2011 15:27

How to handle arguments: Exaggerate: Exaggerate his treatment of you by saying, for example, ?How can a great big man like you pick on a poor little helpless girl like me!?

Yes, that would work well, my Dh would piss himself laughing.

and from the author: "A wife must make her husband feel masculine. When women do men?s jobs, men feel threatened, home life gets disrupted, and marriages are ruined. I would never do anything to undermine my husband?s masculinity, including working outside the home."

Who controls the money?

My husband controls the money.
If I want something, I tell my husband and explain why it would be useful to me. I then step back and let him make a decision while I pray about it.

Are you spenders or savers?

I don?t know whether we?re spenders or savers.

what a lovely life indeed Hmm

sunshineandbooks · 08/11/2011 15:24

I wonder if we'd see the divorce rate plummet if there was a perfect husband syndrome...

SnapesMistress · 08/11/2011 15:07

The most terrifying part, I find, is the way women are encouraged to be childlike. You are supposed to develop childlike characteristics ans this will make you happier (don't worry your pretty little head) and make your husband love you more (presumably because he can call all the shots.)

Am Shock

Rollon2012 · 08/11/2011 14:20

Thats actually a very good post wamster.

I also agree with an abouve post , how if this was some uneducated estate dwelling SAHm i doubt the daily mail would feels its an awful thing.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 08/11/2011 14:05

Oh my good god, I just looked a the fascinating woman blog. It is possibly the most shocking thing I have read in a while. It reminds me of The Handmaid's Tale, terrifying stuff.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 08/11/2011 13:50

Ha, I'm a SAHM and I don't do any of that! I must be seriously underachieving Grin

letitwork · 08/11/2011 13:40

"When women who are relying upon a man for income behave like this, I feel sorrow but at the same time can understand that being financially dependent can erode confidence and self-esteem."

Portofino · 08/11/2011 13:23

I am refusing to click on a DM link - after the Amanda Knox fiasco I swore I would never venture there again no matter how tempting......Sounds like a load of shite though - I think they have a whole bunch of these women lined up to spout crap on quiet news days.....

sakura · 08/11/2011 13:17

Hi Mooncup! Thank you!

Wamster · 08/11/2011 12:27

I remember Jerry Hall coming out with a smug, nonsense statement about a woman being a whore in the bedroom, cook in the kitchen and maid in the sitting room. Didn't stop Sir Mick screwing around. I think I prefer the genuine wisdom of fellow 70's supermodel Marie Helvin who said that no matter how good she looked, her ex David Bailey would still screw around because NEWSFLASH there are OTHER beautiful women in the world.

MooncupGoddess · 08/11/2011 12:15

sakura, how nice to see you back!

I can't take these articles seriously, they are just too ridiculous. Reminds me of the classic thread in the Relationships section when a poster decided the problems in her marriage were due to her being too assertive. She read The Surrendered Wife and followed its guidelines as gospel for about three weeks. Then she realised her husband was, actually, an arse and the marriage ended shortly thereafter.
