Perfect Wife Syndrome

Sex on demand. Dinner on the table (or in front of the TV, if he prefers). Why, after decades of battling for equality, do some of Britain's most successful women put their man's needs first?

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2058421/Why-Britains-successful-woman-developed-Perfect-Wife-Syndrome.html

"A successful barrister from Manchester, she?s barely had time to eat since breakfast and longs to just collapse in front of the TV with a ready meal.
Instead, the moment she arrives home, she showers, changes into a pretty wrap‑dress and makes sure the wine is chilling and a casserole is bubbling in the oven before her husband James, 40, arrives home from the office.
If he wants sex later, she?ll happily comply. They won?t discuss her day. Instead, Caroline will listen supportively while James recounts the details of what he did at work."

Sounds a lot like Fascinating Womanhood to me!

and they're religious it's like, doubly, oh idk, can't think of a word.. creepy

LIke, it's supposed to be kinky, but then it's got religious undertones and Christian men backing the lifestyle. I can understand them backing the subservience, but then they're backing the BDSM themes as well..

I would have thought that the least Christian women cold expect was respect for their piety and goodness and prayer.. but it looks like the gloves are off now.

Then again, most sensible women always suspected that the Man in the Sky was created as a way of subordinating women, and that most of his proponents didn'T really believe in him anyway, or didn't care if he existed as long as they could use the possibility of his existence to keep women subservient to them

EleanorRathbone · 13/11/2011 20:26

What's really striking about that, is how fragile masculinity is supposed to be.

If men are so big and strong and superior, surely his wife working won't undermine that?

sportsfanatic · 13/11/2011 18:34

"A wife must make her husband feel masculine. When women do men?s jobs, men feel threatened, home life gets disrupted, and marriages are ruined. I would never do anything to undermine my husband?s masculinity, including working outside the home."

A man whose masculinity is undermined by a woman working outside the home isn't a man - he is a massively insecure wimp. What woman could respect a "man" like that?

duchesse · 13/11/2011 17:44

Equality does not benefit Zeta men, those with the most to lose from gender equality. So women who agree to go along with this shit, including and especially successful surrendered barristers from Manchester, are actually aiding and abetting cretins to climb than they ought to be able to.

WhollyGhost · 13/11/2011 17:29

agree duchesse

also, too often a woman's self sacrifice is not really the best solution

if we were not so apt to compromise we'd more often find ourselves in win-win situations, which would be better for all involved

Oh do please excuse me while I vom copiously all over your nice shiny kitchen floor...

Is this for real? Please someone tell me it isn't so Shock

ChickenLickn · 13/11/2011 17:26

Equality is better for all of us, women and men included, because it enables both to maximise the use of their unique talents.

I have noticed that women raise standards at work, they challenge men who may be coasting, in sometimes unexpected ways.

Xenia · 13/11/2011 17:25

Yes too many women compromise which is why they end up abandoned and with no money. In a sense they damage their children by taking the option of being at home as when the man leaves them as 50% do their children suffer due to no money. In a sense it is a selfish choice to be a housewife.

duchesse · 13/11/2011 16:25

That taken in hand is some scary shit. The scariest part is that presumably these misfits actually find women willing to go along with this crap.

duchesse · 13/11/2011 16:23

My core belief is that women shouldn't settle for anything. We are always too apt to compromise, or be the one doing the compromising. Less compromise seems to be expected of men by society on the whole. The more women compromise, the more it lets incompetent bastards off the hook. The less competition able women provide, the less hard the men have to try and the closer we all get to hell in a hand basket.

You can never wheel [ this]] too often imo.

malinois · 13/11/2011 16:15

sinical I think that xenia's argument that women should refuse to enter traditional women's occupations such as nursing and instead go for the high status jobs is based on the idea that this would pull up the status and pay of those traditional occupations due to the labour scarcity.

In reality employers would simply not stand for it and simply employ cheap labour from abroad.

duchesse · 13/11/2011 16:15

"70% of women admit they get satisfaction from doing the laundry and mopping floors"

Dear sweet jeezus, who are these women???? I don't know any.

ChickenLickn · 13/11/2011 16:10

brr, sounds creepy.

blobtobetter · 13/11/2011 15:45

I wonder what happens to the women who leave everything to their husbands if something then happens to the husband and then they have to provide for themselves and their family.

Apart from the fact that I wouldn't have been very good at it, I could never have surrendered decision-making to XH, because he was an idiot with a tenuous relationship with Planet Earth. That dangly thing lurking in his trousers was all well and good for a bit of fun or a sneaky piss up a wall if there was no toilet nearby (or even, sometimes, when there was Hmm), but I can't say it made a noticeable difference to his intellect. I thought people kept brain cells in their heads, and last time I checked, I had one of those too.

blobtobetter · 13/11/2011 14:49

The blonde woman has a blog that I read sometimes and quite a few videos on youtube ..... she seems VERY into the 1950s wife thing.

Exactly - life changing. I now know my place - no more leaving the home for me!!

I am strangely fascinated by that sort of blog and article!

Even Pippa Middleton isn't wife material according to the daily fail.

blobtobetter, thank you so much for posting that.

I have seen the light.

My life has been suffused with anti-feminist enlightenment. I am now a better woman. Am now going to devote myself to finding a god-fearing christian husband who will hit me when I deserve it and show me with his gentle authority how much better people with penises are than people with vaginas.

Alleluia

Oh all right then, not really.

Grin

Just read this ( I like fundie type blogs)

quietness-and-gentleness.blogspot.com/2011/11/wednesdays-women-of-god-anti-feminists.html

Apparently she used to be a feminist but changed her mind.

Hmm.

Debi Pearl, a woman who advocates child abuse.

Not a particularly trustworthy source of advice about relationships, is she?

Xenia · 12/11/2011 18:44

There's nothing wrong with both people being nice to each other of course.

Whey does she get home before her man?

The examples given are very funny - Nancy Del O is single as presumably no one will have her. The property show woman has a second best divorced man with children who will not even marry her - which just goes to show how "successful" their geisha stance is and the Mad Man girl illustrating it has just had a baby out of wedlock without a man around.

Hopeykat · 12/11/2011 12:44

The Perfect Wife Syndrome died with Beaver Cleaver and the 1950's. Go to Greece, like the factitious Shirley Valentine, find someone that loves you for who you are, and not for what you have done for him lately, and be happy.

blobtobetter · 12/11/2011 08:58

There seems to be a bit of an obsession with the perfect 50's housewife thing. There was the Anthea Turner stuff, all the aprons and retro fashions even the twee bits and cupcakes have been classed as kind of longing for the past and traditional roles.

I almost want to read the book! Looking on Amazon there are quite a few books similar to this one for women and girls. Plenty are American and religious.

Preparing to be a Helpmeet by Debi Pearl, quite a few how to be a lady books and even things like Raising Maidens of Virtue, So Much More and Joyfully at Home. They all seem to be about getting rid of the bits of your character that make you less than this polished 50's ideal but also getting rid of individuality.
