I remember at ante-natal classes when I was expecting DD, they showed the BF video - anyone seen that one?

And I was totally struck by how the breasts all looked, well, 'imperfect'.

Then I realised something: I had never seen real breasts before.

Only inflated implant chests in magazines etc.

Up until that day I thought I had freakish deformed boobs which only surgery could "cure".

I was 25 and thought I was hideously deformed. Makes me feel sad and angry, isn't this the worst kind of misogyny, engendering self-loathing in women, turning us against our own bodies?

I haven't got any, but I think "I have nice breasts" is a far healthier attitude than "I have ugly saggy wrinkled breasts that don't look like nice fake ones"

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 04/11/2011 02:10

I agree TT, hence my proviso (thanks Toffee!), but on the flip side it is also nice to read of people being happy with their bodies, describing them in a positive way; rather than deriding them or dieting/whatever them into submission.

Plus for all we know, their definition of 'nice' might not be the accepted definition, so even more good for them if they're happy.

Toffeefudgecake · 03/11/2011 22:03

Tei - that's a good point, although I think anyone on this thread who has said they have 'nice breasts' has qualified it (eg. Slinking says hers look great 'if you consider run of the mill boobs that fall into that fairly narrow ideal to look good'). Apart from Porceleine, maybe.

TeiTetua · 03/11/2011 21:07

Not to accuse anyone of political incorrectness, but if we let a statement "I have nice breasts" pass, then the implication is that others don't have nice breasts. And once that distinction is admitted, doesn't it open the way to Page 3? And with it the strange fact that women, and men too, can actually be unfamiliar with the appearance of "normal" breasts (alias not-so-nice breasts) because they aren't the kind that get onto Page 3--and a sad comment that it's how we get familiar with breasts in the first place.

KristinaM · 03/11/2011 12:06

I read soem research on this and IIRC the risk factors were

Number of pregnancies
Obesity
Smoking
Size of breast
Genetics

sozzledchops · 02/11/2011 20:09

i came out of extended BF 2 babies with my boobs not that different from before pregnancy. Think it's down to luck and genetics, pity the rest of me didn't fair so well.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 02/11/2011 17:36

I'm still b/feeding no. 2 (15 MO) and I have fab boobs. Pregnancy didn't affect them at all - neither of my pregnancies - they didn't get smaller or bigger, but breast-feeding didn't affect them either. The only thing that did affect them a tiny bit was the incredible weight-loss I had as result, at least in part, from breast-feeding. I am now back to my teenage/early 20s weight, and a C-cup.

Actually, I tell a small lie - my nipples were the size of saucers during pregnancy, but reverted back to normal during the course of b/feeding.

So yes, mine look great (if you consider run of the mill boobs that fall into that fairly narrow ideal to look good) and did a wonderful thing.

PigletJohn · 02/11/2011 16:15

Grrrr, bl**y women complaining that normal breasts are ugly.

I've heard that those weird, artificial ones are mostly chosen by women who think they look better than real ones.

I don't believe the pressure for artificality comes from men.

sozzledchops · 02/11/2011 14:10

you could be right Thankyou about the majority of women who are happier to show their breast falling into the 'normal' category. I can't remember ever seeing breasts like some of those on that link, maybe some women who don't have the 'expected' shape etc just hide them away more. Maybe we need to see more of breast, all types in a non sexual way to try and get 'real' breasts out here.

ThankyouWankyou · 02/11/2011 14:03

I still consider surgery for my chest. I think I always will.
DH has always maintained the apperance of my chest is the norm, even to the point of getting cross with me the other night, after I muttered some remark on how my breasts sit. Blush

Totally true about the majority of those who go topless on the beach, in the changing rooms, and so on, have breasts that fit within the "aesthetically" pleasing category. Perky. Wether dinky sized or larger, the breasts are perky, with the nipple lying on/above the fatter end of the breast, as opposed to mine nearly resting on my tummy more underneath... If that makes any sense at all.
It must really make lot of women whose breasts aren't like that, feel abnormal with regards to how their breasts sit, which would make them reluctant to to bare themselves, and show themselves alongside the others. It did with me. Because there really is an absence of breasts like those in the gallery, regularly seen in public, and like the other poster who said, I would consider myself to be reasonably well travelled and what not.

Alot of those breasts pictured in the gallery are very similar to mine. Yet, that doesn't make me feel any better about myself, or give me any comfort in any way.

sozzledchops · 02/11/2011 12:46

it's just sad that with so many folk being displeased with their bodies due to ageing or media pressure and resorting to cosmetic surgery, will anyone in the future really know what a 'normal' body looks like or consider 'normal' bodies to be ugly. Sad for our children. The link was interesting - maybe they should make up billboards like that and plaster them all over the country.

PigletJohn · 31/10/2011 17:30

If my partner thought Page3 was normal, I would try and re-educate her.

VikingLady · 31/10/2011 16:41

Wow. Just dipped back into this thread after a few days away, and look what I missed! Would love to know what the deleted threads were!

Insults aside, my mum breastfed me and my brother, me for 1 year and my brother for 3.5. She didn't forcibly wean me - I just lost interest in milk and grabbed at her food more. My brother carried on for longer, and Mum was fine with that. Incidentally, if appearance matters that much, my mum has fab boobs compared to magazines. Perkier than mine, and I'm still pregnant with DD1, and 21 years younger than her. Luck of the draw.

If my partner thought Page3 was normal, I would try and re-educate him (it is string up trouble for the future - you can't stay looking young forever, look at Jackie Stallone). If not, I'd leave.

After laughing at his saggy, wrinkly testicles.

PigletJohn · 29/10/2011 15:48

the thing that I found very sad was

(picture of woman with fine, normal chest)
woman writes "I've always been depressed about having such ugly, saggy breasts..."

there were quite a few in similar vein.

Bunbaker · 29/10/2011 15:08

"I'm shocked if anyone here was surprised."

I can honestly say that I have never seen boobs like most of the ones on the link on the beach or at the swimming pool. Being somewhat flat of chest myself I am not familiar with the "normal" range. It goes back to what is shown in the media, and I agree that it is very damaging, especially when you get some women refusing to breastfeed for what is seen as a very trivial reason.

Trills · 29/10/2011 11:43

Well this looks interesting.

I see lots of boobs if I go to the gym, and on beaches in France and Spain I find it is the young girls with pointy-uppy boobs who are more likely to have them covered.

What's normal is a huge range of size, shape, nipple colour etc. What's shown in the media is a very narrow range.

It's not only damaging for girls to see a narrow range as the norm. Unfortunately the effect of widespread access to porn is starting to have the same kind of impact when it comes to vulvas.

It does show the power of the media.

strangerintheday · 29/10/2011 11:11

looks like someone is super proud of her breasts but neglects anything that's above the neckline...
oops

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 29/10/2011 10:36

Blimey, what happened? Shock

PacificDogwood · 28/10/2011 23:03

I am coming very late to this, but feel the need to say great website, thanks for linking to it Smile

I have seen and felt many breasts in my professional life (am a dr), so totally agree that the gallery is a good representation of what real breasts look like.

I happen to like mine, always have and (4 kids, BFing to varying degrees and now aged 45) I still do. They are not porno 'perfect' but they are mine, the feel nice (to me and to DH Wink) and they did their job when called for.

Op, YANBU of course.

How on earth did this descend into a bun fight??

I really wish we could like our bodies a bit more for what they are. I think if we did, we'd be more likely to make more healthy life choices tbh.

TeiTetua · 28/10/2011 22:46

It's very sad that so many of us are so familiar with the style of breasts as seen on Page 3, and so un-familiar with the real live ones that most women have. Even on a topless beach, "only the classically attractive girls went topless"! If our society didn't fetishise women's breasts so much, we might all come to understand what perfectly healthy and real (and attractive!) boobs are like. Well, fat chance of that.

PigletJohn · 28/10/2011 21:51

I don't normally come in here, but the ones on the link look perfectly normal , ordinary and attractive to me. I'm shocked if anyone here was surprised.

Ooh, first chance to get back to this thread and I see that there has been a bunfight which I missed. Can't read any of Porceleine's comments because they've all been deleted. Was I insulted for long-term breastfeeding, by any chance? It doesn't bother me - it's the norm in so many other countries and I think it's weird that our society thinks it odd.
