The departure of dittany

I only know that she has left, and in her post she didn't say much as to why, though some people can speculate and imagine why.

Quite a few days ago (last weekend I think) there were threads that pinpointed the lack of consideration that MNHQ has toward the sort of trolls that infest the FS section from time to time - different in nature and purpose to your average troll that infects MN from time to time.

It may well be that d. is in contact with regular posters whom she trusts. I don't know.

What I do know is that d. was a fabulous source of invigoration and illumination to a lot of posters, myself included, though we didn't always agree with her.

I would like a review from MNHQ of their current "talk guidlines" policy, in order that the FS is provided with a consideration that recognises the particular vulnerability that it experiences.

D. left for her own reasons - but this presents itself as a sort of 'test case' for MN to respond sensitively.

Would anyone agree and post here in support of this?

Porn used to get discussed on here loads, just not in the fem section because there wasn't one. And we all pretty much had to just put up with people disagreeing with us.

Actually, if you're looking for solutions, that's one radical suggestion - get rid of the section. MN could go back to being a place where feminist attitudes pervaded the board, and weren't hived off into a special section. And MRA targetting would be much less easy. (I would be sad to see it go myself, but then I find it easy to ignore trolls.)

You just know you could look in one ear and see out the other...

scottishmummy · 15/09/2011 23:35

mnhq has always advised circumspect and safe,we all recall the trolls and frauds who have maliciously caused hurt.and this is why posters shouldn't be lulled into a belief that mn or fem topic is safe and can discuss v personal harrowing circumstances without trolls or intrusion. the fem topic board are not any different to any other topic inc aibu.there may be an expectation/hope of different treatment but realistically how legitimate is it on an open discursive board?

AnyFucker · 15/09/2011 23:33

I said head not brain Wink

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 15/09/2011 23:32

What slhilly said... Grin

You can't accuse edd of having a brain without any evidence. It's not fair on him.

AnyFucker · 15/09/2011 23:32
Grin
slhilly · 15/09/2011 23:30

There's something in that head? If you're going to make wildly improbable assertions, AF, I do think you should show the evidence Wink

AnyFucker · 15/09/2011 23:29

why should dittany change her name to blend in better ?

that would be silly, because whatever scottishmummy says, she would be instantly recognisable anyway

and for that, I applaud her

No, edd. First, something needs to be done about the trolls who post misogyny, rape jokes, and tell us how we should run the feminism board. Ta muchly.

Pan · 15/09/2011 23:27

Sm - I'm trying to pick through that post!

tbh isn't about individuals, though I did name dittany in the OP as an example of what is happening to the FS, as I see it.

the FS discuss/ cover highly sensitive issues such as sexual assault, abortion, DV, child abuse, pornography, etc in a way that AIBU type sections simply don't at times.
Over in those sections it's often a 'yeah' or 'nay' - in the FS its usually given a wider, 'political' consideration i.e. why does this happen? , rather than 'what should I do in these circs.'? That bit of the discussion in FM provides a wider learning point. So FS trolls, IME, target the FS because of that reason - it empowers women in general rather than providing advise how to react in the specific.

Suffers not differs. Autocorrect

slhilly · 15/09/2011 23:27

"can she not just change her name?"

A basic tenet of feminism is that women should not have to modify their behaviour to avoid male aggression. She could, but should not have to.

SM, aibu is vv diff from feminism. You can't develop your knowledge or understanding of aibu, you can w feminism. It is much more like SN, which differs similar probs

edd1337 · 15/09/2011 23:24

something does need to be done about the trolls who label others things like: RA, MRA and woman-hater

epeems · 15/09/2011 23:17

Can she not just change her name?

scottishmummy · 15/09/2011 23:13

well given you started the thread pan,you would say its about so much more. sorry but its shaping up like mn oscars and fan call outs

what more why did the fem topics feels so got at or ask mn to revisit or reconsider them as a specific and safe space?

when someone flounces from aibu does a lot of folk say oh gosh whatshername has left does the mn critical mass demand review of aibu and trolls

SinicalSal · 15/09/2011 23:13

I disagree Stripeybump.
Anyone can join in, as long as they are sincere about contributing, not about shutting people up.

stripeybump · 15/09/2011 23:12

I'm not even a mum yet and I've ben posting for years, noone except the Fem area has made me feel unqualified or unwelcome.

stripeybump · 15/09/2011 23:11

It just feels... like the majority of MN regular posters aren't welcomed on the Fem topic. So tbh maybe it's better that those of you who want a load of new rules imposed, try a new website that isn't MN. An MN Fem topic should be for all MNers who'd like to chat about Fem issues, non? At the moment it's only welcoming to a very narrow set of posters, styles, intelligence levels, opinions and posting styles. MN is a free-for-all, or should be.

slhilly · 15/09/2011 23:06

Sybil, the code is available for free! It works really well.

Pan · 15/09/2011 23:05

yes K999 - so did I at times - but the request, as I have said, for a review isn't purely about dittany.

OP posts:
HereBeBolloX · 15/09/2011 23:03

This thread is not about that SM.

It's about what can be done about those posters who are not really interested in discussion but are simply determined to attention seek and disrupt.

It's a different type of trolling to usual and MN needs to update their trolling rules to deal with it.

Pan · 15/09/2011 23:03

sm - it's a bit more than that. with respect. It's more about how the boards, esp. the more personally and politically sensitive ones are considered.
