Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

You don't have to be feminist to post here, but it helps...

I've noticed that whenever a 'non-feminist' view is brought up, there are occasionally some posts along the lines of 'this is a feminist board, why come here if you aren't...', etc.

Genuine question - is this a feminist board, or a board about feminism? Obviously the majority of posters are feminist, but I'm not sure whether that is because feminists (surprise surprise) like discussing feminism, or because it is seen as a feminist 'safe haven'?

Pan, we've discussed that idea before. Just so you don't feel ignored Grin

Pan · 28/08/2011 21:41

So that's a 'no' then.Grin

Is it worthwhile considering some kind of statement at the head of each thread, similar to the AIBU one's. Except couched in a more positive manner. Approx 250 posts later and a resoultion to MrsR's OP isn't much nearer, othe than "to have manners!".
Something based on HerB's post at 20.54 perhaps. I am an 'in and out' poster often but this disagreement has been a consistent one when I do dip in. ( I lurk massively).
It may seem a patronising step, and poss. ineffective, but it would give an indication as to what is the focus of the threads, and how the thrust of the section is potentially at odds with mainstream opinion.

I agreed too BoF. I was about to say that I was a feminist and a socialist and that I don't see quite how you can be one without the other and then I thought that might take the conversation off into a whole new tangent where I didn't have the brainpower to back that assertion up (plus I'm tired and hungover Blush)

Pan · 28/08/2011 21:03

LeBof - just scrolled all the way back up and yes I agree.

I was interested LeBof, but tbh couldn't think of intelligent response. i suppose I should engage more rather than just nodding wordlessly at the screen in my darkened room...

About the premise of the thread, there's really nothing more to be said but we should all Have A Bit of Manners, as my mum'd say. But of course we all see the problem with that.

I read it with interest LeBof and agreed with it.

Look back to the OP, my view is that you don't need to be feminist to post here but you need to be aware that this is a feminist space and mainstream thinking will be challenged or argued with, usually perfectly politely.

Unfortunately this perfectly polite direct challenge then sometimes results in rudeness, aggression and whinging about how you're being bullied because no-one else agrees with you.

And quite often, people who disagree with a feminist perspective, don't even wait for someone to challenge their POV, they are rude on their very first post and then whine and act outraged by the "bullying" when people respond in kind.

If you don't want people to be mean to you, don't be mean to them, either as individuals or as a group. It really is that simple. I have to agree with Dittany on this, we are not as a group a particularly nasty bunch of meanies, we are being accused of being so because we refuse to back down on our arguments and we refuse to stop discussing things which people feel uncomfortable about being discussed. But people are very rarely bullied or personally insulted unless they attack first or have a track record of posting deliberately wind up stuff.

LeBOF · 28/08/2011 20:54

I wrote a big post about how I don't think it's inconsistent to be able to call yourself a socialist and a feminist which I thought would interest at least Custardo, but nobody has engaged with it at all

SybilBeddows · 28/08/2011 20:45

good point Pan.

Pan · 28/08/2011 20:44

Lenin - I think it was mine at 20.30 re dittany's questions. Exchanging with manic is a poor tactic for the tread. < he isn't even posting about the OP>

ChristinedePizan · 28/08/2011 20:44

Well really we should Pan. But he's like a mosquito bite :o

HereBeBolloX · 28/08/2011 20:43

Yes you're right Pan.

But dare I say it, I'm actually beginning to feel a bit sorry for him. I think he needs help. But he obviously won't get it here as he's going about it the wrong way. Anyway I'm going to do what you suggest and stop engaging with him, you're right, I've been complaining to MN about not taking the trolling seriously and here I am engaging with a self-confessed troll (even though he doesn't think he is one).

justforaminute · 28/08/2011 20:43

Isn't it beyond etiquette/ethics to continue exchanging with a poster who has been banned by MNHQ? It sort of undermines one of the few sanctions the site has. That's the way I see it at least.

well then ManicGeek, if you can't work out why you've been banned after that then we can't help you.

btw, wtf is all this 'I've been banned twice' whinging? If you're banned once, and then they ban you again even if you haven't said anything out of order the second time, it's not because of bizarre anti-male prejudice, it's because you're already banned and thus not allowed to come back.
