Feminist analysis of the royal wedding

This is one of the times when you realise how very lonely seeing things through a feminist lens can make you.

Patriarchy in all its glory.

I haven't watched it, did I miss anything interesting?

AmIAPayne · 29/04/2011 12:54

Then she should have asked, I did.

Conflugenglugen · 29/04/2011 12:53

I'm not sure that "man and wife" is often actively chosen. It has become so entrenched that it's almost part of the wedding scenery ... more's the pity.

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 12:52

their vows could say 'In privacy and in public, in full view of the paparazzi and on a private island'

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 12:51

do you think the designer label obsession is worse now than for Charles & Diana? It must be, mustn't it - there's a feeling now that all women are supposed to be into designer clothes rather than just the elite, don't you think?

sexism meets capitalism.

AmIAPayne · 29/04/2011 12:50

Yes alice "For richer, for poorer" Maybe it would be good if they made their own (more relevant vows) :)

TimeWasting · 29/04/2011 12:47

It was all about her. What she looked like. Very creepy.
She's gorgeous though, just what the royal bloodline needs.

I noticed that the build-up was all about the fashion, and we were being told the designers of the frocks etc. and when Mr. commentator informed us of one designer he said 'This dress by such-and-such, so I'm told' as though him knowing a fashion designer would be a bad thing, but the female journo is expected to reel off these names naturally.

That pic of Victoria Beckham made me feel ill, it looks like she's had her feet broken to fit into those shoes. Sad

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 12:46

I laughed at that too, but they could hardly leave it out....

DontdoitKatie · 29/04/2011 12:46

She didn't listen. :(

"man and wife" FFS

"For richer, for poorer" Oh, my sides!
And I was right! It was long and white!
Loved the father gives away, the husband takes over.

CatandDyl · 29/04/2011 12:27

The lack of ring for William makes me feel rather uncomfortable, like her father gives his property to William and then he puts a ring on her, effectively saying she is owned, but doesn't take a ring himself. I know its tradition, but its an awful sexist tradition.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 29/04/2011 12:23

In this house the dresses haven't been the focus. Lots of ignoring followed by:

'Horses!!!' 'The horse pooooed! Look! It pooed!' Hmm

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 12:16

People actually get a kick out of the regressiveness, don't they? Why is that?

I mean, I can understand the whole 'wanting to wear a beautiful white dress' thing but there are lots of decisions which are more neutral in how much fun they provide - like the ring, or 'man and wife' - which are nonetheless actively chosen.

there is an only way is essex marathon on itv2-far more true to life Grin
I felt bad and let dd watch it and then went and spoiled it by telling her the money spent on it was obscene and could be used better, and then a lecture on how i wasnt "given away because i belong to myself" and an explaination as to why not to have obey in a wedding ceremony. She is 8. I feel bad now.
Not really tho.

strangerintheday · 29/04/2011 12:03

Yeah, analysis in depth! Prince William looks "silly" and VB should not wear high heels being so pregnant (how dare she!)...

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 11:52

LOL, dd has decided to switch off and listen to Pippi Longstocking instead.

The bishop doing the reading now actually just said 'incubate'!!

Think it might have been some religious mumbo jumbo about the holy spirit but he did just talk about 'the next generation'.

Spooky.

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 11:40

Malificence there are several other threads about the royal wedding, this is a feminist analysis thread. It's in the feminism topic too. Why don't you go and post on another one rather than rudely barging in and telling us what to think? Hmm

Did they exchange rings or did he just give her one? I have 3 noisy children in the room so can't quite follow.

Malificence · 29/04/2011 11:38

God, don't be so bloody miserable - it's a wedding - you know, meant to be a happy day, who cares if it's traditional? You can tell by the way they are looking at each other that they are happy.
Prince William doesn't look "silly" at all, if you had married a man in uniform you wouldn't say that.

Kate looks lovely, I'm sure her mum and dad are very proud.
