Higher profile on MN for Feminism ?

I've recently found this corner of Mumsnet, probably following one of threads appearing on Discussions of the Day. - Probably around the time of International Women's Day. Thought about joining some of you for the London march - maybe next year !

But it seems to be a little bit hidden away to me, considering it's massive importance to women's well-being !

I know lots of you are pretty hot on campaigning ...

  • So how about a minor campaign to get MNHQ to mention Feminism more prominently.

eg. On the "popular threads" list
All the "product review" topics are listed at the bottom of the page FFS !
Surely women's rights are as important as the best choice of washing machine Wink

I hope there's a certain subtlety and humour in my posts sometimes which not everyone always appreciates. Anyone else feel the same ? Grin

And then people start taking you completely literally, and being terribly argumentative.

But I do stand by my opinion that it's not surprising if women on a discussion forum might like to explore how to make life better for themselves and other women !

Obviously this is a highly contentious suggestion Hmm

As is the idea that such a section of the forum might have a visible title/ link etc. Hmm

activate if it's the level of debate you are worried about, surely that's an argument for giving this section a higher profile? That way there would be more chance of attracting new people with original & diverse opinions.

Sorry yes I meant that the webchat should be at the top of Active Convos (not that feminism topic should be - obviously threads are, when they are active)

Anyway thanks for posting the Cordelia Fine interviews.

MrIC · 19/03/2011 14:47

I agree - it took me a while to find this forum, it is a bit hidden away.

why is it under "other stuff" anyway?

activate · 19/03/2011 14:25

"what else would women be talking about on a discussion forum ? "

really?

really, truly?

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 14:22

dittany - "grateful that Mumsnet even gave us this topic" ?

Really ? Obviously it's great that it's here, but what else would women be talking about on a discussion forum ?

Apart from obviously how to recreate school dinner Lancashire hotpot ! (A question of mine on the school dinner thread Blush)

Yep - that's why any sane MNer hides AIBU, to make room on active convos for stuff they might actually want to discuss...

Blackduck · 19/03/2011 13:49

Isn't the popular lsit generated by hits? I know discussions of the day are 'picked' by MNHQ, but always thought the other list was by hit count? and on that basis this just can't compete with a juicy AIBU

LOL at like IABU

So basically now you're saying it should stay as it should with posters having to choose to hide it if they wish

sounds fine and dandy

Lacuna · 19/03/2011 13:39

I don't see why it couldn't go on the 'popular threads' list, as the OP suggests.

But apart from that - I don't think it's hidden away in any case. I've recently returned to MN after a long absence and picked up on its existence very easily.

Blackduck · 19/03/2011 13:36

Actually, perversely, I prefer it 'hidden'.

AIBU makes me shudder....

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 13:35

Yes, let Feminism be the default option.

If any woman wants to opt out of discussions on how to make life better for women then of course she can !

Actually it's not even that, is it ?

It's just enabling women here to opt in if they'd like to. Smile

( And men too I suppose >)

Lacuna · 19/03/2011 13:30

Sounds like the AIBU board to me Grin. And you know what I do? I hide it. That's the magic of the internet.

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 13:26

David reveals his true colours !

He wants to promote a high profile Anti-Feminism forum !

We should have known ... He is a man !

I'm joking of course Grin

jugglingjo - by no means do I think the individuals who enjoy posting on here are thick

I suppose I should have put the punctuation in my line as follows: I would object to any "highly opinionated, toe-the-line or get out, we represent you and if you don't believe it you're wrong and thick" group getting higher emphasis and 'mentioned more prominently'

hope that helps

Yes of course I'm anti-feminist now aren't I? I couldn't just have an independent opinion about the mode of discussions on the MN feminism board could I? Grin

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 13:22

Feminism is for every woman !

  • And I certainly haven't noticed this group to be especially "thick"

Au contraire ! ( Though I'm on dangerous ground here, attempting French spelling ! LOL )
