Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I've got quite a simple question that I just can't answer - why would a woman not be a feminist?

Surely everyone wants equality of opportunity, don't they?

Would appreciate the opinions of those feminists far wiser than I.

Hi OMG. I did have a quick peek at the Erin Pizzey article you provided a link to on Wikki. I am aware (although I would like to find out more - Dittany and others might know more) that there was a debate in the movement over this issue. The reason I need to find out more is that the Wikki article looked a bit unbalanced. Lotos of the referneces and links seem to be about 'what Pizzey said'.

But that is rather beside the point. There are debates in every healthy functioning poltitical movmement - even the Conservative Party. Lack of debate, I think, tends to be unhealthy. But, for some reasons, when there is debate in feminism, it seems to be treated in a much more negative way.....,,>

I have listened to what you have said and replied but I simply do not agree with you and that is why I stuck to my opinion which I believe to be correct. I would suggest that is you that has not listened to me or even contemplated what I said none of you commented on what happened to Erin Pizzey at all. Your intention right from the start was to have an argument with me. You asked what bad things I pointed some out and you continued to argue with me.

I think it is more because I am a man because I have yet to see you calling any woman a twat for what they believe even when it is stronger than what I have said but only you will know whether or not you were doing the very thing you are trying to fight against.

Omg20 · 19/03/2011 20:49

I don't care if you don't listen to me because at the end of the day this is why people aren't joining feminism and they will judge you and feminism on what you say and how you treat your fellow human beings. Why even ask the question if you aren't going to listen to the very people you are enquiring about? The way I was treated was disgraceful and people will see that and think to themselves do I really want to be part of insulting and mocking people?

I heard it was Venus. And that's why they gave that name to the razors. Tis a conspiracy.

Is one of the threads where you will find mothers that have been made to feel like they aren't feminist or are against feminism because they are sahp. I am not lying I have seen mothers come on here and say this. I stopped posting thread links though because I was told to because it was not fair on the people posting in the threads.

With regards to debating I do not debate on a thread made for/by victims where they are on the forums and where it could be insensitive to the victim.

HHLimbo · 19/03/2011 18:38

Going back to the OP, I never seriously considered feminism until my mid 20s.

Before that, I had always felt completely equal (and in many ways better Wink) than men. I had always been well treated with plenty of opportunities in the same way as anyone else.

What changed that for me was when I came across an extremely sexist boss. At first, I had a great deal of trouble understanding why he behaved like this towards me, and I slowly realised that other women who had worked with him had found the same problems. He recruited other people with very sexist attitudes and make life extremely difficult and distressing. Then I knew the importance of feminism!

Jasmine, it's a bit rich to say 'you won't be interested in my opinion anyway' in your very first post, and then, in your second post, complain about the quality of the debate!

I would be very interested to hear more, but you've not actually said anything yet!

alexpolismum · 19/03/2011 16:33

Hear, hear, SGM

AyeRobot · 19/03/2011 16:33

jasminetom, could you make a choice to have equal rights to a man in your country?

alexpolismum · 19/03/2011 16:31

jasminetom - do the lighthearted posts really negate all the serious ones, with well thought out, articulate points being made? Perhaps you should start your own thread if you wish to have an intelligent debate on a specific topic.

jasminetom - why would you assume people here are not interested in your opinion? They might disagree, but that doesn't mean they are not interested.

I, for one, am interested in why you think that the fundamental differences between men and women should mean we don't have equal rights?

Nobody is denying that there are fundamental differences between men and women. Obviously men do not have wombs, do not get pregnant and do not breastfeed. Women do not have penises. I'm sure I do not need to make the list any longer. But why should these differences lead to 'less than equal rights' (your words)?

jasminetom · 19/03/2011 16:24

Such intelligent debate.
