International Women's Day: how can we make the world more equal?

Hello campers,

As lots of you will already know, Tuesday March 8 is International Women's Day. MNHQ has been working with the EQUALS coalition this year, and they've asked us to ask you to suggest small ways in which you think we could all work to make men and women more equal, whether locally, nationally or globally.

Examples would be: go and support your local woman's football team; write to a television station to ask why women presenters are 20 years younger than their male counterparts; or make a donation to an organisation that supports women in developing countries. (If you're feeling extrovert, you could also consider organising an EQUALS soul train in your area this coming Friday.)

Your contributions might end up on the EQUALS blog.

Thanks,

MNHQ x

To go back to the original point of this thread....

Women whill be equal when the statement "I am not a feminist, but.." is not deemed necessary to be put in front of any statement that contains a feminist sentiment.

If the point is to try to get more women to report rape so the scale of the problem could stir police into action, I think it is worth bearing in mind that many women reported attacks in the Warboys (sp?) case and it took the police a painfully long time to connect the dots, and then in the aftermath they appealed to the public for any more women who had been attacked to come forward, leaving a few people scratching their heads and wondering what exactly was going on...

Worth noting too the fate of rape kits in many states in the US -- 'Unprocessed Rape Kits' article here.

I don't know but perhaps some people could be wary of looking at threads specifically about rape.

Maybe it's important to begin to address some of those issues here too ( where more people could begin thinking about them )?

s/he reminds me of those concern trolls we get sometimes.

I love it when people who spend a lot of their time and energy campaigning against something get told how to do it by people who almost certainly don't.
But they have the pragmatism to know you shouldn't actually do anything or even mention it, see, which is much more useful than actual research and campaigning.

MWR had large contingents of women from different Rape Crisis centres. I wonder if they know they ought to be more pragmatic.

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:55

What is your point about hate?

StreetWiseHotMum · 10/03/2011 19:53

oh, so misogyny means love does it.

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:51

dittany hasn't mentioned hate.

Projection

StreetWiseHotMum · 10/03/2011 19:51

Hate never solved anything dittany.

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:51

Why don't you go and look at the rape threads

Or are you just here to have a ruck

As if we didn't know the answer to that Hmm

oh dear, now the rants begin.

Lets look at what you said:

we know why most rape cases don't get to court. Because most women don't report, because they know they will not get justice because of a widespread attitude of mysogyny which has been discussed over and over again on the feminist boards if you'd care to take a look.

Going by your own words would the sensible thing be to start with addressing Because most women don't report?

jugglingjo · 10/03/2011 19:40

I think that's such a good point LeninGrad !

I often feel that when reading responses here on MN.

People are very quick to disagree, and seem slow to recognise their fundamental shared experiences.

What can we do about it ? ... Flag it up ? Wink

mathanxiety · 10/03/2011 19:39

Streetwise -- that comment of mine was made to Jjkm.. so no apology necessary (unless Jjkm wants one Smile)

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:38

We have already discussed what we can do about it on numerous threads.

Education, incorporating it into the syllabus, bannign widespread porn, respecting women, getting juries to undertake training days where they learn the facts of rape as opposed to myths, are some of the things which have been suggested.

Try doing a search on rape or sexual assaults on the feminism topic and you'll find loads of ideas

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 10/03/2011 19:37

mathanxiety was quite obviously addressing jjkm, since she was directly referring to her post.

it's not all about you, you know Streetwisehotmum.
I assume you are going to apologise to her.

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:36

Oh shut up streetwiseman you are dull and are here to argue against equality, not discuss how or when it can be acheived.

we know why most rape cases don't get to court. Because most women don't report, because they know they will not get justice because of a widespread attitude of mysogyny which has been discussed over and over again on the feminist boards if you'd care to take a look.

Nobody is going to waste their time trawling through your stupid posts trying to prove a point to you.

StreetWiseHotMum · 10/03/2011 19:35

what can we do about it is exactly what I am asking.

Hand wringing and spouting statistics that mean nothing then going on about all the evils in the world won't change a thing.

StreetWiseHotMum · 10/03/2011 19:31

Wanting doesn't make things happen.

as for who believes women should be hired or fired based on merit and not to enhance diversity does not consider herself to be a feminist?...you are clearly deluded.

Show me where I have said that or apologise.

Wondering why someone who believes that the treatment of rape victims in the justice system and the attitude to rape in the justice system needs fixing, and who believes women should be hired or fired based on merit and not to enhance diversity does not consider herself to be a feminist?

When women stop shaking their heads in despair and thinking wanting fairness and opportunity for all is like wishing for geese and golden eggs. Hmm
