Apparently.

I am a little saddened that a forum mostly used by women, has decided that the feminist boards are the most frightening of the forum.

Why do we feel that is? What can be done to prevent people from feeling so intimidated that they are too scared t post?

i dont call myself a feminist as i feel
that women and men do have equal opportunity obviously theres stories of sexism out there like there is with anything, but im not one to play the female card! the idea of feminism dosent interest me at all, a women within reason can be whoever she wants to be in this day and age in my opinion and i dont agree with demeaning at every chance, i feel that there are things that a man can do better than me? so what! and i get a man to do my diy. to be honest i just feel like im rambling but the top and bottom of it is i dont feel im a feminist.

Tortington · 27/02/2011 13:24

cba at the moment sakura, maybe later - but you and i have had this discussion before

maybe we could argue this out under politics or even chat,

as i have already stated you have to have a thick hide to be in the feminist topic and defend your belief system if you are a non feminist. I was being polite and answering hully's question i didn't want to enter into a debate about my belief system

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/02/2011 13:24

It's a valid way of looking at things though. If we lived in a society where ownership was changed then that would by default change the way people live and work which would have an impact on lots of feminist concerns. It's not my bag baby but it's a lot easier to understand than 'non-feminist'.

sakura · 27/02/2011 13:20

x posts aviatrix. That WTF was at my own post!

sakura · 27/02/2011 13:19

WTF was that post sorry, let me try again,

Custardo, your argument that female oppression is merely based on the division of labour falls short, because economic oppression is only one of the tenets of our oppression. YOu also seem to be implying that it is a coincidence that women are poorer than men. It is not. It is deliberate and history shows us that it is. Just look at the policies of the current government where it is women (who are poorer) that have been targeted for the cuts not men (who are already richer). It is deliberate. Belive it.

I wasn't trying to be arsey. Just being nosey.

sakura · 27/02/2011 13:16

custardo, your argument merely based on the economics of female oppression, whereas the tentacles of the oppression of women reaches much further than simple economics or class.

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/02/2011 13:11

Ah. Are you a marxist? I have a vague recollection of marxist theory on a issues like racism being this is a distraction from the real inequality between the workers and the rich.

MogadoredMemoo · 27/02/2011 13:11

There is no way that Grace could ever have come to that conclusion from any of Dittanys posts. It is a vicious lie concocted purely to cause offence.

vesuvia · 27/02/2011 13:11

SalandersBro wrote - "it is possible to see someone elses's perspective and aslo hold your own. but that seems tricky round here. so i'll leave you to it."

I've changed my mind on some issues over the past several months after debates in this feminist section because I found views that opposed mine were wiser and more sensible positions to adopt.

I am anti-porn. However, I definitely see the pro-porn people's perspective and respect at least some supporters of porn who I happen to know from other threads have feminist values close to their heart on other issues, but they haven't persuaded me that their view on porn is one I should agree with. We cross swords from time to time, regroup, polish our arguments and have another go.

How willing are you to see the view of people who disagree with you?

i dont believe the root of societies ills is the inequality of the sexes, whilst i do accept this exists, as i accept that there are many inequalities that exist, my belief system is rooted int eh division of labour

HerBeX · 27/02/2011 13:06

You mean this thread AgingGrace? What's wrong with it?

You could always drag it back to the subject of politeness, acquiescene, etc. I don't know why you found it all too much....

And it is simply bizarre to characterise Dittany's POV about porny dress = an invitation to rape in the way you have. She has also never said that all men are rapists, that's just a stereotype of what feminists think.

Are you confusing her with someone else or is something else going on here?

Hullygully · 27/02/2011 13:01

Custy - genuinely curious, why don't you call yourself a feminist?

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/02/2011 12:53

How could anyone accuse Dittany of supporting that misogynistic bollocks??????

You're either deluded or malicious Ageing Grace.

DumSpiroSpero · 27/02/2011 12:53

Apparently the little bunch of us on Sleb Twaddle who fancy the butt off of Richard Armitage are quite terrifying too Grin!

itsalarf · 27/02/2011 12:52

I am genuinely curious here, Custardo and Glamour. If you say are a non-feminist, then what does that mean? That men and women do not deserve equal treatment, or that we have equal opportunity already, or that it does not matter, or that it is impossible to address? Or something else?

hymie · 27/02/2011 12:45

I'm against default favouring. Period.

funny how the people who are s against all woman shortlists never seem to find a problem with the all male shortlists we have had in politics etc for the last 2513457825 years Hmm Wink

hymie · 27/02/2011 12:40

"aviatrix Sun 27-Feb-11 08:33:03
Hymie, what do you think about all-women shortlists?"

Its a tricky one as I am against anything that discriminates against ability, but at the same time balance is important. If 2 candidates were equal then it makes sense to employ the one that might help redress any inbalance, but otherwise no, ability all the way should be the deciding factor. Anything else is just condescending.

Goblinchild · 27/02/2011 12:40

I'm bewildered as to where AG could have got the idea from, I've never seen Dittany be anything but uncompromisingly and eloquently opposed to that sort of argument.
It's the kind of thing she rips to little shreds, in a very convincing and thorough way.
