Don't normally post in this section, very much a lurker though, but thought this might be my début.

Just found it all too accurate.

Isn't the point also that when she said 'thanks, but erm no thanks' instead of just going 'ok, next time I'll just stick to comments on your work' it triggered a whole landslide of comments from tons of guys.

Because if you said 'guy-who-drew-a-cool-comic, marry me and have my babies?' and he said 'no thanks, stranger, please don't talk about babies when you're telling me my comic rocks' would you say 'ok, sorry about that - I loved the way you drew the facial expressions!

or 'dude, why don't you want to have my babies. You should be grateful that I want to have sex with you and that I took time out my day to tell you so. And you are wrong.'

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/11/2010 15:00

Nah I think it's the same for most people. A lot of the things on the feminism section I either disagree but sometimes change my mind, or just can't muster the energy to bother about.

And then you get a thread like this where your posts made me clarify to myself what exactly it was that bothers me about that phrase. :)

Pogleswooooo · 01/11/2010 14:35

Yeah, thanks all - my brain is sorted now,(and a straw poll of my friends and aquaintances has shown that I'm the only person I know interpreting this how I was,so I am obv.wrong and it is expunged from my vocabulary as of now...)
I don't know if it is just me but some of the issues that are talked about here seem blindingly obvious, but others I think about and think I've "got it" and then it is almost as if my brain resets to its default settings the moment I stop concentrating...

Thanks for the link, blackcurrants - now that half term is over hopefully I'll get some time to read the rest of Feminism 101 as well!

I know what you mean Pogle - but the "humour" of what her original commenter said stems from the fact that he's offering to be her "woman". And that's really funny, because she's the woman. Offering to have someone's babies (NOT in the case of you and your DH obviously that's a bit different :)) is quite a strange idea of a reward, unless you accept that the ultimate reward is sex. And presumably she drew her cartoon for some other reason than because she wanted someone to volunteer to have sex with her. (Willing to be corrected if the original says "please marry me and have my babies!" or something)

Sooo...to me it's a bit like catcalling someone, the commenter let her know that no matter what she is doing/drawing/making/thinking, he is seeing her in terms of sex. And it's like there's no escape for women from being thought about in sexual terms by total strangers, just for putting their work out there.

Does this make any sense at all?

Pogles This post does some of the explaining work, I think, which might make it clearer.

Pogleswooooo · 31/10/2010 15:18

I don't hear it as reminding women of their place - it's a scenario in which the man is going to have the babies, after all,not RL.

But,yes,I'm being nitpicky about a particular phrase, and what it says to me,and ignoring the wider picture of sexual harassment of women and the internet, and how you'd feel if it was happening to you regularly,I'll stop now - sorry.

Yes,I do get that,I just don't see that the comment isn't saying that. It's a jokey saying,in fact maybe even a quote from some bygone comedy show, and could in my world be used by anyone to anyone.Maybe a bit over familiar for the internet, and someone you don't actually know...
But looking at what I can find on twitter,it looks as if she was using it as a general representation of what was said, rather than it having been those exact words which were used -and it's the exact words that I can't see the problem with,so I take it all back...

"a man who'd said he liked her cartoon so much that he wanted to marry her and have her babies."

Why is that sexist? Because I say on a regular basis to DH "marry me, and have my babies!" (mostly he declines...) I think as a comment that is not at all the same as "Your comic is so good it makes me want to fuck you"

I read dittany's post from Bidisha's blog and was filled with depression and anger about the position women are in, still. And then I read this, andthink "yes, great cartoon!"
And then I read the actual comment that set it all off and think Confused - and your problem with that is what?

If someone said to me at work that I'd done a really good job and it made him want to fuck me (unlikely in my job) I'd be angry and offended. If a bloke said "hey, good work - I want to marry you and have your babies" I'd hear that as a jokey comment, which is a play on the "popular" idea that all women want to do is find a man and have his babies....

So do I need to have the "Well,I thought I was a feminist..." T shirt made straight away? Sad

blackcurrants · 30/10/2010 22:21

I saw this comic yesterday and loved it - and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kate Beaton (always have, always will, want to hang out with her and drink cocktails) so I'm pleased he was posting about this.

Also, welcome DBennett - great way to unlurk! [hgrin]

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 30/10/2010 21:13

I love the "logic force field" frame and the way he's illustrated the women's arguments with loads of irrefutable facts :o

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 30/10/2010 21:13

Yeah he's a man - that's why it's called "being a traitor to one's gender" or whatever. He seems to actually get it though.

DBennett · 30/10/2010 19:51

Yeah, that's right Gabby/Ken was commenting on the events over at harkavagrant.

Her website is pretty good as well by the way.

I agree Dittany. But I think one often starts out with the engaging and then changes after seeing what happens if you do.
