Can I just say very quickly, this isn?t a call out for an argument, I am genuinely asking a question of some of the posters here in the feminist section, and I promise my tone is not aggressive or sarcastic.

Ok, so what I am asking is, given this is a subsection of mumsnet for feminist issues/discussion etc, and given you don?t ascribe to being feminists or identifying with them, why do you post in here? I really am asking whats in it for you? I really don?t understand why any woman would feel the need to come onto the feminist section to be anything other than supportive to the feminist principles. After all, feminism as a movement can only BENEFIT women. Why wouldn?t that be something you are for?

Thanks in advance if y?all take the time to respond.

god, sorry, porn even

OP posts:
frikonastick · 19/07/2010 15:13

nope, i mean the posts where rape statistics are called into question, and posters who insist that what you wear can prevent rape, despite being told a million times that isnt factually true.

sorry, this is actually more tricky than i thought it was going to be, as i really dont want to copy and paste from other threads into this one to 'prove' my point iyswim.

WRT pron, sorry, thats not a discussion i have been a part of before. but i dont imagine anyone is saying the porn industry is good for women are they?

When you say the comments aren't supportive, do you mean they are saying women should be subordinate to men? Or have less rights?

Or is it on topics which are not universally agreed on, like porn?

frikonastick · 19/07/2010 15:02

of course anyone can comment earwicga, the question is what is the motivation behind comments that are clearly not supportive of feminism (as a whole, rather than sematicy bits of it), in the feminist section.

whats in it for the posters?

OP posts:
Sakura · 19/07/2010 14:46

unless someone takes it upon themself to deem the topic 'out of bounds for discussion'
Then you get problems...

Tempestes · 19/07/2010 14:45

I think that some things mentioned in this section aren't seen as beneficial by everyone, hence the posting by people that disagree.

earwicga · 19/07/2010 14:44

Well, it seems the consensus is that anybody can comment on a 'feminist thread'. That it is good that this section of Mumsnet isn't an echo chamber. Good.

frikonastick · 19/07/2010 14:42

yes, tempestes, i see why you would want to enter into a debate about something, but not why you would be unsupportive/dismissive/derisory of something that only means BENEFIT to women (and by extention, everyone else). especially if you are in fact a woman yourself.

You'll have to excuse me, I'm at the tail end of a 2 day migraine, so a bit fuzzy, but bored to death of lying in a dark room.

Tempestes · 19/07/2010 14:39

I'm aware of that frikonastick, was responding to other posters who had.

I can see why anyone would want to post in this section, male/female feminist or not, as it affects everyone (as it should)

Sakura · 19/07/2010 14:39

Ah, now you're getting the hang of it tempestes

Sakura · 19/07/2010 14:38

I used 'anti-feminist'. To be fair, I thought TSH did say she was an anti-feminist, but I may be wrong there.

earwicga · 19/07/2010 14:38

Lol Butterbur.

'You might as well say, why do people post on a breast feeding thread in support of bottle feeding.'

I'm certainly not brave enough to do that!

Tempestes · 19/07/2010 14:37

Sakura - Are you replying to me? I'm a little confused, I already don't agree with it

frikonastick · 19/07/2010 14:37

tempestes

i havent used anti feminist and non feminist as interchangeable terms.

in fact i have been very careful to say only NON feminist. not anti.

and i did say further up thread that "there may very well be parts of feminism that you do not agree with, that would not preclude you from calling yourself a feminist"

(although i note earwicga, that you did not congratulate me on my astute observation )

and thank you blackduck, i absolutely havent said that i dont want people here with dissenting views!

OP posts:
Butterbur · 19/07/2010 14:36

Oh and if an anti-feminist section is put up, do you think feminists should be allowed to post on it?

Sakura · 19/07/2010 14:36

yy

Butterbur · 19/07/2010 14:34

Perhaps what they get out of it is the cut and thrust of disagreement.

Or,if people pick up a thread from the Active page, they may not even notice it is in the Feminism section when they exercise their personal freedom and reply.

This is not unique to this section. You might as well say, why do people post on a breast feeding thread in support of bottle feeding.

Sakura · 19/07/2010 14:34

Again, another opinion. YOu don't have to agree with it

Tempestes · 19/07/2010 14:32

Frikonastick may not want them to post elsewhere, but that doesn't mean it hasn't come up

"I think I asked ShriekingHarpy to get Mumsnet to set up an antifeminist section. If I didn't say it, I definitely thought it. It would seem more appropriate than posting in here."

Sakura · 19/07/2010 14:29

IF you think this is heated you should break yourself in with AIBU

Sakura · 19/07/2010 14:28

Yes, we like a variety of opinions on MN

Blackduck · 19/07/2010 14:25

I don't think Frikonastick is saying they aren't wanted, or indeed that she can't defend her views, I think what she is asking is what these people get out of it..... go back and read the OP it is quite clear what she is asking.

earwicga · 19/07/2010 14:24

Tempestes - great points!

Feminism is a broad church and disagreement within it can only strenghtens the movement. Aspects which can't be argued properly are sidelined. The MSM is a particular enemy to feminism, as it highlights extreme views and neglects to highlight anything that is well argued which all right thinking individuals cannot disagree with.

Tempestes · 19/07/2010 14:19

Why are non-feminist and anti-feminist being used interchangably?

You can describe yourself as not being part of a group without being anti it surely? I'm not vegetarian, but I'm not anti it.

I used to describe myself as feminist, but since reading the MN feminism section I've almost felt like distancing myself. It's as if there is Feminism and feminism. One as a set of guidelines to live by (and god forbid you step out of line) and the other as just wanting fair and equal treatment for both sexes. I feel like the former is the one advocated on here, and is why I have lurked rather than posted. And reading about people who have differing views not being wanted on this board hasn't exactly changed my thoughts.
