Has anyone else read this?

It is over and above my favourite book of the year. Highly reccomended.

It reduced me to tears in parts which happens rarely with books for me.

I have two others by him but found them very hard to get into.

I kept thinking about it during that Meredith Kercher trial in Italy.

Secret History I mean.

SCargot · 10/12/2009 14:08

i loved secret hist too

SCargot · 10/12/2009 14:07

OK WHICH PONCE bought the last one in our town this morning?

GerMom7 · 10/12/2009 13:59

Love most things mentioned - particularly The Corrections. Saw Jonathan Franzen do a reading of it in Edinburgh and he was very funny.

Has anyone tried Richard Russo? He's one of my favourites (Empire Falls, Straight Man, Bridge of Sighs, Nobody's Fool), won the Pulitzer for Empire Falls.

Also Don DeLillo's White Noise.

Mistletoesnowman · 10/12/2009 13:22

Someone mentioned Iris Murdoch. Love her, especially The Sea The Sea.

Has anyone read either Fugitive Pieces or Silk? Both wonderfully written and well worth a punt.

orangina · 10/12/2009 11:12

Have just added it to large amazon christmas order....

SexySantasWearPrimark · 10/12/2009 10:58

The possibility of an Island is in my top 10.

orangina · 10/12/2009 10:52

No, have read none of those (will add to Christmas list immediately.....)

The Secret History would be one of my desert island books. Together w Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. And Adhaf Soueif. And Microserfs.

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:35

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:18

David Mitchell

What do you think of Zadie Smith? I wasn't so sure.

My friends constantly moan at me that all my favourite authors are male. So hit me wth some good female authors?

OP posts:
orangina · 10/12/2009 10:17

Jay McInerney too....

orangina · 10/12/2009 10:16

Aha! Yes, v much the same taste in books....

Yes, The Sportswriter, couldn't remember what it was called. Loved it too.

Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter?
Dona Flor and her two husbands?

ahundredtimes · 10/12/2009 10:15

You hated Carter Beats the Devil?

Hmm.

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:14

We have the exact same taste in books - odd!

I'm TDWP btw under a new (soon to be shod) guise.

Should read The Sportswriter before Independence Day though (don't think she'll like it though)

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:13

I like Bukowski too - especially when 'm in a man hating frame of mind.

I also enjoyed the follow up to a Million Little Pieces (can't remember now what it's called...)

orangina · 10/12/2009 10:12

Independence Day, by Richard Ford. Kind of John Updike-y
