DS1 was ogling the new Alex Rider Gadgets book in Ottakars on Saturday. But these days he saves up his pocket money for Gameboy games, not books any longer

He still has lots of books on his Christmas list though

Cod - there is an Alex Rider film coming out soon (? Christmas), which might be a good introduction. Then he will be motivated to read them himself next year.

roisin · 03/10/2005 19:15

The Diamond Brothers If you follow the links on this page there are several books in the series.

roisin · 03/10/2005 19:13

Cod - I would say your ds still a bit young for Alex Rider. I certainly wouldn't read them to ds2 (6.5) yet.

Maybe try him on the "younger" Horowitz books. They are very funny ... but I'm struggling to remember the names. Hang on, and I'll be back in a sec.

That's interesting Cam. I'll have to read it again to see if I can spot any turn-offs.

Ds1 does find any kind of hint of teenage romance stuff a big turn-off. But I don't remember there being any in Point Blanc. There was in some of the others, but he read them.

Oh and she devoured Adolphus Tips, have we got separated-at-birth twins?

Cam · 03/10/2005 18:51

roisin, my dd (8) read Stormbreaker and loved it and also gave up Point Blanc in the middle. Why?

It's good to see some books for boys been written. And good books at that!

VP - Have you tried Jeremy Strong's books Personally I loathe them, but they're very much on a level with Horrid Henry and Captain Underpants.

A great book for a gripping easy read is Eoin Colfer's The Legend of Spud Murphy

Barrington Stoke specialise in books for reluctant readers, which your ds obviously isn't, but take a look at their books anyway - they're very good IMO, my ds (11) likes them, as well as Alex Rider etc.

I should go to bed, I'm messing up all my posts

victoriapeckham · 16/05/2005 22:37

Bless these wonderful authors who can persuade boys to read! My son aged 9 loved Silverfin (wow, the movie or TV series is bound to be a massisve hit) and has now just started Storm Breaker. He read 90 pages in one night. It's so exciting to see him absorbed in a book.

Any recommendations for books for boys aged 7? My younger son (a pretty good reader) has read all Horrid Henry and Captain Underpants, got bored with Flat Stanley and dabbled unenthusiastically with Secret Seven. Problem is books with level of adventure and excitement he requires are too tricky for him to read. It was same with ds1: between 7 and 9 i couldn't find much to float his boat.

Sorry - ignore the first link I posted, doesn't work. Second one does though!

tiddlypom · 16/05/2005 22:30

There's an Alex Rider website now.
