Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series...

It's still as magical and relevant today, 50 years later..

What's yours?

There’s one from the 50s that’s out of print called The Three Elizabeths, I’d love to read that again.

Is this the one ?

No luck on World of Books site, but it’s currently up for sale on E bay.

The Country Child
Cobbler’s Dream
Mandy
101 Dalmatians
The Silver Brumby
Winnie the Pooh/House at Pooh Corner/When We Were Very Young/Now We Are Six

Was Mandy the one about the girl who created a garden? I can remember the cover of that library book so well.
101 Dalmatians is such a wonderful book- a real adventure story.
I still reread the Moomin books and the Little House series.

I’ve also kept Hairy McClary series who were given to DS as a child.

Chalet school
Drina Ballerina

3beesinmybonnet · 12/10/2026 18:20

Several of those already mentioned, but my favourites are the Jill series by Ruby Ferguson.

RomanMum · 12/10/2026 18:13

I love rereading children’s books, proper comfort reads. Some favourites:

Charlotte Sometimes
Over Sea, Under Stone (some day I’ll get round to reading the whole series)
Alice in Wonderland
Cue for Treason

And some lesser known ones:
The Clue in the Castle (one of my favourites)
Chowry
Pam’s Patrol
Children of the Stones

Basically mainly classics, fantasy/folk horror or mid-20th century schoolgirl stories 😊

This is mine too. And I read the (actual) Dark is Rising book most years in December.

I also still love 'The Little White Horse' by Elizabeth Goudge, anything by Diana Wynne Jones and anything by Joan Aiken.

Oh yes, I reread the Chrestomanci books not long ago and they’re still enchanting. I used to love Joan Aiken as a child, but haven’t revisited - maybe I should.

EBearhug · 12/10/2026 18:01

I was going to say the Dark is Rising before I opened the thread.

I'm currently working through the Lone Pine books, which I'm enjoying. Diana Wynne Jones is always fun. John Marsden's Tomorrow books.

rumerx · 12/10/2026 18:01

Anne of Green Gables

Hatty65 · 12/10/2026 17:52

Ballet Shoes is still wonderful.

I thought I’d feel the same about Thursdays Chiid but it just annoyed me. Margaret’s benefactor was never revealed nor the reason why they suddenly stopped supporting her from afar and how convenient the Beresfords were actually rich poshoes….

GrillaMilla · 12/10/2026 17:44

The Hundred and One Dalmatians
The Secret Garden
Charlotte's Web
