Currently: The Coworker (loving it)
Next: Count of Monte Cristo (has anybody read it? Is it an easy read?)

I usually lurk but have literally just started The Count of Monte Cristo this weekend so popped out to wave! So far so good, I'm not very far in so it's mainly story setting so far but it's very easy to follow and seems.loke it will be engaging once it gets going. The main difficulty I am having is holding the book comfortably, it's bloody huge 😆

SpunkyKhakiScroller · 22/03/2026 22:36

Finished The Satapur Moonstone, Geneva, and Queens at War this weekend. The first was good, the second was terrible, and the third was fine but not to my taste.

Have begun a reread of Marking Time by Elizabeth Jane Howard. I am slowly rereading her Cazalet Chronicles 20 years after I first read them and am amazed at how I am picking up on different things now I am old and jaded!

Next up is James by Percival Everett for my book club.

ExOptimist · 22/03/2026 02:23

I just finished The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller, I thought it was very good, excellently written, definitely deserved its Booker shortlisting.

Just started Three Days in June by Anne Tyler, who is one of my most favourite writers. I've read about 20 pages and am loving it, she is so great at sharply and wittily capturing the inner thoughts of seemingly the most ordinary of characters.

After that I'm going to read House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.

I just finished Our Last Wild Days by Anna Bailey and loved it. A mystery set in a small town in Louisiana with great characters and loads of atmosphere. So good!

Current - The Elements by John Boyne. I overall like it, but pretty dark and uncomfortable in parts.

Next - Road Ends by Mary Lawson. I love her other 3 books, so I'm sure this is going to be good.

Rocketpants50 · 21/03/2026 22:27

The Alice Network by Katie Quinn, based on the WW1 spy network of women.

The read Beneath a Scarlett Sky based on the true story of Pino Lello - an italian teenager in world war 2.

Found both stories fascinating if anyone has any other historical based books.

Goonie1 · 21/03/2026 22:26

Im reading “Coded Gods Genes of the Apocalypse”
my friend wrote it so I’m reading to give some feedback. I loved reading but single parenthood left me with little time so this has gotten me back into reading so I’m thankful for that!

firstofallimadelight · 21/03/2026 22:22

just finished don’t let him in by Lisa Jewell which was fab now just about to start reading missing pieces Tim weaver.

Spaghettion · 21/03/2026 22:21

I’m currently reading Virginia Guiffrees autobiography, as expected it’s really shocking and sad. Next on my list is The list of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey.

didgeridid · 21/03/2026 22:18

I'm reading Brighton Mermaid by Dorothy Koomson and I can not put it down! It's brilliantly written

outerspacepotato · 21/03/2026 22:16

Still listening to Middlemarch. Wonderful book.

I just finished Sister Svangerd and the Not Quite Dead by K. J. Parker aka Tom Holt. A little linguistics, a brief touch of theology, undead monsters, and it's fun. I'm looking forward to the next one.

@alino , I bought the audiobook of The Terror. I like winter ☃️ horror.

alino · 21/03/2026 19:55

Just started The Terror by Dan Simmons. I like it.

GreenSedan · 21/03/2026 19:33

I just finished The Names by Florence Knapp. Absolutely loved it. My favourite book in a while. Strong recommend.

I really loved James. I felt very invested in Huck and James and loved the story arc.

I'm about to read My Life as a Fake by Peter Carey. I found it on my book shelf and can't remember if I've read it already or not. Soon to find out!

I’ve finished James by Percival Everett, but feel I would have got more out of it if I’d read Huckleberry Finn recently.

I’ve now started The Light Years by Elizabeth Jane Howard, and my next book will either be Greenwitch by Susan Cooper, or Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter by Heather Fawcett.

I found James quite disappointing tbh, considering it was a Pulitzer Prize winner. I didn’t feel invested in any of the characters and puzzled when I heard people say they were moved to tears by it!

WonkyMirror · 21/03/2026 13:04

I am currently in the early stages of riding a motorbike, I’m reading Remember You're a Rider: The Mindset Guide for New and Nervous Motorcycle Riders by Claire Jones. It’s aimed at everyone, but Claire Jones is in her 50’s and going through the menopause, same as me, and it’s a good read. I wouldn’t say I’m a nervous rider but there are days it is harder than others, and this book addresses that.

I never read self-help books usually, so it’s a first for me and I’m finding parts of it really good, rather than the full thing. I’d say that’s probabky what self-help books aim for.

@Namechangedasouting987did you increase the narration speed on Audible? I often increase to x1.2 or x1.5 if the narration is too slow. You get used to it very quickly.

No I did not try that. Sometimes I want to read it though! I often have a book going in both.

I’m about to start something new after finishing Our Evenings by Alan Hollinghurst which I thought was deathly dull

Namechangedasouting987 · 21/03/2026 12:31

So I started listening to All We Can Know by Ian McEwan as Middle England by Jonathan Coe wasn't really floating my boat. And then I had to buy the actual McEwan book as audible was going too slowly! Finished it this morning. I loved it. But I am a McEwan fan.
Going back to the Coe now... i have bought The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell, but have made a pact that I will not start that until Coe is done....
I may or may not keep to that!!!

Arran2024 · 20/03/2026 18:14

I am reading two books atm - Imperium by Robert Harris, which is the first book in his trilogy about ancient Rome and specifically Cicero, and Three Days in June by Ann Tyler. Both very different, both very good. I don't normally read two at once but I had a hairdresser appointment this afternoon and needed a thing book to pop in my bag and Imperium was too big.

My next book will be the second in the trilogy, Lustrum. I actually bought it first- in a second hand sale, without realising it was partbof a trilogy.

Hotafternoon · 20/03/2026 18:09

I usually read crime stuff but at the library I picked Blott on the Landscape by Tom Sharpe as an antidote to death and violence.

I'm starting it tonight and hope I will be laughing loudly rather than shuddering in horror. 😆

canuckup · 20/03/2026 18:01

I'm rereading Angela's Ashes

Absolutely superb book

Advicechange · 20/03/2026 16:40

I haven’t joined before but would like to.

I’m reading Shakespeare: the man who pays the rent by Judi Dench. It’s fascinating and I love her insights into the female characters she’s played but it’s hard going and dry in places and has taken me ages. Aiming to finish this month and will move on to The other mothers by Katherine Faulkner.

NotWavingButReading · 20/03/2026 16:12

I'm currently reading The Man Who made Husband's Jealous by Jilly Cooper.
I originally read all her books as they were published in the 80s and 90s. I watched Rivals on Netflix last year and loved It so decided to re-read some of Jilly's books. It goes without saying they wouldn't be published now.
I thoroughly enjoyed Polo but this one isn't quite doing It for me, partly because I don't really love the characters. What I do love is her sense of humour and the lavish descriptions of the countryside.
I've also started Americanah and next up I'm going to try North and South by Elizabeth Gaskill.

Catisheavyonmylap · 19/03/2026 15:16

‘Birdsong by Sebastian Faulkes ( last read in the 1990s, and changed my life).’

Me too! Maybe it’s time to read again.

Currently reading Anne of Green Gables because it was 99p on kindle books and I love it! so calming and gentle - just what you need as you’re dropping off to sleep and makes a nice change from my usual dystopian, misery 😁
