Do you love read autobiographies - I do!
my new year’s resolution is to read more autobiographies.
so I have just finished Matthew Perry. Feeling a bit sad as I read it after he died. He finished the book full of hope to beat his addiction and find a life partner. So sad.

next is Kathy Burke.

so which ones are you reading?

I enjoyed Robert Frasers book very much, I'm intrigued with that particular era of The Stones and of course he was a huge part of that scene,
I'm.so pleased to see someone else has read it!

Yes I’m fascinated with that era and all the things that crashed together and changed forever.
People speak so thoughtfully and without self-consciousness and are comfortable with complexity and contradiction which I really enjoyed… and it’s quite juicy!
It’s by Harriet Vyner if anyone here likes the sound of it and wants to find it.

I have recently bought Poor by Katriona O’ Sullivan after multiple recommendations.
Anybody else read this?
Seems great so far.

Yes, I really enjoyed it, great book.

Not a celebrity and may have been mentioned already but Wavewalker is the most incredible autobiography, and in audio is narrated by Suzanne Haywood.

This sounds fascinating.

‘Wild at Heart’ Jules Hudson

Just in the process of reading this, His life has been a lot more adventurous and varied than I expected (and feasibly we could have crossed paths at one point). Really enjoying it.

Also really enjoyed Lady Glenconner’s book.

Wavewalker

This is the true story of a girl who grew up at sea for almost a decade on the Schooner Wavewalker, including being shipwrecked in the Indian Ocean

I’ve read and enjoyed many of these, although like a PP I couldn’t get through Spare (decent first half). I’ve just finished Pour Me by A A Gill which I found very touching (but then I’m a longstanding member of AA). Definitely worth a read.

HoldMyWine · 12/10/2026 21:18

I like autobiography on audiobooks especially if the subject rads it themselves.
I really enjoyed Dave Grohl, Ben Elton, Andre Agassi and Jennifer Saunders.

John Cooper Clarke
Kathy Valentine
The Robert “Groovy Bob” Fraser book isn’t an autobiography but a collection of interviews of 60s movers and shakers from across the social spectrum, really engaging.

I don't usually like celeb autobiographies but Elton John's "Me" is very funny.

Lady Anne Glenconner - Lady in waiting.
Very interesting and as I am listening rather than reading I love her voice.

This was great

Hi I have just finished the Happy Nomad by Charlotte Bradman. A lovely book. It’s a memoir about how her house was repossessed and so she transitions to living in a caravan and then onto living in a camper van full time. She has walked the South west
coast path and it has inspired me that it could be one of my goals in future.

I've just started Sarah Vine, enjoying it so far.

halfpastten · 29/09/2026 16:07

I have read/listened to so many autobiographies! Just checked audible for latest:
Sarah Vine, How not to be a political wife. Agree with PP, regardless of your politics, this is very good and unflinchingly honest in parts about the Cameron Court.
Wes Streeting- starts well, fascinating childhood with mobster grandparents. Then gets boring.
Edward Snowden, Permanent record. Brilliant.
Tara Westover, Educated. Absolutely brilliant.
Obama, Dreams of my Father. Beautifully written and gripping.
JD Vance - Hillbilly Elegy. Also v well written and important insight into US society.
Raynor Winn, the salt path etc (will anyone else admit to reading them?... i confess i really enjoyed the first 2. But now may not fit into biography! )
Prince Harry, Spare. Good first half, then fizzles out, didnt finish.
Careless people (Facebook whistleblower) brilliant and important.
Good oldies- Nelson Mandella. Tony Blair (well written and better than most political biographies). David Niven!
Poor oldies - michele obama (dull), Clintons (dull), other obama book (dull) - all basically sales pitches rather than authentic.

Thank you for everyone who suggested Lady Anne Glenconner's book. I have been really enjoying it. I usually tend to stick to fiction but I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing about her life. It's a sort of strange mixture of complete an utter privilege and total neglect!
I've been listening on Audible and particularly enjoyed her reading it.

nochance17 · 16/09/2026 21:57

I really enjoyed Lady Anne Glenconner’s book. Also Boy George, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore. Britney Spears book made me feel very sorry for her. Now reading Quincy Jones.

Ilovemyshed · 16/09/2026 21:55

Recommend Dear Dodie by Valerie Grove

Well, Pat's mostly still in the game, but I mean after his playing career ended.

I just thought I’d look for the second Pat Nevin autobiography Football and how to Survive It in my local library today and there it was on the shelf, looking right at me! That never happens, I have always had to order any book that I specifically want to read, so definitely a good omen. Can’t wait to start it.

I’ve read many autobiographies but never ‘listened’ to any. Are narrated books actually the whole book or are they abridged? Takes me ages to read a book so I always imagine the narrator spending weeks recording them!

Recommend Al Pacino narrating his biography. Excellent as you’d expect from an actor. Felt he was telling me his personal story not reading from a script. A delight. There are times when he’s amusing himself with the retelling. Double delight.

I know he's a divisive character but Danny Bakers 3 books have me crying with laughter
I originally bought on my kindle but upgraded to the narrated, worth every penny

Oh yes, I used to listen to Radio 5 when he was on the breakfast show in the 1990s, I used to be driving to work crying with laughter. I have read at least one of his books several years ago, where he describes his cancer journey, that would be good use of some of my audible credits.

I finished the second Pat Nevin last week, and the Tony Adams, both were interesting listens, I think even if you aren't a football fan, both have achieved much outside the game and had difficulties to overcome.

I was also disappointed in Kathy Burke's book. It started off really well and then went into her name checking everyone she had ever worked with - got really boring. Also it was like she was trying to put into print some of the "wrongs" other people had done to her, to get her own back. I feel like she went on about her professional life too much and didn't cover her private life so much after childhood.
