Read What You Own 2026

This is a brand shiny new thread for those of us who want to continue reading what we own in 2026.
My aims for 2026 are:

  • At least half my reading will be from books I already own on 1st January 2026
  • I will buy less than a quarter of my reading new including kindle deals😱 and book club books
  • I will wait when prize lists are released to see if the books appear in the library within a week. I will not read full longlists unless I love the sound of each and every book on it.
  • For the first two months I will only read what I own- focusing on the older books on my kindle while allowing myself to read newer (but already owned) physical books
What are your RWYO aims for 2026?

Latest read both was and wasn't a RWYO - Demon Copperhead. I'd bought it on audible when it came out, and just never been in the mood for it and put it off. Picked it up on kindle when it was 99p recently, and so have both read and listened and loved it all round. Incredible book, why I put it off I don't know.

Looks like some great progress all round! I’ve managed a few on my RWYO list.

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker Loved this one.
Women of Troy by Pat Barker Good, but not as good as the previous in the trilogy*
The Voyage Home by Pat Barker Least favourite of the three, I really wanted to hear how the story of Briseis ended.
Dark is the Grave by TG Reid Not great. Horrible, narky detective, stupid mystery and resolution. I won’t carry on with this series.
The Fold by Peter Clines Starts off as an intriguing sci-fi mystery and I really enjoyed the first 2/3 but then it morphed into to some kind of horror / chase thing which was just awful. A waste of a good story.

For the past few months I have accidentally had a theme of books set on islands or partly set on islands.

I’m reading Reading in Bed by Sue Gee at the moment and if anyone ends up on an island I’m going to freak out!

Finished another 6 RWYO (and a reread of To the Lighthouse)
Christine Falls by John Banville (not bad)
The Island of Doctor Moreau- HG Wells (okay)
Ghosts by Edith Wharton (patchy- like all short stories but lovely writing)
Double Indemnity by James Cain (fun)
Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter (devastatingly good)
The Familiars by Stacey Halls (entertaining)
Full reviews on 50 Bookers
Sticking with RWYO as much as possible now until December.

You're on fire! I am back on readalongs and book club books so you are putting me to shame!

CutFlowers · 18/10/2026 17:53

I've just finished Dead Lions by Mick Herron.
I bought three in the series in the deals but really wasn't sure about the first one. Still not sure I particularly liked or followed this one! I have now seen it on TV and I think this may be an unusual case of me prefering the adaptation to the original. Am debating not bothering with the third.

Finished Forever, Interrupted - Taylor Jenkins Reid which I bought 3 or so years ago. Easy read, apparently her first. Will review on 50B thread.

ÚlldemoShúl · 07/10/2026 21:32

Finished Murder at the Vicarage and a biography of Thomas Cromwell. Really trying to stick mainly with older owned books until the end of the year.

Just finished The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood. I thought it was very good and found it intriguing. But it was a bit too esoteric for me to love.

SilverShadowNight · 03/10/2026 16:33

Just finished, and really enjoyed, Jojo Moyes, The Giver of Stars.

ÚlldemoShúl · 03/10/2026 14:40

Back on the RWYO train now that the book prize reading is done. Just finished Bring up the Bodies (full review to follow on 50 bookers) and currently reading Murder at the Vicarage and rereading To the Lighthouse. Planning to really push the RWYO now until the end of the year.

I've just finished In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote. Extremely well written and thought provoking.

MamaNewtNewt · 29/09/2026 19:55

Daphne DuMaurier has never let me down and Rebecca is brilliant.

I just finished The Puppet Show by MW Craven which I thought was very good.

TimeforaGandT · 29/09/2026 18:17

Finally finished another book which was Rebecca a reread that's been sitting on my Kindle for 7 years. Just excellent, so atmospheric.

MamaNewtNewt · 25/09/2026 08:10

Managed to read three RWYO books. Full reviews on the 50B thread.

The Central Park Five by Sarah Burns, The Locked Room by Elly Griffiths and The Last Remains by Elly Griffiths

MamaNewtNewt · 19/09/2026 22:41

Just read The Stars are Fire by Anita Shreve, nothing outstanding but I did like it.

AliasGrape · 17/09/2026 10:49

Another one which I think is RWYO, I have no recollection of buying it so I'm assuming it was a good while ago. Technilcally 'listen to what you own' as it was on Audible - Mrs Quinn's Rise to Fame - Olivia Ford, narrated by Juliet Stevenson. This was enjoyable, a little predictable and a little slow in parts, but a good comfort read/ listen especially right now when our whole house has been struck by the back to school lurgy.

AliasGrape · 14/09/2026 17:23

I finished The Summer Book by Tove Jansson last night, another one that’s been hanging around on my kindle for over a year, maybe more than two. I meant to read it during actual summer, but it was pleasant enough.

RomanMum · 13/09/2026 14:56

A couple of old books finished here too; not as old as @TonTonMacoute’s : Drop the Dead Donkey 2000 by Andy Hamilton and Alistair Beaton and The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Not keepers so two more for the charity bag.

TonTonMacoute · 13/09/2026 12:47

I have been rereading a lot of books that I have owned for decades, but unfortunately they all fall apart when I'm about halfway through, and chunks of pages come loose, which is very inconvenient.

I was listening to some old editions on A Good Read and someone chose The Transit of Venus by Shirley Hazard. I read it back in the 80s, when it was first published, and back then I nearly gave up on it. However, I persevered and ended up loving it.

Funnily enough it had been chosen by Geoff Dyer, and he said exactly the same thing. He had abandoned it for years, but went back to it later and loved it.

Anyway, I am enjoying it but want to give the heroine a good shake and tell her to stop mooning over the spoilt man child she's in love with.

I liked some early Dorothy Koomson books and liked them, but recent reads have put me off her books for life. I know someone else on the 50B thread had a similar reaction to one of her recent books.

Thanks Mama - I’m seeing one of her recent ones heavily marketed on social media too.

Two RWYO books for me - The Stone Circle and The Lantern Men by Elly Griffiths

Next two Ruth Galloway books. I enjoyed the central crimes in these, but I’m finding the Ruth / Nelson cycle pretty irritating now and wish Ruth would get some self respect and Nelson some morals.

SilverShadowNight · 09/09/2026 20:56

@SnowFrogJellyI really enjoyed The Eights.

I’ve finished This Book Made Me Think of You by Libby Page

SnowFrogJelly · 08/09/2026 00:06

Currently reading The Eights by Joanna Miller.. enjoying so far
