The Harry Potter books - I have the ones I bought when they each came out, a matching set in a box, and illustrated, pop up special editions of the first three books.

Tiddlywinkly · 23/09/2025 21:23

Pride and Prejudice - tbh I loved the 1995 BBC series and then read the book with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle on the cover. I lost it, so I got a lovely hardback edition with a 'sampler' style cover for Christmas.

The Handmaid's Tale - studied it at school and loved it. Bought myself a signed, first true edition a few years ago.

Wintering - it got me through a breakdown during the Pandemic. I loved it so much I asked for a signed special edition hardback for my birthday.

101 Dalmatians. I read the first one so often it practically fell to bits, so had to get another.

A random novel that DH bought me for Christmas two years running (no idea how he managed that, and I can't even remember what it was). I never let on, and I didn't like it all that much the first time. Both are long gone to the charity shop.

A book about bonsai - the second of which I found at a car boot sale, and is signed by the author.

Hatters Castle - abridged and unabridged
Jane Eyre - as above
Life after Birth - I buy a copy for anyone I like having a baby. Proof in black and white that you’re not losing your marbles.
The Alchemist and The English Patient, also as talking books.
Jilly Cooper - Imogen, Octavia, Bella etc - I first read these at 14, I remember asking my Grandma what necrophilia was 🤔 I gave them away then found them again in a charity shop and repeat….they take an hour to read each, silly nonsense but sometimes it’s what you need…..

There are plenty that I've owned multiple copies of one after the other because one fell apart or got lost or never returned from the person I lent it to.
I think the only books there are actually two copies of in the house are Wuthering Heights (old version and fancy version), The Secret History (bought a separate copy for DS), Tom Sawyer (me and DH both had a childhood copy) and possibly The Dark is Rising (one copy on its own and one book with all five books in the series under one cover, if that counts.)

Pride and Prejudice
Watership Down
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Eye of the World
The Snow Spider Trilogy

I used to have two copies of ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’ by John Kennedy Toole. One copy was for myself, the second was to lend to friends. I would would tell them it will be the funniest book they’d ever read, and a gratifying number of them found that they agreed. Admittedly, one or two of them weren’t keen but it seems to be one of those love it or hate it books. Somebody must have liked it so much that they kept it, as I’m down to one copy now.

All the Pamela Brown books were reprinted possibly within the last 15 odd years I got the complete set for a birthday present for a theatre loving friend who enjoys children’s book as well for her 60 th birthday they were £20.

I was as well. Curtain up is another one that has been cut. Likewise swish of the curtain by Pamela Brown was cut for the paperback.

I didn't know either of those were cut! I love Curtain Up, and will look out for HBs of both. I've just reread Golden Pavements so have been in a theatrical reading mood.

HonoriaBulstrode · 20/09/2025 21:49

Many.

Some I had to replace because the original fell apart.
Some I got rid of then bought again years later because I wanted to re-read.
Some I had then was given another, or acquired another when a relative died.
Some I had a paperback and later acquired a hardback.

Nonfiction especially, I've bought nice illustrated hardback editions when they've come out, even if I already have the paperback. Some I have three copies of - the paperback, a cheap or secondhand hardback and the illustrated edition.

Several copies of of Noel Streatfeild books. The paperbacks that I had then some hardbacks that are the originals and not abridged.

I remember discovering how heavily cut Painted Garden was and tracking down a hardback - I was so excited! I have several duplicate NS books.

Several versions of Jane Austen books such as a battered Pride and Prejudice to read in the bath, a better paperback version, and a posh hardback with lovely cover. Some first edition Mervyn Peake books and modern paperback versions.
Some accidental purchases where I only realise I've already read it 10 pages in. A cartoon book about cats that two people bought me for Christmas.

Norugratsatall · 20/09/2025 15:01

We have two copies of Pride and Prejudice- one hardback and one paperback, neither of which have been read yet. Blush

autienotnaughty · 20/09/2025 09:49

i lost all my books in a fire (sob) I only replaced books I like to read agsin and again. Which were mostly chick lit.

44PumpLane · 20/09/2025 08:33

I have the first 3 HP books in the Mina Lima editions, the first HP book in the kids illustrated edition and then all 7 "normal" so have duplicates there.

I have my original old and tatty Jurassic Park, I then have it in ebook and audiobook and have my Folio Society version of it which is a beautiful hard backed book (Jurassic Park is my favourite book)!

Latenightreader · 15/09/2025 16:52

I have most of the Chalet school books in both paperback and hardback, and the same for several L M Montgomery books and a couple of Agatha Christies.

I had three copies of Nye Bevan's In Place of Fear - one paperback but signed by another politician, and two hardbacks. I gave one of the hbs away and kept the one where someone had glued newspaper articles about Nye Bevan on the inside cover.

Three copies of Travels with my Aunt, one of my very favourite books.

Like I keep track?

If there's a book that I like to foist on people, I buy any cheap copy I can find.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/09/2025 20:03

James by percival Everett

A passion for friends by Jan Raymond

Probably loads of others. I need to do an audit.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/09/2025 19:54

Puckoon (Spike Milligan)
The Jigsaw Man (Paul Britton)

Sgtmajormummy · 03/09/2025 19:49

Lots of Wordsworth Classics from my university years which were the cheapest possible way of owning the book. They went into storage and got musty, so instead of rooting out my original copy I buy a better, preferably annotated, version.

I’ve bought and given away 3 copies of The Number One Ladies’ Detective Agency.

James Joyce’s Ulysses in 2 editions, plus annotated Kindle and cheapie Italian.
