Late to the party here, but I’ve only just got my hands on a copy.

Loved lots of it-Rokeby, Sark, the bracelet, RFM being an arse, Christmas in Masham etc but the whole murder in the vault stuff was incredibly complicated!

Why did they go out of the way to kill Tyler in the vault which had so many ways it could go wrong? Just to make a bit of money with selling some silver?

Was Semple the MI5 one? Can you be in THE regiment if you’re only 5 foot 7?

Was the sex stuff with the MP (filming girls behind a mirror) totally unrelated to the sex trafficking girls chained in a basement? Just showing that lots of men are exploiting women all over the place?

Was Oz just Griffiths? In a curly wig? Or was he the other chap-the guitarist in the band-Wade? How da was Ironbricge where Griffiths lived, from where all the other stuff was going on? Was he travelling around the country a lot?

If Tyler really thought Chloe/Yolande was kidnapped by the man who murdered her mum and was being used as a sex slave, would he not had tried to take her with him in the first place? Leaving her with him was a risky ploy.

Yeah the bit where Griff mutters “I didn’t know he was allergic to peanuts” is hilarious. Just imagine his mind whirring - ffs I did this incredibly complicated murder plot and I could have just slipped him a peanut!!!!

StartupRepair · 09/04/2026 21:29

I'm now at the happy point where I have forgotten most of the plot and ready for a re-read.

BG2015 · 29/04/2026 16:05

Just finally got round to reading this - so glad I've read it on holiday as could give my full attention to it.

Goodness the plot and subplots were so complicated I had to really concentrate. A third in I was ready to give up but so glad I persevered.

Loved it. What an ending! Wow!

Does anyone know if JKR uses the names of friends/acquaintances in her books? I'm sure she has talked of a school friend who had a car like the one in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and she may have used his name as well.

The reason I am asking as over on another thread there was discussion about Harry and Meghan Sussex staying on the island of Tanera Mòr which is owned by a secretive billionaire called Ian Wace.

An interesting article about Ian Wace was posted :

https://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2026/03/25/a-laird-for-our-times-questions-of-philanthropy-and-community-in-the-scottish-highlands/

It seems likely that JKR and Wace would know each other, their paths may have crossed related to their charity work, or just that they are both super rich people living in Scotland. Plus Ian’s second wife after his first wife died was Fiona Hardy an Australian writer of crime fiction and children’s fiction.

The way the island and nearby mainland estates is run has certain parallels with Jonathan Wace of the Running Grave, albeit I don't for a minute suggest Ian Wace is involved in anything illegal, nor is he the leader of a weird cult.
But there is control and secrecy.

" it is difficult to convey the spirit, the mood and the aesthetic of the place which Wace – and his many highly skilled employees – have created there. Not least of these difficulties is that all staff and visitors have had to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), thus preventing or inhibiting the communication of their experiences to the outside world. When asked about the reasons for the NDAs Wace, or his spokespeople, resort to saying ‘Tanera may seem like a mysterious place sometimes, but this is largely to keep the mystique and magic for those who visit’"

"At one level the island remains a place for the wealthy, the rich and famous to be invited for short restorative stays. Who these people continues to be a well-kept secret but, of course, rumours abound about celebrities and members of the royal family being spotted boarding the speedboat from the Badentarbat jetty to the island. I return to the publicised charitable aims of the project below, but it needs reiterating that Tanera has been developed as a location to please the business elites and the wealthy of the world. This is made clear by the SIE ‘Operations and Guest Coordination lead’ who, in a Linked In post (June 2024) described the work of the team thus: ‘From wellness retreats and escapes for UHNWIs to offsite gatherings for global finance leaders our team creates space for unique transformative experiences in one of the worlds (sic) most remote and stunning locations’"

"Like many powerful and rich men, Wace attempts to control this public narrative, and has thus far been successful in doing so."

I just feel sure JKR has used his name. Whether as an in joke between friends or a dark dig at someone she is not so keen on I couldn't say.

Anyway please do have a look at the article and share your thoughts. Also if anyone has any recollections regarding whether JKR sometimes uses names of people she knows. (She obviously collects names from other sources or makes up ones with meaning, especially in the Harry Potter books). I think she has talked about it briefly in interviews.

Interesting …

Civilservant · 12/08/2026 07:53

how curious, @FannyCann

It’s a distinctive name, too.

thirdfiddle · 12/08/2026 19:25

Maybe subconscious association? I don't feel like she'd deliberately name a negative character after someone in real life, even someone she disliked. Think there have been occasions she used minor character names as a little Easter egg for someone.

I have a question about height. I have really enjoyed seeing all the pieces laid out on the re-read. So many clues and so many misdirections with all the lions and bridges.

But Griff is short. Wouldn't that have been noticeable even on low quality CCTV when he exited pretending to be Tyler/William Wright?

And it was him with Medina as Oz, he didn't get one of his minions to do that bit? In which case wouldn't the neighbours have said he was short? Or did they?

Tyler was short. All the men involved were a similar height hence the difficulty identifying the body. Niall semple, Griff, Tyler, Dan delion and Rupert were all short men.

I’ve just re-listened to the audiobook, and still have some questions! (Partly because I nodded off a couple of times while listening and think I may have missed a bit).

Why does Shanker seem so sure that the murder in the vault was a paid hit? Who was the hitman who was boasting about it? Shanker hasn’t been wrong before.

When the man whose name I forget threatened Robin and threw the dagger at her, am I getting confused, or did he call her a ‘pit pony’, suggesting that actually he was sent by Valentine Loncaster, not Branford?

If anyone who has a paper copy can flick back and look, let me know!

I cant answer these. I've just re-listened too. I found I had to chatgpt it in places to explain it all. I think the biggest issue was trying to weave Charlotte family into this book. I don't think it needed it and it confused matters.

I’d be wary of using AI to ask about book plots - I’ve known it to make fairly daft mistakes before.

Based on my personal experience of it and nothing more, book plots, titles and who wrote what are what it gets wrong more than anything else.

PeanutGallerist · 09/10/2026 12:39

Yup, after Google AI’s pitiful confusion over The Archers I wouldn’t be relying on AI for interpretations of fiction.

But I can’t answer questions on this volume - it was needlessly over-complicated.

RubieChewsDay · 09/10/2026 15:26

I think this was one of the most confusing parts of the book, the hit was supposedly taken out on Danny De Lyon (excuse spelling) by that sleazy politician bloke but he wasn't actually dead. It was a totally unnecessary part of an already convoluted plot, and I think that JKR could easily have found another way of shoehorning their trip to Sark in.

RubieChewsDay · 09/10/2026 15:28

Anyone really hoping that the next book is better? I think this is my second least favourite of the series, edging only slightly ahead of Silkworm.

I skimmed a lot of the murder plot of this one as it was really convoluted and I was wasn't really bothered about who killed who. I'm just in it for the Strike/Robin storyline!

I like Silkworm though but struggled with the chat room stuff on Ink Black Heart.

Looking forward to the Running Grave being televised and the rumours are it might be showing this Christmas time!

fridaynightzzz · 10/10/2026 09:31

I’ve been relistening to them all, hoping there would be news of the next book at the end. Just about to restart HM. Hope it’s better second time around.
Troubled Blood is my favourite.

I agree. HM wasn't my favourite and went off on all sorts of tangents. My favourite was Running Grave. It was like book heroin!

Danny DeLyon had threatened to reveal the secret filming flat and so one of Branfoot's young men was hired to deal with it.

The person paid to do it is a contact of Shanker's and boasts he did it in the vault.

The storyline is important because it creates all of the misdirection in terms of who is following Robin/ issuing threats. It is also important in showing that the body isn't likely to be Jason Knowles giving them a reason to take the case and to carry on digging.

The Pit Pony is nothing to fo with the dagger throwing. It is the name Charlotte and her cronies (I.e Valentine and co) gave to Robin. She's from Yorkshire. They see her as his little assistant and not challenging him, unlike Charlotte. This echoes what she wrote in her suicide note and jealousy of Robin.

I think the Longcasters are used to show us that Rokeby is quite decent underneath the rock and roll lifestyle.

Deano and Valentine treat their staff appallingly. Rokeby says 'I don't know what I'd do without you' to his. I think it's a useful tool in showing us why Strike hates everything to do with the lifestyle of the rich but needs to soften towards his father.

It's grown on me as a book. I think the fact that Robin is in crisis and their relationship is strained is why it's not enjoyable in the way others are. The Ink Black Heart was Strike's 'need to change" book and this is Robin's.

I love the Running Grave but think both this one and TIBH give more and more on re reading/listening.

If you could draw a diagram that explains that all I think I would be on board. Tolkien was onto something with the maps.

Impatient, don’t want to have to wait a good while yet for the next one!

I like the title ‘Good Night, Evangeline’!

Think some parts of the one with the cult could be even more nail biting and scarier on TV.
