I would love to listen to audiobooks on my commute, but every time I have tried a subscription to audible, it never works for me. I find I cannot concentrate, think the narrator is reading too slowly and I just find my mind drifting. I am probably just not listening by to the right narrators. Has anyone got any recommendations?

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Dutch House by Ann Patchett - narrated by Tom Hanks, sublime.

Fiona Shaw reading Anne Enright. Unbeatable.

The testaments is a great audio book. 3 narrators - all fantastic

Regarding Borrowbox / Libby, I think it depends on your local library service which one they use. Fairly sure most only use one or the other.

My library has both

In case anyone isn't aware, if you have an Amazon Music subscription you get one Audible credit included each month. Use it or lose it.

I only discovered that recently!

I tend to listen to the sample first just in case the narrator has a voice that I don't get along with.

Agree with Lisa Jewell, and if you like these kinds of books the Claire Douglas ones are good too.

Some I've enjoyed recently:
The Wedding People by Alison Espach
So Thrilled for You by Holly Bourne
Rachel's Holiday read by the author Marian Keyes
The Examiner by Janice Hallett (all her others are good too)

Stephen Fry reading Jeeves & Wooster and Sherlock Holmes is a joy to listen to. If you are an Audible member his series on the Secrets of the Victorians, Edwardians and the Roaring 20's is also a great listen. Actually anything audible book/series he has done has been great

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie read by Adjoa Andoh is brilliantly narrated

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver read by Jeremy Northam is excellent, very unnerving if you like something scary

Agree that The Heart's Invisible Furies is excellently narrated and The London Rivers Series read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith

Really enjoyed The Shinning by Stephen King narrated by Campbell Scott. I downloaded the follow up Dr Sleep narrated Will Patton. His pronoucetaion of some words are so much like Trumps (I have listen to other books he has narrated and really enjoyed then and not noticed this before, but now I have I can't unhear it

I do not enjoy the narration when it is very theatrical so some actors narration I have not enjoyed, especially with the classics

Just jumping on to say if you’re in the uk try the Libby app. It’s free and you just put in your library memberships and can download available books. I listen to books on my commute and while I do housework/get ready for the day etc

I mentioned Borrowbox earlier which sounds the same, I'll look into the Libby App too in case it has different titles, hadn't heard of it before so thanks.

Absolutely find the speed button and have a play about with it. I listen at 1.2 as a default and often need to speed up even more but very rarely listen at slower than this.
Type free into the search bar and try a few different ones to see what grabs you. The free books aren't all old or rubbish - I listened to loads of good stuff by current authors. I guess they make a book available for free to try and hook people who will then pay for others by the same author if they enjoy it.

I listen to a lot of books now, but I can only ever concentrate when I'm also doing something else like driving, sewing, cleaning the kitchen etc. Otherwise my brain starts thinking of other things and I realise that I haven't actually heard anything for 10 mins or so.

Yes! This is me too, I don't have the attention span just to sit and listen, so only try if I'm on a run, cleaning the house etc.

Dutchhouse14 · 10/06/2025 18:42

I recommend The vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O farrell, read by a Daniella Nardine (sp?)
Fabulous book and narrater ( naratter is female and scottish for those that love the accent!)
Narrator is just as important as story imo.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 10/06/2025 17:39

Oh, and Frankie by Graham Norton, read of course by Graham.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 10/06/2025 17:38

Also love a bit of Bill Bryson, particularly A Walk In The Woods.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 10/06/2025 17:37

Another vote for Project Hail Mary and The Martian here. My head thinks I ought to hate them, but loved them both.

My usual Audible recommendation to new folk is Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

Mumteedum · 10/06/2025 17:35

Try some of the free ones?

Richard Armitage is a great narrator. His own books are ok. Geneva was better than his other one but I really like the joy Ellis books he narrates.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/06/2025 11:48

None Of This Is True by Lisa Jewell was fantastic as audio. The actresses Nicola Walker and Louise Brearley did it. It’s about 2 women who meet by chance in a pub and how one pushes her way into the others life

Project Hail Mary was also riveting, about a man alone on a mission in space

Nicola walker is a great narrator. It was good this one. Agree.

verityveritas · 10/06/2025 17:34

What kind of books do you like?
narrators are like marmite so recommending one can be tricky, personally I like David Rintoul, but some reviewers are not so keen. I’ve recently finished ‘Snare’ read by Suzannah Hampton. It was one recommended on here and was excellent I listened at a slightly faster speed.
My first audiobook was the complete bbc radio drama of the chronicles of Narnia, which I got for a very long car journey with the kids when they were small! I find I have to be in the right mood for certain genres. Sometimes I start a book, can’t get into it, and then listen a few months later. I generally read chick-lit, but listen to thrillers. I like an easy read before bed, but something more exciting when doing chores!

PizzaSophiaLoren · 10/06/2025 17:15

Love Nina by Nina Stibbe is wonderful. Interesting, funny and sweet.

The Heart's Invisible Furies is beautifully narrated. I have listened to many John Boyne books on Audible and all have been great.I listen at 1.75x speed.

Sauvignonblanket · 10/06/2025 16:52

I've just finished Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and thought the narrators were excellent

100% agree on Kobna Holdbrook Smith and Rivers of London too

Cheguevarahamster · 10/06/2025 16:47

I love audio books. So many to recommend - but for a start.
Project Hail Mary and The Martian - both by Andy Weir.
Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch narrated by the brilliant Kobna Holdbrook Smith. (He is a god amongst narrators!) . Cant wait until his new book comes out next month.
