Mine will be Henry Mackenzie's The Man of Feeling. What do you hope to wrap up by Hogmanay?

Mine was Cityboy, a memoir of someone who was an analyst in the City during the boom years when they'd get guaranteed bonuses of millions for doing nothing special.

I got that one off the back of reading the excellent The Trading Game by Gary Stevenson but unfortunately this one didn't live up to it. I finished it but it wasn't a patch on Stevenson's book. Quite a lot of self indulgent, look how many drugs I took and how clever I was moving banks to get more money, whereas Stevenson was a little more introspective and went into the intricacies of the job day to day and the industry.

Pierre Martin, Madame le commissaire und das geheimnisvolle Bild. What better way to improve my rusty German than reading cosy crime.

Time40 · 02/01/2025 11:46

@Gotback I hope you enjoy it! It's a tragedy that AW is so little known now. One day I hope there will be an AW revival, like there was for Barbara Pym.

@Gotback I think we might have similar taste in novels. Do you know Angus Wilson? If you don't, you would probably like him. Late Call is superb, as is The Middle Age of Mrs Eliot.

Thank you for the recommendation. I've heard of AW but don't think I've read anything of his. I'll give Late Call a go as my first of 2025.

I’ve just read The Women by K Hannah. I had high hopes as had amazing reviews. I was so disappointed. Thought it was dreadful!

Flowers90 · 31/12/2024 19:37

Just finished the 1st of the seven sisters and about to start the 2nd

MissMarplesNiece · 31/12/2024 18:11

@hopeishere Yes, I've enjoyed it a lot. It's a slow book - but not in a bad way. Hollinghurst is such a good writer.

I'm coming to the end of Our Evenings by Alan Hollinghurst which will be my last book of 2024.

DH gave me a copy of Butter for Christmas, I think that will be my first read of 2025.

Have you enjoyed it? It's on my list just waiting for it to come down in price!

hopeishere · 31/12/2024 16:00

The Story of the Forest. It was ok, started well but tailed off. It was my 54th book this year!

RedRosie · 31/12/2024 15:55

I'm just reading Elizabeth Strout Tell me everything, which is the first of hers I've read. I didn't know what to expect but I'm loving it.

Then I have to start Butter (Asako Yuzuki) for bookclub in February. I like my bookclub, which has been running for a few years now, but it does suck up reading time!

The bird watcher by William Shaw. Set where I grew up. The first in a series.

Alltheburpees · 31/12/2024 15:38

Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan.
I know it’s not very long but Ive started it three times now.
I really want to like it as it seems really popular on here.

ShelfObsessed · 31/12/2024 15:37

An abridged audiobook of The Spy Who Came In From The Cold.

I’d prefer the full version but that isn’t going to be released until February and this was free with Borrowbox.

PierceMorgansChin · 31/12/2024 15:31

The Vessel by Adam Nevill but its really disappointing, I could have spent that tenner on something else

MyLadyGreensleeves · 31/12/2024 15:22

The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters.
Keep hearing rumours that she is writing another and I hope they're true!

Fool's Assassin by Robin Hobb. Been putting off finishing the last 3 books in the 16 book world because I don't want to leave the MC. I'm assuming there will be a sad ending.

I was absolutely bereft when I finished the Fitz/Fool series. Was reading them through pregnancy/night feeds with DC2 so they have a special place in my heart. Although some of it is a bit of an ordeal…

Kaminari · 31/12/2024 12:00

I'm rereading Discovery of Witches because I was struggling to find something equally cosy. Just finished Slewfoot which didn't hit the spot.

Cassiopeialark · 31/12/2024 11:52

The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell. If I finish it today, I will have read 2 books since Christmas!

EveInEden · 31/12/2024 11:48

Liveships are my favourite books ever. I tend to have a break between each set. I think this first one in the final series is 688 pages long.

I’ll finish Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb for sure, that will take me to 39 books for the year. I’ve also got about 6 hours left of Wolf Hall to go on audio, though I don’t think I’ll manage it all in time which is incredibly annoying as I was hoping for a nice round 40!

I just finished the Liveships trilogy by Hobb yesterday! She’s great.

After three 900-page books in a row I’m going lightweight with Curtis Sittenfield’s Romantic Comedy to end the year.

TonTonMacoute · 31/12/2024 11:27

Will definitely finish Comet in Moominland today.

I'm also reading Susan Hill's Risk of Darkness, which I'm halfway through but don't think I will quite finish.

Whatsinstorenow · 31/12/2024 09:13

Not long finished Erotic stories for Punjabi widows by Balli Jaswal, funny, just starting Out of character by Alison Steadman (a gift for Christmas).

Unless I finish it tonight - totally possible as it's a bit of a page turner - The Vanishing of Class 3B by Jackie Kabler.

whatausername · 30/12/2024 18:46

I lied 😫I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory instead 😃

Sometimes an urge just strikes.
