How can I have missed this book? Pure genius and magical. I love children's literature so any recommendations appreciated. Another favourite was Wolf Wilder, Katherine Rundell.

Just don't ever, ever be tempted to watch the 1999 film of Tom's Midnight Garden or the 2007 The Seeker (spit here) 'based' on the Dark is Rising. So bad.

LastNameLeft · 16/12/2024 07:49

Minnow on the Say and a little later but The Indian in the Cupboard.

Yes, I was coming on to recommend her 'Fire & Hemlock' for a similar vibe to 'Tom's Midnight Garden'!

That was wonderful! Bought her books for my children, read them myself with great enjoyment. Howl's Moving Castle is another favourite. Classic animated film now. I think there was a BBC series based on Archer's Goon.

Herwoggle · 16/12/2024 07:06

I also recently reread the ghost of Thomas kempe which was another fav!

Herwoggle · 16/12/2024 07:02

Charlotte sometimes was my favourite book as a child. It has stayed with me all my life.

You could try " the ghost of gosswater " by Lucy strange

The afterwards by a f harrold
Letters to the lighthouse by Emma carroll if you wanted some modern authors!

I love Tom’s Midnight Garden and have read it all my three boys but it’s so difficult to make it through the last chapter without breaking down and sobbing

I went to see the stage show with my DDs and every adult was in tears at the end.

DrCoconut · 16/12/2024 00:02

Tom's midnight garden is one of the best books ever. I always wanted a grandfather clock when I was in junior school. The TV series of it was not bad but the film about 20 years ago was a big let down.

EBearhug · 15/12/2024 23:53

Charlotte Sometimes is actually part of a trilogy, but it's difficult to get hold of the other two, and they can be very expensive.

Margaret Mahy wrote some good ones - I loved The Changeover. Can't remember other titles just now, but they were Puffin Plus imprints.

Oh, Robert Westall, Devil on the Road. Most of his stuff is good, but in that one, it goes back to 17th century Puritan England.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 15/12/2024 23:39

I love so many of these books! The first bit of Children of the Dust, describing the nuclear attack, terrified me. It was the literary equivalent of Threads. Marianne Dreams,The Shadow Guests (with the ghostly carriage that stopped) and Come Back, Lucy were also very creepy. Did anyone read The Stone Cage by Nicholas Stuart Gray, which was a retelling of the Rapunzel story from the point of view of the witch’s cat?

I’m off to see if I can find a copy of the Hobgoblin book someone recommended!

Yourinmyspot · 15/12/2024 23:32

Goodnight Mr Tom. I can’t remember the author.

Mmmkaay · 15/12/2024 23:28

The Children of Green Knowe is truly magical, especially at Christmas. I also loved Charlotte Sometimes and The Little White Horse.

IsadoraQuagmire · 15/12/2024 23:24

There's a whole Green Knowe series, it's not just The Children of Green Knowe.

And apart from books already mentioned, how about Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr.

JonesTheSteam · 15/12/2024 23:15

Joan Aiken's The Shadow Guests is a book that always stayed with me.

A Pattern of Roses by K.M. Peyton

Baital · 15/12/2024 23:08

The Children of Green Knowe. The moment Tolly and Mrs Oldknowe sit together listening to a child being sung to sleep 200 years ago still sends shivers down my spine. Just lovely.

mumsnoangel · 15/12/2024 23:05

How about Geoffrey Trease? I loved Cue for Treason. Very exciting. I too adored Tom's Midnight Garden and read it to my daughter. Loved history so a big vote for Alison Uttley A Stitch in Time.

SybilTheSpy · 15/12/2024 23:05

another book I've thought of that I don't think has been mentioned is Hobberdy Dick by Katherine Briggs. Published around the same time as Tom's Midnight Garden I believe. It's set in the 17th century and concerns a little hobgoblin who guards over a manor house and the Puritan family who move in.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 15/12/2024 23:02

@HRkittenheels I loved The Changes books but they don’t seem to have had a revival. I still remember a bit from the last book where the rest of Europe were disgusted by the Changes as they got the English weather.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 15/12/2024 22:56

A book that’s similar in style is Charlotte Sometimes, as mentioned by other posters. Superb time slip story set in a boarding school during WW1. It’s beautifully written and stays with you.

For general reading, if you haven’t done so already, read most of Diana Wynne Jones (again echoing another poster). The Homeward Bounders has some similarities in themes (loss, for example) with Tom’s Midnight Garden and Charlotte Sometimes but is more Sci-Fi/fantasy in style. I would read the Chrestomanci books first though. Susan Cooper should also be mentioned just in case you’ve missed the Dark is Rising series. Another good book is A Monster Calls.

The best children’s books just get it - and I don’t quite know what ‘it’ is!

DoggoQuestions · 15/12/2024 22:52

The land of roar (and it's sequels)

The polar bear explorers club (and it's sequels)

CatherineCawoodsbestie · 15/12/2024 22:52

Another incredible time slip novel - a bit later - is Tim Kennemore’s book Changing Times. Actually, all of her (yes Tim Kennemore is female) books. They are all out of print but available second hand.

The Giver by Lois Lowry and Children of the dust by Louise Lawrence - set in the future

Another time slip one is Locked in Time, Lois Duncan.

And the other books by Goodnight Mister Tom author Michelle Magorian - Back home (my favourite), a little love Song and Cuckoo in the nest.

These are all a bit later though. I know and love most of the suggestions made. Would also add The Children Who Lived in a barn as a mid century great book , albeit v different genre.

love Tom’s Midnight Garden and this thread!

coronafiona · 15/12/2024 22:49

I loved the wolves of willoughby chase when I was little

Oh - one more classic: Come Back Lucy by Pamela Sykes. Nearly as good as Tom’s Midnight Garden (not quite, but nearly!)

I remember being so ✨spooked✨ by Come Back, Lucy.

Reetpetitenot · 15/12/2024 22:48

P L Travers, Rumer Godden.
