Welcome to the Mumsnet 'Rather Dated' Book Group, where we read and discuss fiction from the 1930s to the 1990s that would have been described as 'contemporary' in its day.

The best introduction to the 'rather dated' concept would be to read the wonderful thread which inspired this group:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/what_were_reading/4596284-rather-dated?reply=119670989

To summarise, a number of posters expressed disappointment that literature of the 20th Century is often dismissed as 'rather dated' because society has moved on from many of the values and lifestyles described.

Previous posters decided to create a reading group where the literary merits of such fiction can be appreciated, with any 'rather dated' elements being a point of interest rather than a reason to dismiss a novel.

We read one book a month. Our first book, that inspired the original thread, was The Road to Lichfield by Penelope Lively. We have been going for about 18 months now, and each new book gets its own discussion thread, started on the first of the month.

Our March 2024 book is Penelope Fitzgerald's The Bookshop. We will begin the discussion of this on 1 April.

Please do join the thread whether you want to take part in the discussion or just place mark to follow it.

Fellow Rather Dated people, please add anything important I might have missed!

(With huge thanks to ImJustMadAboutSaffron for the original thread and idea).

I hope Antarcticant, who started the last thread, won’t mind that I’ve started this new one.

I just finished reading a book, published in 1977, set either 1975 or 1976. I went on Amazon to look at some reviews (I know these are not worth readi...

That would suit me, Fuzzy - not sure I can get hold of a copy that quickly either!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 29/09/2024 09:40

I think we're late on choosing a book @ChessieFL ! I don't mind waiting a bit longer until the end of October and start the thread then. What do others think?

ChessieFL · 29/09/2024 08:51

I won’t be ready by then as I’m getting it through the library so need to wait for it to arrive then be able to go and pick it up before I can read. I had thought we were reading during October for discussion in November!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 29/09/2024 08:28

I'll start the thread on the 7th of October if that's okay because I won't be ready before then. I'm presently in the middle of this month's instalment of 'Martin Chuzzlewit' and Dickens will not be rushed!

MotherofPearl · 29/09/2024 08:10

Thanks Fuzzy. I'll definitely join in - will have a quick glance back through the book to jog my memory.

Great! We'll go with this for our October book. I'll start the thread if you like @MotherofPearl (give you a break!).

MotherofPearl · 28/09/2024 18:58

I loved The Country Girls trilogy. I didn't read it very long ago so probably won't reread but will gladly join in the discussion. I could do with finishing a few more on my TBR pile so this works well for me.

Great idea, not an author I have read before but looking forward after everyone speaking so highly of her

Terpsichore · 28/09/2024 17:09

Oh yes, good idea. It’s been many years since I read it and would like to re-visit.

ChessieFL · 28/09/2024 10:32

I’m happy with that suggestion. I’ve never read anything by her either.

StellaOlivetti · 28/09/2024 09:14

Oh yes yes yes please! I love her so much.
I would give my right arm to write like she does. I have been AWOL for a while from the thread but hopefully back for good now.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 28/09/2024 09:04

Any ideas for our next book?
Could I suggest The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien? She died recently, 27th of July. I haven't read anything by her yet. The trilogy is on Kindle for 5.99.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 02/09/2024 08:32

Thank you MotherofPearl! I'll be along soon. * *

📚 'Rather Dated' August: Jocelyn Playfair’s ‘A House in the Country’📚 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/whatweree_reading/5155981-rather-dated-august-jocelyn-playfairs-a-house-in-the-country

Discussion thread open. Hope to join you there soon when I've caught up.

We also need to choose our next book!

Sorry to hear that Stella. I agree; books are a wonderful refuge.

I thought that would be me, Stella, that I wouldn't be taking part in this one.
I hope things look up for you soon 🌼

StellaOlivetti · 31/08/2024 14:42

Im afraid I wasn’t able to get hold of a copy at a reasonable price, and no copy in our library. I was annoyed because it sounds right up my alley. I’m consoling myself with Dorothy Whipple’s short stories … all I have left of her oeuvre, and a Miss Read. My personal life is in disarray at the moment, and Miss Read is a great comfort. Thank goodness for books, is what I say.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 31/08/2024 09:27

It's a great group. Thanks for your recommendations Chickoletta.

Chickoletta · 31/08/2024 09:26

What a great group! As an English teacher, I read a lot of current writers and classics (of course), but my comfort reads are Rosamunde Pilcher and Winston Graham. I’ve loved Pilcher’s ‘September’ this summer. ‘Coming Home’ and ‘The Shell Seekers’ are my all-time favourites though.

Expo23 · 31/08/2024 09:19

Glad to have discovered thw thread. Hopefully I can join on the next book. I have put it on watch and I will keep an eye on notifications.

MotherofPearl · 31/08/2024 09:11

Oh dear, just me then! I'll start the chat tomorrow but will be a bit late adding my own thoughts. Glad all the regulars are still reading along. Smile

ChessieFL · 31/08/2024 05:13

I have read it but also happy to wait until everyone’s ready to discuss.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 30/08/2024 22:28

Hello all! Yes, I've read it. Very luckily, my library reservation came through at the right time!
I don't mind waiting a bit either before we talk about it.

Terpsichore · 30/08/2024 22:11

I happened to be reading it when we chose it so I've finished it, but happy to wait until everyone’s ready.

(just edited to say, glad you enjoyed London Belongs To Me, @MotherofPearl!)

MotherofPearl · 30/08/2024 21:46

Is anyone still reading along? I think we'd agreed to read Playfair's House in the Country next, with discussion opening on 1 September, but I'm afraid that though I have a copy of the book, I've not made a start.
