Oh I was about to recommend The Heart's Invisible Furies! I can sometimes zone out with audio books, but found myself stopping what I was doing to listen so often with that.

All very enjoyable

Some writers are made for audiobook, others not so much. I love Virginia Woolf and Joseph Conrad, but I wouldn’t recommend listening to them.

Dickens, however, is perfect, because his novels are full of vivid and unusual voices, which a good reader can bring alive. Evelyn Waugh is also great (Michael Maloney reading Waugh’s Decline and Fall is my all-time favourite).

Stephen Fry reading P. G. Wodehouse and Sherlock Holmes is bliss. Douglas Adams, Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, and H G Wells are also great.

How about children’s books? In general, it’s best to stick to books with simple language (avoid people like Henry James, for example). I love Thomas Hardy, but when I listen to him on audiobook I often find my attention wandering. But with The Wind in the Willows, or Kipling’s Jungle Book, or Lewis’s Narnia stories, I’m gripped. Philip Pullman is also perfect for audio.

it’s a really wonderful story about a young man, newly qualified as an embalmer who volunteers to help with the tragedy at Aberfan landslide. And his life before and after this life changing event.

It made me sob, laugh…and really think! It’s the best book I’ve listened to/read for years

Just make sure you get the unabridged versions - I always feel so cheated when I use an Audible credit and it's 2 hours not 14!

I've enjoyed Spare by Prince Harry - whatever you think it's compelling stuff, also Time to Think as previously mentioned. Forensic journey through a public service fuck up and Paul McKenna on Anxiety which actually is pretty good for a self help book, he doesn't piss around telling you for thirteen chapters waffle that's irrelevant, cracks on fairly quickly with practical stuff.

What sort of books do you like OP?
If you like light hearted, bit daft, and a fun narrator the Agatha Raisin series are good, with Penelope Kieth narrating.
If you like Gothic horror or sci-fi the BBC radio dramas are good.
If you like the supernatural and suspense the secrets of Cricklley Hall by James Herbert read by David Rintoul is good, and the woman in black by Susan Hill, can't remember the narrator.
If supernatural detective stories is more your thing the Detective McLean series by James Oswald are okay...not realistic, but if you don't mind that they are enjoyable.

I really like David Jackson, 'the resident' was my favourite the bad guy has an incredibly likeable streak (I think that's why I like Jackson's books because his characters are often complex, and you kinda feel sympathy for some of the 'baddies'! Some of his books have quite an interesting moral dilemma which if you like that sort of thing the 'the rule' is brilliantly read, and really quite thought provoking.

I love Joanna Lumley's voice, find her very soothing, really enjoyed her reading of Pride and Prejudice.

If I want light relief and a giggle the "The One Hundred Year Old Man who climbed out the window and disappeared" read by Peter Kenny is brilliantly entertaining, and I enjoyed the 'why mummy..." book series can't remember the narrator but she's brilliant!

I'm Glad my Mom Died has been my favourite of the year so far. Mermaid of Black Conch is great on audiobook too.

As a pointer, what books do you enjoy?

The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch are amazing on audio book narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith He's brilliant, the accents he does are amazing, from super posh English toff to Gkaswegian, to Sierra Leone, cockney....

Such a talent.

The Dresden Files wrote by Jim Butcher and narrated by James Marsters.
There is 17 books in the series so loads to go at but they need to be listened to in the correct order. Each book is between 12 and 16 hrs so you really get your monies worth too.

I agree with pp , Bill bryson is great.

Some of my recommendations are super popular but just in case you haven't listened or read yet -

• the Thursday murder club series (particularly nice as audiobooks I think)
• anything taylor Jenkins Reid but particularly the 7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo and daisy Jones and the six
• detective Dan Riley series by Anna-lou weatherly are free on kindle unlimited at the moment and I've been enjoying those.
