I think we need a whole new thread.....
Half way through Wolf Brother, then need to read Curous Dog, then Eragon, then my new set of Michael Morpurgo!

DS1 and I abandoned "Dragon Rider" a few chapters in - he wasn't making headway and I started reading it, but, like you, wasn't that impressed.

We are reading Lemony Snickett together at night because he finds it too sad to read alone.

I must check out the James Bond Junior books because they, and Hitchhiker, would be right up DS1's street.

Hello!
I want to read Silverfin and Bloodfever if it's any good. There are also some texts at school that I haven't read - Two weeks with the Queen and something else I can't even remember the title of.
I read Dragon Rider (Cornelia Funke) this week, but wasn't that impressed. Has anyone read any of her books in German? I think the translation is slightly stilted, and would love to read the original.

Roisin - I have been meaning to email you . Sorry. DD has read the first Alex Rider but hasn't been keen to read others. She is completely absorbed by the Ann(e) of Green Gables series at the moment. She also enjoyed some Pete Johnson books and some Ayckbourn plays. I can provide titles should you be interested. Too tired to think. Took DDs to see The Bartered Bride today in Covent Garden and feel physically and emotionally drained. Had tears streaming down my face at the end because it was so wonderful.

DS1 quite enjoys a bit of death yoyo, so may be right up his street!

Has your dd read the Alex Rider books?

yoyo · 06/01/2006 19:25

DD1 read Blood Fever over Christmas but didn't enjoy it as much as Silverfin. She thought there was too much death and Italian - I haven't read either so can't comment.

DS1's not read those - possibly a target for his Christmas book tokens, as yet unspent. They featured on Newsround tonight and he looked quite interested, and I've heard excellent things of them.

Hey - we haven't been on here for ages!

Have you read the sequel to Wolfbrother? (Spirit Walker). DS1 got it for Christmas, and I wasn't keen as I hadn't particularly enjoyed Wolfbrother, but he kept trying to persuade me to read it so I did, and it's great - far superior to the first one.

Maybe now he will take up my recommendations. He still hasn't read Montmorency, or The Bad Beginning!

On this theme this week I had my best lesson so far. The teacher had left as cover work for yr7s: 30 mins quiet reading, then class discussion on what they're currently reading and favourite authors! I was in heaven! I really felt I brought some inspiration and enthusiasm to the class.

Oh my gosh, Roisin and YorkieGirl - you are so well read!! What mines of information!! I like children's lit too but haven't read that much of it - my dc1 is 4 so we are reading slightly different books from you - but I will look at this thread in detail for more ideas on things to read. Thank you!

roisin · 17/02/2005 18:19

I'm reading more children's fiction than ds1 atm ... He's recently read Tolkein: Two Towers, and is now starting Hitchhiker's Guide!

I'm reading Grim Tuesday. Recently even read one of his Goosebumps books, and was horrified at how much I enjoyed it!
I really should grow up

MarsLady · 17/02/2005 18:06

Glad you're enjoying the Garth Nix series. I'm about to source some more books for DS1. There's a lovely guy in the bookshop who is always spot on with his recommendations for all of my kids.

roisin · 09/02/2005 19:53

Yes, Sabriel is the first one.

I know the feeling. We only have one (pathetically small) bookshop in the town, and I still manage to spend far too much money on books!

What did you spend your fiver on?

Lirael, Sabriel and Abhorsen are fantastic, exquisitely written. Very dark in places: basically it's all about necromancers and controlling death etc. I'm not sure I should even 'approve' of it It's certainly not something I would want ds1 reading for some considerable while.

Hi! Marslady - don't know if you'll see this, but thanks for the recommendation way back for Garth Nix: Mister Monday. You are certainly right about it being a bit odd, and taking a bit of getting into, but it's a great book. Definitely a series I want to buy for the shelf, as I'm sure dss will enjoy them at some point. (DS1 is engrossed in the Tolkein atm so it'll be a while before he gets round to anything, and will probably want to read some light rubbish then!)

What are you reading right now Yorkiegirl?

MunchedTooManyMarsLady · 04/02/2005 19:55

Phew! Glad to hear it. Let me know when you are ready for some more books. I have so many
