I'm desperate to get engrossed in a book again.

Very little seems to interest me right now.

I love dystopian novels.

Over the years, I've loved:

Handmaids Tale
Flawed
The Road
World War Z
Brave New World

Found these ok:

Vox
Station Eleven
The Chrysalids
1984
I am legend

And loads more I can't remember!

Have you read anything along these lines that you would recommend?

Those multiple replies were jolly disturbing!

Anyway, I second "Who Have Never Known Men" by Jacqueline Harpman.

The Stand by Stephen King
Earth Abides (can't remember the author!)
The Hunger Games series

One just finished the TV series of The Stand. That was some weird 😲😲😲!!

Oh yes. Swan Song is another good one.

stringbean · 09/01/2023 21:30

I'd recommend The Mandibles by Lionel Shriver. Looks at a potential near future following almost complete economic collapse - interesting reading in light of what we're living through currently.

The Death of Grass is the bleakest dystopian novel I've ever read. I think it is even more depressing than The Road and that is saying something - stuff goes wrong then falls apart in no time at all. It's a terrifying idea with a follow up of humans at their very worst. It's utterly brilliant but make sure you're feeling robust.

I’d second swan song. Currently £173 on Amazon but free on unlimited. Shame - my youngest thought we’d make a mint as I seem to have acquired multiple copies.

girl with all the gifts + its sequel boy on the bridge.

The wall
The ship
Gather the daughters

I've just given up on The Wall, @Theredjellybean

Not sure if it was the book or my lack of concentration.

A YA one - Only Ever Yours.

An adult one - The Girl With All The Gifts.

Thanks so much, everyone.

What amazing recommendations,

Just ordered a few on Amazon, including a The Miracle Inspector which I first read years ago and want to re-read and highly recommend.

I'll report back - thanks again 💕

What about some Ursula Le Guin, OP?

Vwswimmer1 · 09/01/2023 21:24

I really enjoyed power by Naomi Alderman and also the Wool series by Hugh Howey

OrionsAccessory · 09/01/2023 21:24

A boy and his dog at the end of the world by Charlie Fletcher

Vox by Christina Valcher

The Power by Naiomi Alderman

Sand by Hugh Howey is good too (but not as good as the wool trilogy)

kilos · 09/01/2023 21:24

Already been mentioned but
Moths
The End of Men
The Long Walk

I enjoyed them all

Topolectic · 09/01/2023 21:23

The Stepford Wives

The three body problem by Cixin Liu - more sci but a strong flavour of dystopia.

QuietlyLurkingintheCorner · 09/01/2023 21:21

I've just finished The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. Have a cup of tea & some good biscuits by your side though, I cried continuously through the last 15 pages!

Also seconding Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro.

The Children of Men

Day of the Triffids

JG Farrell's "Troubles" (a sort of weird micro-dystopia)

Lightningfast · 09/01/2023 21:20

The Collector by John Fowles
