A shiny new thread for 2023. There didn't appear to be one do hope it's ok that I have created it this year.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

And now I'm re-reading my Pratchett series.

89 Equal Rites
90 Mort.
Just started 91 - Reaper Man.

32: Behind The Scenes at The Museum by Kate Atkinson loved this apart from the fact that there were SO many characters, I could have done with a family tree to keep track of the extended family.

  1. Old Baggage by Lissa Evans

Took me a while to get into this one. Thought it started off slow but did improve as it went on. A decent read overall. 3 out of 5.

@BaconAndAvocado .Yes. LOVED it. Preferred the Marian narrative to the Hadley for the most part but adored it and the way it wove together.

Yes, I agree re the 2 narratives but loving it overall.
Have you read any of her other books?
She's new to me.

Wildernesstips · 16/08/2023 07:18

15: This Thing of Darkness by Harry Thompson
I did enjoy it but it feels like it has taken me about two months to read this one. It charts the life of Robert Fitzroy and Charles Darwin on the Beagle, which I did find really interesting as it is mostly historically accurate.

50 Dead Head by C J Skuse

14. Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead I’ve only read a small chunk of this but am LOVING it already!

NO SPOILERS......has anyone else read and enjoyed this book?

SlightlyJaded · 15/08/2023 09:41

14. 'Billy Summers' by Stephen King

Loved this. Once again SK proves he is so much more than a horror writer. Not a scrap of supernatural, just a completely compelling character playing out his 'last job'.

Yuja · 13/08/2023 16:53

14 - Hag-Seed, Margaret Atwood

I have not even got the words to describe how much I loved this. Read the whole thing this weekend. I mean, I love Margaret Atwood and The Tempest so it's not that surprising, but still - it blew me away.

Book 20 The Hangman's Song by James Oswald

GalileoHumpkins · 11/08/2023 12:36

48 Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone
49 Children of Paradise by Camilla Grudova

Iamblossom · 09/08/2023 07:57
  1. The man who died twice, Richard Osman Loved it, just a great story, love all the characters. Infinitely prefer his sanitised version of what it is like to live with someone suffering with dementia, very different from my experience.

Have bought the third one to read on my hols.

GalileoHumpkins · 06/08/2023 19:03

45 Boy Parts by Eliza Clark
46 In Bloom by C J Skuse
47 The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw

thefinaltwist · 03/08/2023 16:36

Book 19 The Bloody, Bloody Banks by Andrew Raymond

Yuja · 02/08/2023 21:41

Finally got round to reading book 13 - Circe by Madeleine Miller
I absolutely loved this, beautiful writing and a unique and imaginative story.

  1. Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

Not a big fan of this one. Even thought about giving up on it with about 100 pages to go. I persisted but just wanted to get to the end.
2.5 out of 5.

I haven't been a fan of any of the Sally Rooney bo looks either. I just don't think they live up to the hype at all.

I must update my list. I've a few to add as my last update didn't post.....

12 Paris for one JoJo Moyes

Lost my reading flow but slowly trying to get it back.

drspouse · 01/08/2023 03:01

I gave up on Normal People on TV. A bit Emperor's New Clothes I thought.

I'm going to count audio books which I don't usually:
18 A Trip of One's Own by Kate Wills on audio - relaxing and a bit unusual, female solo travellers through the ages, some of which I would love to know more about!
19 Cultish by Amanda Montell - about how exclusive language lets cults take hold - a very wide definition of cults too, including MLM and social media gurus as well as the Jonestowns of this world. Interesting and disturbing and also very relevant to the sex/gender debate.
