A shiny new thread for 2023. There didn't appear to be one do hope it's ok that I have created it this year.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

Book 11 = Whispers Underground by Ben Aaronovitch
I am really enjoying this series although this story seemed a bit far fetched even for magical policing 😅

drspouse · 10/05/2023 20:11

Well done you!

In general we’ve been doing a clear out in our house for years and that’s included books .
my parents have hundreds if not more I grew up surrounded by them I just don’t want them everywhere after I’ve read them although we probably do still have them in every room of our house except bathrooms

Nordicmom · 10/05/2023 17:29

Hah ok , I should have put it in another way . I have had a drawer of books to read in my bedroom for years I’ve now read all , I do have some on my kindle left I’m not so enthusiastic about so might just delete them . There’s a few of DH on kindle in the library I could read too . In our downstairs bookcase there are only a few books to do with me we’ve been given as gifts but otherwise none of my books anymore just kids and DH ones that might have some as does DS I can read like the Stephen King I now started . I have actually read all MY physical books and decluttered the ones no one else here wants to read since I will not read them again . I’m not at all attached to physical books although I like to read them and not just on kindle . I haven’t been buying lots of new ones since I was on a mission of reading the ones I already had for the last few years .

I’ve finished my books to read
Sorry, does not compute. You have no books in the house or on Kindle that you haven't read? Are you even a bookworm??

Nordicmom · 10/05/2023 13:56

Since I’ve finished my books to read I have started on one I’ve bought for DS
13.If it bleeds -Stephen King

drspouse · 10/05/2023 09:56

3 books last month:
8 - The Bullet that Missed, Richard Osman - I like this series, it's fun and escapist. I got the first one for my dad for his birthday.
9 - Anger Management for Parents, Vivian Foster. A bit trite and tends to assume you are angry at things going on outside your family and taking it out on your kids (mine is the opposite with a child with SEN and extreme aggression).
10 - How not to murder your ADHD kid, Sarah Templeton. Reasonably helpful, also a very quick read!

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/05/2023 07:50

4 Digging to America by Ann Tyler

5 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

6 The Woman in the White Kimono whilst the story was interesting, I couldn't really warm to any of the characters.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/05/2023 07:45

@Pourmeanotherwine if you loved Song of Achilles I can recommend Circe.

EspeciallyDetermined · 08/05/2023 22:45

19: How to kill Men and get away with It - Katy Brent. - lightweight, ludicrous plotlines but somehow gripping. Trigger warning for violent death though.

GalileoHumpkins · 08/05/2023 13:02

22 Never Lie by Freida McFadden.

Breathmiller · 08/05/2023 06:07
  1. The Dutch House - Ann Patchett.
Nordicmom · 08/05/2023 03:47

I ended up not reading the present book just leafing through it a bit before donating so not counting it . Instead I finished another one on my kindle .
12.Knee deep in life -Laura Belbin I found that it was another book that’s not really relevant to me at my life stage any more now that my kids are older and kind of just more of the same I’ve read many times before about motherhood .
Not sure what I’ll read next possibly will finish more books on my kindle .

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/05/2023 22:48

53 The Host. Written by Stephanie Meyer, and much better than the Twilight books. They very much remind me of I Shall Fear No Evil, a classic Robert Heinlein, but without all the 60s hippy vibes. :)

GalileoHumpkins · 06/05/2023 17:07

21 Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert.

Nordicmom · 06/05/2023 16:42

I gave up on
11.Project Hail Mary after 100 pages, I got bored and it was over 400 pages long so it’ll going to charity shop .
I have another book ,a present ,in my drawer I think I’ll just leaf through since it’s a self help one and I don’t really care for them after reading plenty in the past . Then I’ve read all of my books except on kindle so I’ll see what next. I’m not sentimental about books so I don’t keep this kind of books generally .

I love the Jackson Brodie books. Hoping KA will write some more!

EspeciallyDetermined · 04/05/2023 22:53

It refers back a bit to the first one, but no need to have read it really.

MargotMoon · 04/05/2023 22:39

Glad to see two recent good reviews of One Good Turn on here, having just started it!

I had to read the synopsis of the first one before I started because I could hardly remember a thing about it, but guessing it's a standalone story so not that important?

EspeciallyDetermined · 04/05/2023 22:10

18: One Good Turn (Jackson Brodie 2) - Kate Atkinson. Better than the first book, the various strands of the story are woven together better, great listen.

Iamblossom · 04/05/2023 21:31
  1. The Unheard, Nikki French
I thought this was good, easy to read, but the ending was a bit confusing, I keep thinking about it and wondering if I need to be a bit cleverer to work it out!
  1. Away with the Penguins, Hazel Prior Loved this, beautifully written, lovely story.
EspeciallyDetermined · 03/05/2023 16:15

17: The Gift of A Radio by Justin Webb - too long, the first third or so (his early life) was really interesting, but the section about his school days was far too long and the end seemed rushed.

Nordicmom · 03/05/2023 14:08

Another book finished on my Kindle that was half read for years;
12.All Joy and no fun ,The paradox of modern parenthood -Jennifer Senior
which rings very true at the moment

I’ll be working through books on my kindle at the same time as reading physical ones from now on I think …

Wildernesstips · 02/05/2023 20:30

9. Finding Hildasay by Christian Lewis
About a guy and his dog walking the entire coastline of Britain. Really fascinating story (I love non-fiction walking books), but not the best written.

10. Forgive Me by Susan Lewis
Quite an interesting story centring around restorative justice, but I felt that none of the characters were very relatable to me.

Wildernesstips · 02/05/2023 20:25

@Yuja State of Wonder was the first Ann Patchett I read and was also really pleased to have discovered her.

@Scout2016 The Bees has such an unusual viewpoint. I was sceptical at first but ended up loving it.
