I think the birth of Ilsa's baby is going to prompt either radically different or radically similar feelings in Robin and Strike.

Either push them together or further away.

Nothing like hedging my bets!

ReneBumsWombats · 22/09/2022 12:37

I can't think where else there is for Madeline to go, to be honest. Strike clearly never wants to see her again and he never has any trouble finding beautiful, well-off women to date.

the80sweregreat · 22/09/2022 12:33

I hope that's the last we hear of Madeline and she isn't pregnant.
I didn't hate her character, she obviously wasn't a complete snob and a hard worker , but she wasn't right for Strike at all. We know that Robin is, but it's going to be ages before we see any of this. Plus Madeline was rude to a waitress as well , never ever a good sign ( however stressed or overworked you may be!)

babyjellyfish · 22/09/2022 10:45

Oh yes of course! I forgot about that.

mrstea301 · 22/09/2022 10:42

Ilsa is pregnant! But was keeping it quiet as she was worried about losing the baby.

babyjellyfish · 22/09/2022 09:36

Who else is pregnant? I've lost track.

curcurbita · 22/09/2022 08:37

I (mostly) loved it though agree it suffers from the JKR problem of being overly long and definitely could have been trimmed down. Did feel like I needed to take notes a bit at times especially working out who all the moderators were, and I also didn't like that we learned very little about Gus, despite the length - would especially have liked the connection between Gus and Vikas to have been found out somehow during the process (I don't think I missed that?). However it kept me interested all the way through which is what I'm really looking for in a book.

Re the Madeline pregnancy theory - I'd not thought of that though I see why people say it. Though if that was in the next book wouldn't there then be two pregnancies which might be a bit much?

fruitstick · 21/09/2022 07:45

Dammit!

Maybe she's trying to draw parallels between female creatives (Edie) and the banal nonsense of chat rooms.

Are they all buried in Highgate cemetery?

That’s a really good thought but no, just googled. Christina Rossetti is but Mew’s in Hampstead & Browning’s in Florence.

TheMadGardener · 20/09/2022 21:55

I used to live in Walthamstow, so got very excited when Robin moved to Blackhorse Road!

I finished on audible this morning. Absolutely brilliant.

What do people think of the poetry at the start of each chapter- Rossetti, Mew, Browning etc? I wondered about what these choices could signify?

I just assumed that because most of the book was about a bunch of horrible misogynists who harass women online & are contemptuous towards them, JKR decided to point a contrast by having all the chapter quotes be by intelligent women writers/poets.

the80sweregreat · 20/09/2022 14:03

Prudence sounded nice in TB and has had a similar relationship with Johnny Rokeby that Strike had ( didn't see him at all !)
Maybe being an alternative therapist might help him heal. I'm sure she will suggest it ( if they ever meet up !)
It might be a good thing although I'm sure Lucy won't approve and might feel left out ( having a different dad experience to those two won't help matters either ) she might become a bit jealous maybe ?

StartupRepair · 20/09/2022 13:00

I think strikes' sister Prudence may make him confront some hard truths.

IDontDrinkTea · 20/09/2022 09:05

My prediction for a future book. Matthew emotionally checks out of his marriage to Sarah and Sarah tries to hire the agency to see if he’s cheating. He definitely shouldn’t be allowed to just disappear as a character, he needs to be unhappy somewhere 😂

ImNotAnomie · 18/09/2022 18:35

I think Morehouse said that to strengthen Anomie's anonymity - he (MH) knew who Anomie was and by calling him his 'sister' it threw guessers off the scent? I think?!

Ah ok the sister thing was a red herring

ReneBumsWombats · 18/09/2022 22:37

MrsJagoRoss · 18/09/2022 21:44

This is possibly unkind of me, but... even if Morehouse had no disability was it not a bit delusional to think someone as beautiful as the real-life Paperwhite (sorry forgotten her name) with a busy offline life would really spend so much time as a moderator in an online, niche game and want to meet someone that way. Tbh I include all the male moderators in that, did they really believe that was her? To me it suggested that a lot of males have a level of delusion about who is interested in them, even if they then don’t take it to extremes like Gus. I appreciate that may be unfair.

I think that sense of delusion and what draws people to it might have been part of the theme...although Morehouse obviously didn't think the fictitious Paperwhite would be interested in him if she knew the extent of his disability.

I thought the book was very good at showing the reasons people bury themselves in online worlds. Some people, like Gus, have a reason to be unhappy and you could feel sorry for them, but they put themselves so, so much in the wrong with what they do (even if Gus hadn't murdered anyone, he was a bully, a stalker and a harasser and abused the power he had within the circle). Others, like Morehouse, are just so very vulnerable and don't do anything wrong.

And also, having embedded yourself in that world, the power it then has over you. So some anonymous Internet person can talk at you like Jonny Big Bollocks and order you to stay up all night even when you have work the next day And you're so invested in this world that you aren't able to tell them to fuck off and log off, even though in theory that's all you have to do...the power is entirely self-perpetuated but that doesn't mean it's not there.

And of course, sometimes these people, as pathetic as they are, are also very dangerous in reality.

Bugger, half my post didn't post. Basic summary - next book I think Strike will be pining after Robin while she's in a relationship with the police blokey, and Strike hopefully getting healthier and, finally being properly over Charlotte, trying to become a better version of himself for Robin. Robin will get the confidence and experience with men other that Matthew that she needs to feel on equal terms with Strike romantically. They'll find themselves in a situation that forces them to admit they love each other.

And hopefully at some point they'll have completely amazing sex. Grin

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/09/2022 19:03

Finished it last night. Loved it. Didn't get it though! Thought Anomie was maybe Inigo and Kea combined.

The Morehouse storyline was really unexpectedly sad, that level of manipulation and deceit. I hope Gus didn't tell him what had happened and that Paperwhite had been fake all along, that would be so cruel. Expect he did though.

CassandraBarrett · 18/09/2022 14:38

I don't understand the "Anomie is like my sister" either...
Did Moorehouse's sister have something in common with Anomie?

I've just started listening to Cuckoo's Calling on Audible and I'm going to work my way through them all again so it'll take me a while to get back around and re-read/re-listen

He might be over Charlotte completely now. Something broke when he saw she didn't prioritise or protect her children.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 17/09/2022 20:52

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2022 17:50

He has commitment phobia.
Charlotte has ruined him on that front.

I can see exactly why Robin’s being cautious, given his track record.

ImNotAnomie · 17/09/2022 13:57

Why did Gus tell Strike and Robin about Rachel (when they were in Whitstable)?

Yeah I wondered this too…
