Try the series of books by Donato Carrisi. I mention them as (mostly) a series because you don't want to read the series out of order. They are the scariest, deepest thrillers I have ever read. I totally can't put them down.

I’m partway through a Belinda Bauer. The facts of life and death. It’s gripping and brilliant so far.

Anything by Alex Marwood

Second the suggestion of The Huntress by Kate Quinn. It’s really good and very gripping.

Sorry, I meant Mark Billingham, not Bellingham.

The Burning Air by Erin Kelly. The twist is incredible!

I love all her books. After the fall has a great twist too.

I’m currently reading Playing Nice by JP Delaney and it’s great so far (I’m about 3/4 of way through).

Also, if you like police detective-murdery-type-things, Mark Bellingham is always an excellent read.

wingliner · 10/07/2022 15:25

@DogsAndGin it's a great read isn't it???

LlamaGiles · 10/07/2022 08:43

The Dry by Jane Harper is fantastic.

Rubbernecker by Belinda Bauer. A bit different and extremely good.

Agree re: Dark Matter - also Thin Air by Michelle Paver, which is exceptional.

The Mermaids Singing by Val McDermid.

The Simon Serrailer series by Susan Hill.

The Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith.

I like the ones by Jean Christophe Grangé, many are available in English and look at things from the darker side of life - the one about negative near death expériences had me reading until 3am to find a safe place to stop.

What was the name of the book about near death experiences?

Night Heron by Adam Brookes and sequels Spy Games and The Spy's Daughter- as good as I am Pilgrim in my view. Also Garden of Beasts Jeffrey Deaver and Down River John Hart

Three Hours - Rosemary Lupton
The Cult - Abby Davies
Heatwave - Kare Riodan

I've read three hours and heatwave.
Really liked heatwave, thought three hours was ok!

@NeedToKnow101
I read that book when it was first released and it’s one of my favourites so many twist and turns but then bits of human stuff as well I sat up all night till 5am and read it it one go

I think the writer wrote or directed one of the mad max films or something 😂

I might actually start reading it again

FancyFelix · 09/07/2022 16:38

American dirt - Jeanine Cummins

Spanielsarepainless · 09/07/2022 16:38

The Huntress by Kate Quinn. I was sceptical when a neighbour passed it over, but I couldn't put it down, neither could DH, two friends, Dad and sister.

KarrotKake · 09/07/2022 16:36

James Sumner has a series based on a character called Adrian Hell, which I love. The first is True Conviction. He is one of the few authors I actively buy rather than wait for them to be super cheep or free on a kindle.

NeedToKnow101 · 09/07/2022 16:35

I found I am Pilgrim extremely gripping.
