But I love her writing. I think she writes fab, escapist, funny novels. What's the general consensus here?

I think she's fab for light reading and holiday reading. I also loved Rachel's Holiday, but Watermelon drove me mad because her baby never cried!

TillyScoutsmum · 14/01/2008 09:41

Great escapist holiday reading... Love it. Rachel's Holiday was brilliant

Also met her at a book reading night and she made me cry when she spoke about her alcoholism and not being able to have kids. She and her dh both seemed lovely

Cappuccino · 14/01/2008 09:34

I have heard her on the radio and she is very intelligent

if she is good at what she does I can't see any problem

if you're going to read chick lit it might as well be decent

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 14/01/2008 09:31

I love her books. Rachels Holiday has to be my favourite. It was the first book of hers I read and I laughed out loud.

You need to take it for what it is. If I fancy a thriller, I read a thriller. If I want a piece of easy reading fun, I read Marian.

I like them. Earlier one's better I think. I agree about Cecelia Ahern but I did enjoy the book she wrote about the imaginary friend.. I need one of those

LazyLinePainterJane · 14/01/2008 08:27

But all that matters is that you like it.

southeastastra · 13/01/2008 23:06

i've never read her books but will do.

she seems a nice enough person and funny

Ags · 13/01/2008 23:05

I love her books but find her really irritating. I am Irish but her accent really irritates me with all her 'Ah sure, now, it was great so it was'. I almost expect her to say 'Top of the morning'!

Having said that her books rate among the top chick lit books I have ever read. I think she gives great depth to her characters and her books are funny and touching.

Top light holiday choices. I hate trying to defend my choices to people and I would advise you not to even try. I recommended one of her books to my sister-in-law and really raved about it. But my sister-in-law hated it and didn't even get past the first couple of chapters. She didn't think it was bad but it was not her bag. Each to their own!

lilolilmanchester · 13/01/2008 22:14

Go, look at it like this: busy Mums need great stories, told simply, to wind down to at the end of the day/ read on hols whilst keeping half an eye on the kids. I like more stimulating literature too, but my lifestyle doesn't always allow me to get into it. Read what you like, stretch yourself occasionally, and ignore the literary snobs. Life's too short for any other approach.

VictorianSqualor · 13/01/2008 22:09

I doubt she would say she was a 'serious novelist' as such, she writes light-hearted chick-lit and though I normally read things that make me think or crime thrillers I do feel somewhat bogged down by those kind of books sometimes, almost enough to make me not want to read, so I read something like Marian Keyes and it's nice and light.

FrannyandZooey · 13/01/2008 22:06

yes I like them for what they are, something light - I think she has a good understanding of people and also a lot of warmth comes across

think most people look down on them though

who cares?

mrspnut · 13/01/2008 22:04

I like her novels and like someone else said you can't read the the heavy stuff all the time.

I veer between the Booker shortlist, crime novels and frothy chicklit and I like them all.

It's rare for me to find a book I don't like, some are harder going than others but I usually finish them all.

lilolilmanchester · 13/01/2008 22:04

Go, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, as long as you enjoy what you read. It all depends on what YOU want out of reading. Personally, I enjoy MK and similar lighter stuff, but also read classics and more difficult contemporary literature. Just be honest with yourself & confident about what you want out of reading, then stuff the rest of them IMO. (tho don't close your ears to the possibilty of being introduced to new authors, who you may/may not hate)

onepieceoflollipop · 13/01/2008 22:00

I admit to liking her books too. In her book of short stories "Under the Duvet" she writes about her fight against alcohol and also mentions the fact that she and her dh were sadly unable to have children.

I saw her on TV once it was on "Loose Women" her accent was stronger than I imagined, I kind of forgot she is from Ireland!

tripe

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/01/2008 21:54

I normally read crime fiction, but if I want something lighter then I like her. Have read 3 or 4 of hers I think. She's quite funny in RL too (well, on TV).

Nightynight · 13/01/2008 21:53

change your friends and stick with MK

Rachels Holiday is one of my favourite books.

sandyballs · 13/01/2008 21:53

Rachel's Holiday was brilliant. She is an ex-alcoholic apparently. Marian Keyes, that is.

cornsilk · 13/01/2008 21:51

I like her. Watermelon and Lucy Sullivan my faves.

sandyballs · 13/01/2008 21:50

Oh I love Marian Keyes. Her books are very funny and I love all the mad Irish families, coming from a mad Irish family myself

lulumama · 13/01/2008 21:49

I have just re read Last Chance Saloon and Sushi for beginners, sadly, i lent someone Rachel's Holiday and Lucy Sullivan gets married, and never got them back.. i feel a visit to the library coming on

binkleandflip · 13/01/2008 21:46

I think she does great imagery - I can almost picture myself sat at her mammy's table having a cup of tea and a scone then rushing for the last bus to the city (Dublin) Lovely!

Go · 13/01/2008 21:46

same here. it's not like you watch nothing but news and heavy political drama on telly is it? You need a bit of "light entertainment" too. Good balance in all things I say. Am studying English degree so like to take a break from Dickens et al from time to time. Don't think you can consider yourself "well-read" unless you read all sorts, not just the classics.
