How many books do you read in a year?

Posey · 05/01/2008 22:14

Roughly. I know it varies and depends on how thick they are etc...

I keep a list of what I've read (anal maybe, but I like it) and realise that I'm reading fewer books these days (although I always have something on the go).

So, to answer my own question, I read 20 - 25 books a year.

Read around 120 a year now, used to be about 5 a week before I had DD and when I was commuting daily. I too miss the breastfeeding days, used to be able to read just so much then

When we bought our first house and upgraded from our book-filled flat, we had a carpenter put shelving all around one room. It was so lovely! I miss it so much...we are downsizing at the moment, so I have sold lots of books and donated about 11 enormous boxes full too. More to go I think!

And now I'm not working I go to the library twice weekly and borrow yet more books. I like the fact you can order in whatever book you like - just brilliant!

RustyBear · 07/01/2008 20:41

Far fewer than I did two years ago (joined MN Feb 2006)

IdrisTheDragon · 07/01/2008 20:40

I read at least 3 or 4 books a week, so at least 150-200 a year. A list would be a good idea - will try that one .

DH is always amazed how quickly I read - I am very much a skim reader whereas he takes much longer.

Do other people have a few books on the go at once? I have different books in different parts of the house so there's always something there .

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 20:35

well I think I am gonna have to go buy a pretty notbook tommorrow ready for starting a list.

I manage by being a fast reader, reading every spare moment to the point of watching TV while reading, and I also have at least half hour everyday while waiting outside school for the school run, cos if you don't get there early you don't gt parked at all.....altho at the reading time.

I read while mr psycho is re-fueling th car even........ignoring the kiddies of course!

also read on the loo, while cooking, while cuddling a poorly child in the middl of the night if they dopey enough, but too poorly for me to sleep IYGWIM.

I do so miss those early days breastfeding tho.....read tons then.

oooh....plus, there is a lot of times that I am in hospital with various kiddies (or even me), and of course it can be very boring, especially when said child is asleep and the TV has gone off!

wheelybug · 07/01/2008 19:47

Probably 50 or so since dd - would have been a lot more before. I buy most and have turned a spare room into a 'library' (its the smallest bedroom in the house so not too grand ).

Think I will start writing them down this year - sounds a good idea.

janeite · 07/01/2008 19:38

Yes, like Silentterror I find time to read by hardly ever watching television. The only TV I watch really is books related (eg the new "Sense And Sensibility" and "Ballet Shoes" are the only things I've watched throughout the whole of December and January so far) - and then I usually just end up complaining because they're not like the books! I also have a long bath every night with a book - that is my "me time" - if I haven't got anything to read for bath time I am foul-tempered and so will read anything in order to avoid this - have been known to lie in a bath for an hour and read 2 Famous Five books!!!!

Janeite shuffles off realising that she has just really lowered the tone.

MuffinMclay · 07/01/2008 19:18

About one a week now. 3-4 a week before ds.

Mercy · 07/01/2008 19:13

About 4 a year

Used to be one or 2 per week pre-children. Never been a highbrow type reader though.

Will now read what you lot manage (and how)

SilentTerror · 07/01/2008 19:08

I am very similar to you Psych mum!
Usually read 2 a week,sometimes 3 or4 if I can't put them down!
Have bookcases overspilling everywhere too.
I buy any that I know I will love,ie by known authors, usually from Amazon.
I love the Amazon marketplace for second hand, and Abe books.#I also frequent charity shops and second hand bookshops, particularly on holiday!
I also go to the library once a fortnight and take a good stack out.
How do I find time??
Very little television!

Twinkie1 · 07/01/2008 17:44

I can read your average paperback in a day - scan read though - don't read much descriptive text - just the bones of the story - when they start warbling about green trees I switch off - I know trees are green I just don't care and want to know what happens next.

Really pisses DH off that I read so fast - he reads so slowly it drives me mad - impossible to read over his shoulder without getting cross!

And I never ever reread a book - I would get a few pages through and realise I had read it and that would be that!

DingALongCow · 07/01/2008 17:39

Psycho, I finance my Amazon orders by writing reviews and doing surveys, I made £300 last year, so it doesnt cost DH anything (he might me less supportive if it did!).

LoveAngel · 07/01/2008 16:55

Since DS was born 3 years ago maybe 20 a year. It was more like 100 a year before.

at the library.

and another at the amazon orders and the time for yourself.

in fact, may have to hint lots to mr psycho for when/if we get to have the downstairs extended. we are planning an ADULTS ONLY lounge....may have to make it an adults lounge/library...(or maybe just MY lounge/library[mwhahahaaha])

DingALongCow · 07/01/2008 16:48

I average about 2 a week so 100 - 120 a year?

I usually have several on the go at once in different rooms etc but if I dont have any to hand I will read anything that is lying around, magazines, adverts, bills, labels on packets and bottles, even some godawful book I found in desperation in a cupboard at PIL's house (who dont read ).

I persuaded DH to turn the master bedroom into a library so I have a comfortable sofa, 10 bookcases and some toys for my daughter in there. DH not a big reader but very understanding, he knows when my amazon orders etc arrive he isnt to disturb me.

I recently joined bookmooch in an attempt to get rid of some of the books I will never ever read. I have sent out 6....and got 7 in return .

Good to see I am not alone!

It varies, as someone said earlier, depending on LIFE getting in the way! Read a lot more when ds was small as he was a poor sleeper and I read whilst trying to get him to sleep. When dd came along, no chance!

I keep lists, though I only rate the best book of the year, right at the end. Last year was 30 books.

It's fun looking back and remembering what you read on what holiday etc.

Wish I had lists going back to my teenage years though. I read almost the entire contents of our small local libary and some really stick with me but I can't remember the authors!

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 16:28

got to add that he is not doing it to be nice......

he has a day off tomorrow, and has booked to play golf......told me that the house will finally look 'normal' again tho as at least the children go back tomorrow and he will leave me in peace too and not annoy me by demanding my attention.......he said it like he was doind me a favour......

oooh nooooo replied me.......you wanna play golf, you give me money to go do my thing to (waterstones)......he clearly felt I had a point (not that I was tantruming or anything.....I would never do that).

house work can wait, tis not like we gonna all drop dead just cos of a shed load little amount of dust is it??.

soooooo......please do not think him all wonderful (he can be, not this time tho), this is bribery time.....

littlerach · 07/01/2008 16:25

probably about 80 - 100 in a year.

The idea of a list is very good, i iwll start that.

I do have a liost of books that i want to read, but I odn't a;lways carry it around. My friend and I used to alwasy carry the Times top 100 books list to buy from.

DH despairs of my books, as we have lots.
But I do rread them frequently.

Dd1 has my book habit too, and reads all of the time.

ReadItSwapIt is fab for swapping.

Blandmum · 07/01/2008 16:14

I would say around 100 or so.

I do re-read books, so I don't buy 100!

Dh reads about as many, and dd is catching up!

sophiewd · 07/01/2008 16:11

Probably 100+, will usualyy make one trip a month to local Watrestones and spend shed loads on books, will buy for DH so he doesn't mutter too much but lucky you Psycho for haveing such a nice Mr Psycho. Otherwise do a book club in RL and do the MN one and just joined a circle on MN so AMazon helps a bit. Like some others very early reader and have to take a book everywhere with me.

Squirdle · 07/01/2008 15:06

Psycho, yes I am who you think I am Fab for the driving news! And yes we need to catch up very soon. A and C been back since Thursday and D goes back tomorrow....3 mornings to myself now..hoorah!

My waterstones doesn't have a coffee shop...at least I don't think it has. We have 2 waterstones...strange for a small town like ours...or I should say city! We have 2 superdrugs too, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with this

Right best stop yabbering, school run to do and if I don't get a move on it will be a school run!

Sciolist · 07/01/2008 12:45

Like Posey and MumJoanne, I have kept a list since 1981 (but not rated them after the first year). I got through 66 that year, but subsequently 40-45 most years. I include GRANTA as a book, but not Slightly Foxed (both quarterly publications).

Keeping a list has the unfortunate effect of putting me off long books (as my annual total would suffer), even though it does not matter a damn! My other excuse is that long books are too heavy for the underground.

psychomum5 · 06/01/2008 22:29

am doing a little dance......

mr psycho just handed me money for a book and coffee, so on tuesday 9first day back at school) I can go to waterstones, buy a new book, and sit in the coffee shop and read to my hearts content (or till they kick me out/school run time, which ever is earliest)....

tis my 'thing', and one not done for a while cos of the car accident and my lack of driving ability. am driving again now tho, so.......woooooohoooooo

BOOKS HERE I COME

fishie · 06/01/2008 22:24

hmm about 40 i think. used to be 100+ pc but i am more discerning and have less time now. also i pick longer ones.
i only buy cookery books or second hand, although ahve a lovely friend who works for a publisher so i often get proofs.

i do love second hand bookshops and am going to a couple for my birthday next week as am usually not allowed (mumeeeeeeeee sob wail + dh are you going to be MUCH LONGER?)

have you all discovered online library catalogues? mine has linked up with about 7 other london boroughs and i can order them free.
