I am torn between Fanny Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility and Mrs Elton from Emma.

Also, while we are idling away a gloomy Monday, which Austen character do you most want to live with. I want to be adopted by the Musgroves.

Sorry, that's in respect of Frank Churchill.

NewYearSue · 05/01/2022 17:13

He plays with everyone but in particular the young woman he is secretly engaged to.

Ozanj · 05/01/2022 17:10

Darcy Grin

I read Emma young and naïve enough to be astonished that the father-figure neighbour suddenly proposed marriage and was accepted. I need a reread. Why was Frank a baddie?

NewYearSue · 05/01/2022 16:37

I like Mr John Knightley.
I really think Frank Churchill is a good baddie. Because he is very plausibly considered a good guy but isn't at all.

I would live a life of fun and frolicks with Lydia (and possibly Wickham).

Having said that Wentworth is my favourite and if he loved me like he loved Anne, then, you know ...

StColumbofNavron · 05/01/2022 16:26

Henry Crawford - I would definitely have married him.

I like all the cads really - don't mind Wickham, quite like Willoughby.

Part of the establishment yes, but I’ve always felt that the job description was a licensed pirate

A privateer was a licensed pirate. Royal Navy officers had to put up with doing the boring bits, such as months of blockade duty, when there was little chance of any prize money, but which could actually do more to win the war than winning a naval battle.

Have you read Joan Aiken’s sequel Mansfield Revisited?

I knew someone had written a Susan-Tom romance, but couldn't think who. I've read most of her stuff - and her sister's - but don't think I've read that.

I love Charles Musgrove

Poor Charles. Not terribly bright, but good natured, an affectionate son, brother and father, and is stuck with the awful Mary, whom he puts up with remarkably well.

I once read critique of Persuasion which pointed out that although Anne is initially presented as such a poor thing, she is pursued by virtually every male character in the book - which is quite true, even the married ones are fond of her in a fatherly or brotherly way. The only man who doesn't appreciate her is her own father.

florentina1 · 04/01/2022 21:41

My Hero is Lydia Bennett. She doe not give a stuff about anyone. I think she will lead Wickham a fair old dance.

Persuasion is my favourite, but I think Wentworth should haven come back for Anne when he made his fortune.

Mansfield Park and Northanger are full of wets,

I also like John Knightly for his Sardonic humour.

Lets talk about Heroes ..

Who do you think is the best?

Colonel Brandon? (but I am sadly biased here because of Alan Rickman)
Wentworth? (ditto because of Ciaran Hinds)

Laska2Meryls · 04/01/2022 20:15

be not bee (duh)

Laska2Meryls · 04/01/2022 20:13

I love Captain and Mrs Harville also .. but like the Crofts , I expect they'd also bee off in a Man of War pronto at the first sign of trouble and expect you to thrive on ships biscuit..

What do we think of James Benwick? Lost Soul? orFar too Easily Consolable (as JA seems to think )

Deadringer · 04/01/2022 20:04

I love Charles Musgrove, i always think that Austen must have modelled him on one of her brothers. When he is waffling on about the gun he is going to look at, his character just leaps off the page to me.

florentina1 · 04/01/2022 19:58

Charlotte Lucas is one of my favourites. She really makes the best she can of her life. I have read a couple of ‘Austen , what happened next’ type books. Terri Fleming and Elizabeth Aston. They are not brilliant but one about the daughters of the Collins is ok.

Daft me, Florentina.. Sir William Lucas, I meant...
...muddling him up with other Henrys

florentina1 · 04/01/2022 16:45

@Laska2Meryls

Mrs Elton though was really well written.. .and ww mustn't forget Elizabeth Eliot .I think JA must have known of some dreadful characters to imagine her villains.

I just love the way she portrays her contemporary society and its foibles

One of her best characters has to be Mr Collins.. Oh, and Henry Lucas .. both so deliciously funny..

Who s Henry Lucas.?t. Thename escapes me.

Part of the establishment yes, but I’ve always felt that the job description was a licensed pirate, he seemed to be on a commission for how much loot he brought home.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 04/01/2022 16:03

The Eltons for me. But then Emma is in every respect my favourite Austen.

I love the tender descriptions of Mr Woodhouse's annoying foibles, and my thought processes always go...

Aw, the poor old sod would be dead by now.
Aw, sprightly young Emma would be dead at least 100 year by now.
Aw SHIT, none of them ever existed.Grin

PerkingFaintly · 04/01/2022 15:59

That is, some prize ships were sold; others were given a swift change of name to become ships of the Royal Navy.

PerkingFaintly · 04/01/2022 15:57

No, not at all. He's a captain in the Royal Navy.

Prize money was awarded to Royal Naval crews as incentive to capture enemy ships and bring them in, whereupon the Admiralty sold them.

It's a tradition extending at least until WWI (I've seen it on naval personnel records), and I think more recently.

DoubleDeckersAreNotHeroes · 04/01/2022 15:54

Wentworth. He’s essentially a pirate isn’t he?

Annaghgloor · 04/01/2022 11:19

@AmazingBouncingFerret

It’s a shame those items of clothing spell Lizzy Bennett’s name incorrectly though!
She’s Lizzy Bennet…? How are they spelling it?

Some of those are lovely, but not so sure about the Jane Eyre quotation about preferring to be happy rather than dignified, given that its context is Jane running after the insufferable St John Rivers to make up with him, despite the fact that it’s him sulking when she refused to marry him, after the worst proposal (‘You’re plain but useful, and I promise I’d shag you solemnly in India, anyway’) in literary history.
