I need a Chalet School fix

Please help:

Where can I download a Chalet School book? I'm astonished that I cannot find any as ebook.

(When you're under the weather, nothing quite hits the spot like a bit of EBD escapism.)

How lovely Boffin. Would be lovely to hear of places you visit. I spent a lot of time as a Chalet School girl in my head in my younger years. I even remember having cold bracing baths for a while!

BoffinMum · 14/08/2022 16:34

I am currently on holiday in Achenkirchen and wondering about whether to do a pilgrimage to some of the spots mentioned (disguised) in the books. DH has offered to assist in this endeavour. Shall I do that and report back?

Quite tempted to write a piece of fan fiction myself, as the younger me felt that the Chalet School was the only place I would truly be happy, what with all that trilingualism, cake, and bracing walks. Older me would have liked an Anna to run the house while I sat back and bred courtesy of a sexy but comforting doctor husband person. As it is I’ve done that to a certain extent but without nearly enough in the way of pretty hats, crisply ironed sheets and home made Apfelstrudel IMVHO.

essexmummy321, thank you so much for the link!

essexmummy321 · 30/06/2022 23:17

There are quite a few chalet school books available for free online here archive.org/details/inlibrary?query=chalet+school

and fan fiction here www.annersley.co.uk/index.php

tedgran · 30/06/2022 15:44

Dorothy Fairlie Bruce wrote the Dimsie books.

BoattoBolivia · 30/06/2022 15:35

And ideally a hardback or a girls gone by copy as they are unabridged. There is a chalet schools sales and wants Facebook page.

saltwaterandsuncream · 30/06/2022 14:58

I'd start at the beginning, with the School at the Chalet!

galliton · 30/06/2022 14:57

Can anyone recommend a Chalet book to start with please that is good and that I can obtain from somewhere? Looking for some escapist happy reading as going through a tough time. I have never read Chalet school but I enjoyed that kind of book when I was young so a bit of nostalgia!

I loved Girls of the Hamlet Club and kept hoping the rest would improve, but they just got sillier! Completely agree about wanting to slap Joy.

LouisRenault · 29/05/2022 15:31

I got quite a few from here, also lots of Abbey Girls books.

Now they ARE loopy!

Hands up anyone who wants to slap Joy, and thinks the twins should have been drowned at birth.

I do like Girls of the Hamlet Club and The Abbey Girls, after that I think it's downhill all the way.

It'll be a while yet in the uk. Copyright is life+70yrs. EBD died in 1969.

She wrote quite a few non-Chalet books. I recommend The School By The River; I don't know how easy it is to get hold of by whatever means.

There are quite a few Angels Brazil books on Project Gutenberg. I don't think she's as good a writer as EBD, but the early ones are interesting from a social history point of view.

Dorita Fairlie Bruce was the fourth of the Big Four girls' authors of that era. I have no idea how easy it is to get hold of her books.

Oh I had no idea! I thought it was 100 years. Thanks for the info - very interesting.

Surely it's not too many years until the Chalet School enter into the public domain and we get it for free... Right? Grin

startrekjunkie · 24/05/2022 20:27

could I have the link you mentioned if it's no trouble please @FelicityBeedle ?

startrekjunkie · 23/05/2022 13:09

just found this thread. Fond memories of reading Chalet School when I was growing up. Think I have a lot of the Armada cut paperbacks from the 70s. I have seen a few of you mentioning a possible link for the ebooks? Would it be possible to gain access? Kindle is good for me cos I can make the text bigger

SeasideRock · 23/02/2022 18:17

I’ve just found this thread! I love the CS books… and they have been a solid lump of comfort for me at different times. I’m currently 300 miles away from the box of them in my Mums garage (long story) and am making do with an M and S four book compilation from the 80’s. So glad I’m not alone in re-reading them as an adult.
I’m be v grateful for the link if anyone is happy to share it?

Howyoualldoworkme · 20/02/2022 18:09

Mauve and Maurice? Don't put that on the baby names thread Grin

AlmostSpringclean · 20/02/2022 17:28

Found this thread after posting today dithering about whether to give away my Chalet School books. The thread has made me smile. I absolutely loved the Chalet School as a child and reread them many times years ago. This list amused me inside the front cover of one....

There are 2 excellent fan societies - Friends of the Chalet School and New Chalet Club. Both produce newsletters 3 or 4 times a year, very different styles so both are worth reading. Active Facebook pages too. Girls Gone By publish a few titles every year with limited print runs so they go out of print fairly quickly. They also publish fill-in titles which I'm trying to collect. I've loved the ones I've read - so much research and care goes into the backgrounds. Also recommend the Girls Gone By weekly newsletter. Although mainly because I like hearing what the author's cats have been up to....
Thanks for the recommendation to Faded PageGrin Looks great.

BoattoBolivia · 11/02/2022 06:59

Those of you buying physical books- there is a really good Facebook group called Chalet School sales and wants where people sell. The Girls gone by books are great as they often include a short story and publishing background for each book. You can often pick up copies of the paperbacks very cheaply because some of them were cut so much from the original hardbacks, they even left out whole chapters! There is a list of these cuts in the files section of the group. There is also s separate chalet school discussion group.

MrsHamlet · 11/02/2022 06:48

Well.... I've finally finished, having read nothing but chalet school since Christmas.
I feel a bit lost now.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/01/2022 14:21

Girls Gone By Publishers own the rights to the Chalet School and keep refusing to do ebooks. They claim their readership isn’t interested, despite numerous FB threads etc suggesting ebooks. Please email them at www.ggbp.co.uk/contact-us/ to prove that there is interest!

FelicityBeedle · 05/01/2022 14:09

That’s some dedicated reading @MrsHamlet! I’m going slow and just reading some favourites, Geisel is just about to run off to see the waterfalls!

MrsHamlet · 03/01/2022 18:28

I've read nothing but Chalet School this holiday. I don't want to go back to work - they're just about to move to the Platz abd I need to keep going!

Thank you :)
