I keep reading books recommended and they just don’t seem to pack the punch anymore...

Please can you give me your ultimate book, with the plot twist you never seen coming...

I may have read it but hopefully I haven’t and will gather a huge big library of exciting books to read Halo

The Ivy Tree by Mary Stewart. A bit dated, but a great story.

maggiethecat · 26/12/2020 17:16

I second We Need to Talk About Kevin

Ellmau · 25/12/2020 23:17

Golden Hill, by Francis Spufford

AngryPrincess · 25/12/2020 23:03

Fingersmith.

Ellmau · 24/12/2020 08:26

Dorothy Dunnett's House of Niccolo series - lots along the way and one really big one.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 22/12/2020 21:24

'Big Brother' by Lionel Shriver (very different to 'Kevin')

grey12 · 22/12/2020 09:33

I gasped out loud in public a couple of times while reading "1984". An oldie but a very goodie! Wink

Labobo · 21/12/2020 22:56

Ooh, I haven't read Affinity. I might read that next. I fancy a novel with a good twist in it for reading by the fire over Christmas.

Labobo · 21/12/2020 22:54

@YoureAllABunchOfBastards - did you work out who it was at the end of TLS then? I thought the ending was ambiguous.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 21/12/2020 21:58

Another Sarah Waters - The Little Stranger. Creeping horror as I realised...I can still feel it now.

Another vote for Fingersmith- and I have such a bad memory that I was surprised all over again on the second reading!

Firstimer703 · 21/12/2020 21:42

Just read 'Blood Orange'. Maxing plot twists! Thoroughly recommend.

BooFuckingHoo2 · 21/12/2020 21:32

The Good Samaritan - fantastic and little known book!

MaMaLa321 · 21/12/2020 15:35

I still remember reading the Fingersmith twist, it took my breath away.
Also in Lord of the Rings - where someone is fighting one of the bad guys who says 'no man can kill me'.....

NotImpossible · 21/12/2020 09:24

Fingersmith for me too.

I'm going to look for some of the others mentioned here.

Wigeon · 20/12/2020 21:04

Fingersmith

We need to talk about Kevin

Totally didn’t see either plot twist coming. Gripping books both of them.

Galliano · 20/12/2020 20:59

We need to talk about Kevin was completely unexpected for me too.

Also Affinity by Sarah Waters - quite disappointed her later books don’t have such spectacular twists.

cricketmum84 · 20/12/2020 20:48

@Labobo I read it on holiday. Got to the end and sat up in shock staring at all these normal people milling around as if I hadn't gone through full on trauma 😂 no I never saw it coming either.

Labobo · 20/12/2020 20:07

@cricketmum84 - agree on We Need To Talk About Kevin. I really didn't see that twixt coming at all (some people say it was obvious) I gasped in shock.

CarlottaValdez · 20/12/2020 08:34

It’s great! I’d seen the film before I read it and still thought it was fantastic.

Labobo · 20/12/2020 07:53

Fingersmith
The Goldfinch

@CarlottaValdez - I didn't know it was a novel first. The film is extraordinary. I'd like to read it.

cariadlet · 19/12/2020 23:46

Definitely Fingersmith. The twist literally took my breath away. I've never had such a physical reaction to a book.

cricketmum84 · 19/12/2020 22:19

Never let me go

Hit me right in the gut

Also - we need to talk about Kevin x
