I've recently started re-reading books I read as a child and teenager, having a fantastic time doing it so thought I'd share, would love to hear your books! As you will see there is a strong Enid Blyton theme....

Famous Five (but not all of them)
Malory Towers
Faraway Tree
Goodnight Mr Tom
Black Beauty (who was this by?)
the Little HOuse on the Prairie series
Nancy Drew

Also sorry to add but what were the books were the girl broke her back on a swing, was it Anne of green gables or What Katy did? Or something else entirely?

havalina · 08/11/2007 23:33

OOh I loved the famous five, also a series by an author I can't remember, it featured 2 boys who were brothers who went on adventures to capture rare animals (think maybe one of them was called hal).
I also loved the silver sword and judy blume, must have missed the pony/ballet gene. Although
I did love the Sue Barton series. Seem to have gone from kids books straight to horror (my Mums influence) loved Stephen king et al.

bevjotom · 08/11/2007 22:33

mine was the borrowers,i loved it,think i might see if i can get it as it brings back lovely memories

I went to Hay-on-Wye this summer, and found this lovely shop (it's the pink one called 'Rose's Books').

It had second-hand copies of every single one of my favourite childhood books, including lots I'd forgotten about, all lovingly organised and displayed. It was heaven! I nearly bought the original hardback of Anne of Green Gables that I first borrowed from the library when I was 11 (even though I've got the whole lot in paperback at home) but had to restrain myself because it was thirty quid.

NAB3 · 28/09/2007 08:34

I bought it on Tuesday 2nd November 1982 and it has a coloured cover with Heidi holding some bluebells and stroking a goat. Grandpa and a boy are sat by a house in the distance.

mylastrolo · 27/09/2007 22:47

nabs Is it the one with wee sketches of heidi on the mountain and bearded Grandfather carving the chair red/pink cover!!

xXxamyxXx · 27/09/2007 21:04

loved malory towers and famous five oh and the secret garden was great

NAB3 · 27/09/2007 21:00

I still have my copy of Heidi from when I was about 10.

mylastrolo · 27/09/2007 19:29

For some reason 'Heidi' sticks in my mind.

NAB3 · 27/09/2007 18:43

I bought the abridged version for my daughter today. Now I am thinking she might be too young. She is 4. ????

thelady · 27/09/2007 18:36

tyaca · 27/09/2007 17:25

isn't fifteen an adults book written by a kid ;-)

stleger · 26/09/2007 18:25

I loved Fifteen!

tyaca · 26/09/2007 18:23

PL - could never get into Peter's Room, but then i never read Bronte, is it?

For the non-school stuff, Ready Made Family rates highest with me. but i confess to loving the term time stuff best - bring on cricket finals and end of term plays

great great books, shame she never finished the last. apparently she burnt it before she died as she wasn't happy with it. nicky and laurie were in 6th form ...

PondusLector · 25/09/2007 20:08

tyaca - another Antonia Forest fan here. They are superb books. Peter's Room is my favourite.

LieselVentouse · 24/09/2007 21:32

adrian mole

splishsplosh · 24/09/2007 20:44

Tyaca - thank you!

I have 2 sisters, 5years, and nearly 9 years older than me - we all loved reading so I think between us we built up a big collection of books. So turns out I have nearly all the books people here talk about. Except the pony books - none of us ever got into those for some reason

NAB3 · 24/09/2007 19:05

Black Beauty.

In fact I will buy it tomorrow if I remember.

woodyrocks · 24/09/2007 18:55

I used to love Judy Blume books.

Also 15 by Beverly Cleary (???) was a fave.

Does anyone remember a book called Mr. Nobody?

That book blew my mind! I also used to love poetry when i was younger and it has been easier to trace these and them to my library.

tyaca · 24/09/2007 17:36

ok Splish Splosh - i thought you were just an Antonia Forest fan - but you seem to be an all round mastermind on the subject.

i bow down in awe at such an expert in what I'd considered my specialist subject

splishsplosh · 24/09/2007 12:03

clutteredup - Charlotte Sometimes is by Penelope Farmer. I'm re-reading it now, and have just re-read Giant Under the Snow as well, because of this thread.

Bluecornflower - you may mean Moon of Gomrath & Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner, that had Colin and Susan in it.

RosaLuxembourg · 23/09/2007 23:20

Ruby Ferguson wrote the Jill books.

bookwormtailmum · 23/09/2007 21:14

I also read books about a girl called Jill, she rode horses which were called Black Boy (very pc!) and Rapide, her best friend was called Ann who didn't seem to have her own horse. Any ideas on author....?

clutteredup · 23/09/2007 21:06

There was one called Charlotte Sometimes about a time traveller, it really struck a chord with me. I don't know who wrote it and I guess it's out of print now, I loved it.

bookwormtailmum · 23/09/2007 21:05

I also loved reading a series of very old books which was about a girl who wanted to be a ballerina, forget the author now! Monica Dickens and Malcolm Saville were good once I'd grown out of Enid Blyton.
