@Orangecake123 and @Squigean

Dan Brown for me too- loved The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, the rest not so much.

@Blueemeraldagain, yes to Philippa Gregory as well.

I don't think we should feel too bad, when you look at the book section of supermarkets and see the utter formulaic shite that is churned out - there are basically three types of popular fiction these days

  1. Romances about cafes by the sea - pastel illustrated covers, curly font titles.
  2. Psychological thrillers - dark covers, three word titles (eg I See You, Back You Came), Yellow or orange titles
  3. Misery lit about harrowing childhoods

Literally millions must read these, because it's all supermarkets/bargain bookshops seem to sell.
Anything that tries to step out these would be "worthy" IMO

I love Agatha Christie, I admitted this to a group of work colleagues and got laughed at Blush I also occasionally buy a point horror second hand, but admit it to very few people!

I love rereading my old annuals. I find the children's ones (Judy, Jinty etc) more enjoyable to reread as an adult than my old teenage annuals (eg Jackie).

QueenOfTheSavages · 30/01/2020 17:07

Bunty, mandy and Judy annuals. Not that ashamed to be honest!

bettybattenburg · 30/01/2020 16:49

Jodi Picoult and Patricia Scanlan here too though I haven't read any for ages. Are they still writing?

@GeraldineFangedVagine you may like the black dagger brotherhood books by J R Ward, she's amazing

peanutbuttermarmite · 30/01/2020 16:45

I’m not sure I’ve read anything ‘respectable’ in a long time. I specialise in Scottish ‘historical’ romance - not outlander though, that was too schlocky even fro me.

I’ve read it all though...love Jilly Cooper - always read her when I’m down

GlennBulb · 30/01/2020 16:43

Patricia Scanlan Blush
When I'm ill and need an easy read

Deathraystare · 30/01/2020 16:41

Ok I will admit I used to enjoy Debbie McComber romance series, but if you tell my friends I will come around and cap your knees!

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 29/01/2020 20:49

I’m reading a Jodi Picoult right now, first one in ages.

It’s like chatting to an old friend (although it is about a high school shooting!); familiar territory and an easy read. I’m tempted to catch up with her others that I’ve missed...

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 26/01/2020 12:40

I'm reading my way through Game of Thrones.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 26/01/2020 12:38

I’m currently reading a book by Rachel Johnson

1066vegan · 26/01/2020 12:30

None!

If something is badly written then I won't bother with anything else by that author. But I'll give most authors a go.

I read a huge range of books including "respected" prize winning writers that get good reviews in newspapers, on Radio 4 etc but also lots of genre fiction (crime, fantasy, YA etc). I'm not embarrassed of any of it.

Cohle · 26/01/2020 12:24

Regency romance novels, of the crap Georgette Heyer knock off variety but generally smuttier.

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2020 12:22

Sophie Kinsella, especially the Shopaholic books.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 26/01/2020 12:14

Oh gosh yes, Jodi Picoult for me too. I agree with a poster above, very easy to read.

AnnaNotElsa · 25/01/2020 18:38

Lee Child! Love a bit of Jack Reacher!

Squigean · 25/01/2020 07:15

Another for Dan Brown.

I know we're supposed to hate him, but I find them entertaining. Don't know the order so I'm off to find out which one book four is.

Yestermost · 25/01/2020 07:10

Jodi Picolt. Formulaic issue drama. So easy to read.

Hemlock2013 · 25/01/2020 07:03

Can’t get enough georgette heyer here. I get totally lost in them. It’s so good for stress!

WitchSharkadder · 24/01/2020 20:56

@Muddlingalongalone, I absolutely loved the BSC! I still have my full collection from childhood and none of my boys are remotely interested so I've been thinking about just reading them myself. This thread has inspired me to do it! 😁

Letseatgrandma · 24/01/2020 20:21

Yes, Jilly of the Cooper here!

weebarra · 24/01/2020 20:18

Lots of urban fantasy - Kelley Armstrong, Ilona Andrews, Melissa Olson!

Sparkletastic · 24/01/2020 20:13

Jill Mansell
Bloody love Blush

Papergirl1968 · 24/01/2020 20:09
