I recently read The Earth abides. Since then I have read the Last Light trilogy, How I live now and Empty World. Can anyone recommend something similar? There something about surviving and starting again that I just really enjoy reading about.

on the beach by Nevil Shute
its an old one written the fifties supposedly taking place in the sixties after nuclear war - the northern hemisphere has no survivors & the radiation is drifting south - there was an updated film which is done in section made in 2010 on you tube (by the way there are lot of short films produced by DUST sci fi worth looking at)

Riddley Walker by Russel Hoban
A Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter M Miller Jr

Both must-reads if you like post apocalypse fiction.

I second Swan Song, The Stand and Station Eleven. Also The Dead Lands by Benjamin Percy is great, lots of good images in it.

I've just finished reading Before and After by Andrew Shanahan. One man and his dog, post apocalyptic, weight loss and zombies. I'm not a fan of zombie books but this one had me hooked. I hope there is a follow up. Free to read in kindle unlimited.

I loved station eleven, even in the current world situation. Anything else like that based on a pandemic In the modern world?

Look out for speculative dystopian: The Waiting Rooms by Eve Smith, coming May 2020!

There is antibiotic resistance, the world is in lockdown, police are stamping on anyone who infringes tight bacterial control. It takes place around now and COULD be our future!

@RoryGillmoresEvilTwin that's a great list thank you. I haven't got started on any of the books on this post yet as I had two to read and review on Netgalley which I have now done - it feels like homework sometimes.

I really loved Soon by Lois Murphy. That’s a good list, rory, I’ve read about 50% of them and am game for the others.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 08/02/2020 13:59

I also really enjoyed Yesterdays gone series by Sean Platt and David Wright (I think).

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 08/02/2020 13:57

I'm working my way through this list. It's fairly comprehensive and a lot of the suggested titles are on it.

I loved the Bob series, the first one is We are Legion (We are Bob), it's post apocalyptic although it's mostly set in space so it might not be what you're looking for. It's one that's worth listening to over reading if you ever listen to books as it's told in the first person.

I also have recently enjoyed the Zone War series by John Conroe, not exactly a world apocalypse but about the aftermath of Manhattan being completely wiped out by drones.

TheNavigator · 22/01/2020 20:33

I've just finished Station11 and I thoroughly recommend.

I also recommend Margaret Atwood's Maddaddam trilogy - I particularly liked The Year of the Flood.

Thanks magissa!

I have been meaning to read The Handmaid's Tale for ages. I have read 1984 but years ago. Definitely worth another read at some point. Well with my current list I'm on track for at least 60 books in a year (upping my game - I did 53 last year) Smile

Oh god I saw the title and thought I’d be a smarty pants and recommend The Earth Abides Confused. I know that these are maybe not what you’re thinking but The Handmaids Tale and 1984 are both gripping.

Jux · 22/01/2020 15:22

I loved Oryx and Crake. I've read a lot of sci fi/dystopian stuff over the last 50odd years. There are so many......

Magissa · 22/01/2020 13:39

@fishonabicycle Last Light is by Alex Scarrow. The second is Afterlight. I have no idea why I wrote trilogy! There are only two though for some reason in my head there are three!
Last light seemed so believable to me when I first read it. I think I am a closet prepper. Blush

**Demon cycle - Peter V Brett

Talcott2007 · 22/01/2020 11:50

News Flesh Series - Mira Grant
Red Rising Series - Pierce Brown
The Passage Trilogy - Justin Cronin

The Demon Cycle Series (more fantasy but my favorite series of all time so I always recommend it on basically every list!)

fishonabicycle · 22/01/2020 11:26

I can't find the Last Light trilogy - who wrote that please? I love a dystopia!

lastqueenofscotland · 21/01/2020 10:24

Oryx and Crake or The Heart Goes Last both by Margaret Atwood

Woodifer · 20/01/2020 20:44

A Lovely Way to Burn by louise welsh - I only found it becaue I loved her book the cutting room and was looking to see what else she had written

Magissa · 19/01/2020 19:38

Thank you so much for all the ideas.
I really enjoyed the John Christopher book Empty World. I will definitely try the Death of Grass. Dog Stars also sounds promising. I had forgotten about The End of the World running club, someone else mentioned it recently as being really good.
Station Eleven sounds interesting. I will definitely try that. In fact I have put every book mentioned here on my Amazon list. Smile
