What is everyone reading?

I got this set of classic travel writing things from The Book People for dh and have started on them myself. All little pocket volumes (not very challenging) but lots of food for thought.

That Herodotus did enjoy a good yarn.

Hi I'm new to the book club but this afternoon I've just finished reading Therese Raquin by Emile Zola - please do not read it if your looking for a book to cheer you up because there's not really one happy moment in it but I found in really good and it only took me a week to read which is the quickest I've read a book recently. The other book I'm reading is One Unknown by Gill Hicks (Survivor of the London Bombings) I think I cry everytime I read it sometimes because its very moving and other times because its funny. IMO Gill Hicks is a truly inspirational and amazing lady and has written an excellent book

Hi All, new to the site - kind of, so just wanted to say hi! I have a DS who's 2 and 1/2 and am pregnant due Jan 2008.
If you haven't read them I highly reccommend the Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Brilliant!! (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass). His other books are pretty gripping too.

Tigi, I just read that too. I struggled a bit at first, but loved the ending. Brilliant!

Currently reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck, which is beautiful (and quite short which is another bonus). And before that I read Chart Throb by Ben Elton - vital to read this before X Factor starts again if you haven't already...
Just scanned thread and I second the recommendations of Barbara Kingsolver and The God of Small Things.
I started Cloud Atlas in January 2006 and still haven't finished it.

just finished salmon fishing in the yemen! A richard and Judy one - very different to what I'd normally go for, but it jumped off the shelf to me, and I did enjoy it (dh looked oddly when I produced it from bag though!)

just finished angels crest by lesley schwartz is compared to the lovely bones on the cover but thought it was much better very moving

I've just started the Bill Bryson one today. Looks good so far.

Just staretd The Last Secret Of The Temple by Philip Sussman. 100 pages in and its very good.

Just finished Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani. A light read which I found plodded a bit at the beginning but I enjoyed it so much by the end I ordered the other 2 in the trilogy.

Just started Englands Mistress by Kate Williams - a book about Emma Hamilton.

I also have half a yellow sun on my 'to be read' shelf along with the Mark Haddon new one and many other books I have just found having unpacked my books after 9 months in packing cases. Must read more and buy less.

Just about to start Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair. Just finished "The Five Poeple you Meet in Heaven" and "For One More Day"

Speedymama, yes you will. Not so much for the excellent novellas themselves but more for the incredibly moving story of their writer, her family, and how the manuscripts came to be published.

Mumsnet by some parenting type people.

It's ok. It has a bit of everything for everyone I feel. Violence, sex, humour (kind of), debates, fashion, relationships etc. But it's a bit too, mumsy, for me.

MrsW - it's non-fiction this new one; an account of she and her husband and their 2 daughters' year of sustainable living. I do recommend it

So. my chewing for the brain is Pip by Freya North. A colleague gave it to me and taxing it is not.

ladymac - I loved that book too!! Twas a truly lovely read. Then read The Mermaids Chair (same author) and it was a disappointment really.

I am reading 3 novels in one at the moment by Robert Crais ... Elvis Cole Detective ones ... fun, fast and not too heavy.

Want to read Rupert Everett's autobiography soon, for a bit of fun...

oh and before that I read Achtung Schweinhund by Harry Pearson, which was quite funny (though not his best).

I've just finished The Raft, which is a book from 1942 about some US airmen whose plane crashed in the Pacific, and am now reading QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter by Richard Feynman. Can you tell I don't much like reading modern fiction?
