Oooh! Puffin Club. Me and my brother were members. We both won something - I got a puffin chess set and book (still can't play chess to save my life ) but can't remember what won it!
We went to a Puffin Club event once - all v arty and crafty, and I met the illustrator Jan Pienowski who signed my Joan Aitken book with a little silouette mouse! Still treasure it.

Ah...Fat Puffin! /nostalgia.

Wow. DS is only 16 months old though, think I might have to subscribe for myself!

I also had a subscription for some years to an American children's book magazine called Cricket which was wonderful (think initially it was in the UK as well).

nooka · 28/09/2008 21:01

I can't see how the worldwide mark up can be justified though. I might ask my mum to subscribe for the children and then send it on to us though.

We all belonged to Puffin club, but then most of the best children's books were Puffins then. We went to the summer events (fab, full of loads and loads of kids doing very educational things and having a whale of a time) I also went on a Colony Holiday, and it really was fab (and I was the sort of kid who always had her nose in a book because it was safe there). I never won anything though My big sister did however she was actually quite artistic...

Remember Fat Puffin anyone?
I had loads of fat puffin footprints from a Christmas Party in Ilkley where we met William Mayne - I stuck them all round my bedroom!

tissy · 28/09/2008 20:23

wahey!

I once one a competition in Puffin Post- drew a picture of my family and won a HUGE box of pens, crayons, pencils and art materials.

Dd will be getting a subscription.

hurrah - thank you for the link, I saw this in the Bookseller and it implied that the pre-launch offer was going to be via the Book People's mailing list only (which I'm on too, I'm just very impatient).

mrsbabookaloo · 22/09/2008 22:38

Oh goody. I thought I was alone and nobody cared about it except me.

auntyspan · 22/09/2008 13:14

Ahhhhh yes Puffin Post - my big sister subscribed and I was in the magazine for the younger readers - was it called The Egg??

Hurrah!

I was a member, along with my brother and sister and I remember (and must still have in some books) the "from the library of" stickers.

I remember we received a magazine and badges but apart from that, my only memory is going to some Puffin Club convention in London where you could meet authors and I met an elderly woman whose name escapes me but she wrote stories about a little old lady who lived with her cats. Anyone got a clue which books I am talking about?

ArcticRoll · 06/09/2007 19:49

Wow blast from the past.
margoand gerry- I had those 'From the library of..' stickers too and was very excited.
Gosh what an innocent age; can't imagine my dc getting excited about such things- from Puffin Club to Club Penguin.

mimoo · 06/09/2007 19:43

MaryAnnSingleton · 29/07/2007 17:25

Puffin Post, gosh there's a memory I'd hidden away!! I loved it!

Mum used to take me to London when they had their big event, I would proudly wear my badge and I still have my Roald Dahl autograph and Quentin Blake. It was brilliant.

MuminBrum · 27/07/2007 21:41

I won a comp too! I have some annuals but I don't think I have any of the mags anymore, sadly. I longed to go on a colony holiday - as a reserved, bookish child myself, I always imagined they would be a bit of a lifeline, just as VonSudenfed says. I met Kaye Webb at one of Puffin's summer does - she was lovely, a sort of dream grandma figure. I met Quentin Blake too, my favourite illustrator. Happy days!

margoandjerry · 27/07/2007 21:31

Oh my god! Puffin Post!!!! Sorry to be so late to this but !!!!!!!!

I loved this. I won a prize too, for writing a poem which I think was something to do with eating an orange and getting sticky. Anyone remember that masterpiece?

I think my prize was some of those "From the library of...." stickers to stick in the front of your books. Except I didn't understand and I wrote the name of the publisher in the space

I was looking at my copy of The Animal Family only yesterday as it happens (and wondering if Kaye Web ever knew how much impact she was having - she should have been Dame Kaye surely?). On the front page (I am going to say the word frontispiece without really knowing what it means...) is a "From the library of...." sticker, with "Puffin Books" written in my 9 year old joined up handwriting!

treacletart · 22/07/2007 19:20

Yay! was begining to think I'd misremembered the secret password! I also remember a little secret handbook (pink? I think?) and going to some sort of special Puffin anniversary celebration in the Mall somewhere and writing something embarassing about Abba to put in a time capsule
