I always like to read books set where I travel.

If you could recommend 2 set in Maine and Cape Cod too that would be great.Smile

The Hustvedt novel was called What I loved, not What Was Lost.

More New York novels: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.

Has anyone suggested Olive Kitteridge for Maine? It also has a bit set in New York.

We Were Liars by E Lockhart is set on an island off Cape Cod.

For New York, What Was Lost by Siri Hustvedt, or New York Trilogy by her husband, Paul Auster. Or a classic like The Age of Innocence or The Great Gatsby.

84 Charing Cross Road - Helene Hanff

Teddybear45 · 18/05/2019 17:16

Gossip Girl

If you enjoy crime and sleazy politics, you may enjoy the novels by the late, great George V Higgins which are set in a city not unlike Boston. Books can be difficult to get hold of as now OOP in the UK; maybe worth looking for secondhand. He's brilliant at dialogue, but you have to read attentively.

Chickenpie9 · 14/05/2019 16:17

Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk is set in New York in the late 1930s and is quite entertaining

Rua13 · 06/05/2019 18:40

Empire Falls by Richard Russo is set in Maine. Also Courtney Sullivan's Maine.

I recently read the Good House by Ann Leary which is set in Mass. It's set in a small town outside Boston that has become gentrified and the relationship between the rich incomers and the locals.

Paul Auster has a lot of books that are set in New York.

The State Union - Douglas Kennedy is set in Maine

Homefireburn1ng · 14/04/2019 15:10

For New York, Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk is a lovely book, quite unusual and interesting. I don’t remember the author ‘s name. Very much about the city and life in it.

heatherblue · 14/04/2019 14:23

The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
Rules of Civility - Amor Towles

Homefireburn1ng · 14/04/2019 14:22

Read Goldfinch

Toying with Cider House but is it coastal Maine or more inland?Aldo wondering if I’ve read it, would be a disaster if I lugged it there and realised I had half way through.Grin

The Cider House Rules by John Irving is set in Maine. First book I read by him and utterly fabulous.

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. Location is obvious!

Nemesis by Philip Roth is set in Newark, which is NY State. Another fabulous book.

Dapplegrey · 14/04/2019 14:15

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is set partly (mostly?) in New York.

Homefireburn1ng · 14/04/2019 14:05

Read that Grin

Cornishblues · 14/04/2019 12:47

Olive Kitteridge I think is set in Maine.

Homefireburn1ng · 14/04/2019 12:04

Fab that’s Cape Cod sorted. So many options re NYC. Maine still proving elusive. Don’t like Stephen King and read Courtney Sullivan’s Maine which would have been ideal.Grin

I've read The Giant's House and really enjoyed it, it would be a good holiday read.

chocolategivesmehives · 14/04/2019 10:44

Helene Hanff’s ‘Apple of my Eye’ and ‘Underfoot in Shiw Business’, and obviously 84 Charing Cross Road.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Tama Janowicz’s ‘Slaves of New York’ - hilariously eighties.

The Great Gatsby

Lots of Henry James / Edith Wharton

Auntie Mame

More New England than specifically Maine or Cape Cod

Little Women

Practical Magic

Ethan Frome

Cider House Rules

Witches of Eastwick
