Today has been the worst day. Please recommend me a book that is funny and light hearted. I have just looked in my to read pile and they are all heavy psychological thrillers. Thanks!

Another vote for the tent, the bucket and me - so very funny and easy to dip in and out of if your attention span is low (mine always is when I'm having a rough time, at those times I just need light & easy!).

I've read it twice now and it's on the shelf for future reads and I rarely read a book twice!

The main character in Diary is like a Victorian David Brent, he has no idea how funny his diary entries are! It never seems to date.

WaterBird · 21/11/2018 23:56

I just got Diary of a Nobody, but haven't read it yet.
I'm a little surprised the book was written in 1910. i just thought by the name that it would be a lot more modern.

Any Bill Bryson!

Roystonv · 21/11/2018 14:23

AC maybe not funny but I do use them for escape when needed, her early ones are best

Roystonv · 21/11/2018 14:21

Cold Comfort Farm, most Agatha Christie

Clawdy · 21/11/2018 14:18

Another vote here for Diary Of A Nobody. Hilarious.

"Hot Mess: Bridget Jones of a New Generation" by Lucy Vine. Really, really funny.

Spoonbenders is great

Pixel99 · 13/11/2018 23:10

A different Bill Bryson - "Notes from a Small Island" and if you love cats "The cat who came in from the cold" -Deric Longden.

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome.
The funniest book I've ever read.

This is going to hurt. (Unless you're squeamish). Funny, yet poignant.

thetigerthatcamefortea · 11/10/2018 22:09

Also Eleanor oliphant. Best book I have read in ages.
Made me cry in places but also made me howl with laughing. It will stay with me for a long time

wherehavealltheflowersgone · 11/10/2018 22:08

Eleanor Oliphant made me laugh out loud in places

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/10/2018 22:07

1066 and All That makes me laugh like a drain but only really works if you have a vague idea of British history and a tolerance for imperialist attitudes (which I do, while also knowing that makes me a Bad Thing).

Chelsea26 · 11/10/2018 22:05

‘Round Ireland with a fridge or any bill bryson

hoistmeupjudy · 11/10/2018 22:00

Where'd you go Bernadette? By Maria Semple. My favourite epistolary novel!
