I don't like any of your 'NO' list either

I would also add to that 'no books where the whole point is a Family Secret Being Uncovered that you couldn't give a toss about anyways'

Kate Pullinger's A Little Stranger is good

Also any stories by Alice Munro or Helen Simpson

have just read Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris that is a daft old romp you might like that

have not read for a while I admit have been ploughing through something by David Mitchell which was v good but hard going as it kept starting all over again

The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen

The biog of Georgiana Duchess of Devonshie (old so you've possibly read it)

The Kite Runner - or is that too Asian?

I'll have a think about some more....

suzywong · 20/05/2007 11:47

Atonement, Ian McEwan

Like Water for Chocolate, similar to Allende
