The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera

AliPfefferman · 01/01/2018 04:44

A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara

It’s probably not my favorite ever EVER but it is the best and most memorable book I’ve read in recent years.

Kuriusoranj · 01/01/2018 04:21

Ken Grimwood: Replay.

It gives me comfort and strength at a level no other work of art in any form has one.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/01/2018 03:07

Phantom by Susan Kay
The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher
The Distant Hours by Kate Morton (anything by her actually)

These are my comfort reads, that I have read over and over again.

The Left Hand Of Darkness (Le Guin)
Pride and Prejudice
Guns Germs and Steel (non fiction)

Rhynswynd · 01/01/2018 02:40

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 01/01/2018 02:01

The Secret History
I capture the castle
The name of the rose

Playmobilpeacock · 01/01/2018 01:57

Brideshead Revisited would be my desert island book.

If Gone Girl is your absolute number 1 book of all time, you need to read more.

MiniMum97 · 01/01/2018 01:41

I loved Gone Girl!
Also Captain Corelli's and Atonement.

INeedToEat · 01/01/2018 00:16

Gump & Co - the follow up to Forrest Gump.
Memoirs of a Geisha.
A long way down.
The Martian.

TooMinty · 31/12/2017 23:35

Not my number one book ever, but I just read The Bees by Laline Paull and I really enjoyed it. A bit sci-fi but not too far stretched.

Theonlyoneiknow · 31/12/2017 23:32

Would need a proper think but off the top of my head Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

Synecdoche · 31/12/2017 23:25

Narziss and Goldmund by Herman Hesse - I couldn't put it down!

Or 1984 by George Orwell. Brilliant.

pterobore · 31/12/2017 23:15

Catch 22

cathyclown · 31/12/2017 23:14

Just this year....

Eleanor Oliphant

What a complete Aisling

Read in one session each.

Not high literature, but who wants that all the time either.

In the past,

A man called Ove
An utterly impartial history of Britain
Rose of Sarajevo
Life after life.

There are so many more. Too many books, so little time.

BlazingPaddles · 31/12/2017 23:08

A book I have read more than five times is Hangover Square. Bleak but beautiful.

BlazingPaddles · 31/12/2017 23:07

Gone Girl was a dull old slog for me. And I only made it half way through.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 31/12/2017 23:05

I second Shogun. Superb.
Also any Robert Crais or Carl Hiaasen for laughs.

NotEnoughCushions · 31/12/2017 23:05

Doctors by Eric Segal. Read it when I was at college and still go back to it occasionally as comfort reading.

TigerBreadAddict · 31/12/2017 23:05

Little Women!
