Can I start a thread about nostalgic Young Adult/Children's books we used to read in the 80s/90s?

I love going to second hand bookshops or charity shops and browsing the children's sections to see if I can spot any books I used to love reading then?

I used to love anything by Jean Ure, (anyone remember the Peter High school series she wrote?) Anne Digby's Trebizon series, Noel Streatfield, Antonia Forrest's school books with the Marlowes, and endless pony books by Patricia Leitch (anyone remember Jinny and her Arab horse Shantih?) Also went through a serious Sweet Valley phase...goodness knows why, looking back those books were full of fat shaming and bitchiness!

Lots of these bring back great memories - I also loved the Nancy Drew Mysteries, Judy Blume, Point Horror, Christopher Pike and the fantasy choose your own adventures.

As a teen, I remember reading books from the Sweet Dreams series (teen romance) but I also raided my parents' books. Catherine Cookson, Jilly Cooper, Jackie Collins and then I graduated into adult horror/fantasy too like Stephen King, Anne Rice, Dean Koontz.

I don't remember there being so much marketed as specifically for young adults compared to now.

I was still a pre teen at the end of the 90's but I loved the Kevin and Sadie series too.

Also Dear Nobody by Berlie Doherty and A little love song by Michelle Magorian were favourites.

Gosh, all of these! Did I do anything else other than read crap books? Grin

Point Horror was the best. I still remember April Fools. Girl is involved in car accident. Girl is then employed to tutor somebody who was burned in same car accident. Girl keeps running out crying x 500. Book ends.

Loved Jean Ure (still do: she's underrated as a writer.)

Jinny was fabulous, although I think Patricia Leitch may have been smoking a little of what Ken had in the pottery house for some of them Grin I love the character of Jinny to this day though. Fabulous role model, looking back. Galloping around the moors alone, not giving a shit about makeup or clothes or any of that crap. Hope she married Ken.

Ridingthegravytrain · 23/11/2017 19:57

I Think it was scavenger hunt by Christopher pike

Ridingthegravytrain · 23/11/2017 19:47

I loved all the Judy Blume and my mum hated me reading them. She confiscated on book, called wifey, not sure who wrote it. I do remember it being racy! She hid it in the wardrobe though so I finished it Grin

Also loved sci fi. There was a great book called urn burial again don’t recall who wrote it

And loved the point horror. giraffe yes I do remember that book with the caves and acid. I’m going to have to google it

Hey Dollface and Second Star to the Right are brilliant. I can picture the covers of my editions now!

Bucketsandspoons · 23/11/2017 19:46

Coffee I just found Second Star to the Right! It's by Deborah Hautzinger. I haven't read it in 30 years but remember it so vividly.

CoffeeAndEnnui · 23/11/2017 19:45

Jinx, Buckets!

CoffeeAndEnnui · 23/11/2017 19:42

What a lovely nostalgic thread! It is bringing back so many beloved stories to me.

I was particularly obsessed with the Pan Horizon books which had red and blue rectangles (like the Studio Line pots) in the logo. These few below, which have always stuck with me, I will be tracking down for my daughter along with every word Judy Blume ever wrote and the massive stash of SVH books currently hoarded under my bed:

Night Kites
Hey Dollface
Second Star to the Right

Bucketsandspoons · 23/11/2017 19:42

Oooh I remember Sue Barton! I loved Playing Beatie Bow too. And Flambards, and the awful Flowers in the Attic.

I still love David Eddings and frequently go back to Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar books. The Box of Delights, The Children of Green Knowe and anything by Dianna Wynne Jones, I recently found a copy of Ursula Moray Williams 'Bogwoppit' which I loved, and Dear Shrink by Helen Cresswell.

There was one in the school library that left a big impression, Second Star to the Right, about a girl with anorexia whose family were still dealing generations later with the aftermath of the holocaust.

Papergirl1968 · 23/11/2017 19:34

I loved PS I Love You, Perfume

PerfumeIsAMessage · 23/11/2017 19:25

Many of the above, all the horse ones, Sue Barton (which I thought was very grown up!), Nancy Drew etc.

One I still have is called PS I love you about a boy who died and his girlfriend. We all sobbed and lent it to our mothers who all sobbed too.

gastropod · 23/11/2017 19:20

I loved Hanging out with Cici!

And Stranger with My Face, by Lois Duncan. Read that one a dozen times I think... I was desperate to be part Navajo!

And I remember a truly awful creepy book called the Corn Dolly that gave me nightmares for ages.

BroomstickOfLove · 23/11/2017 18:19

You know that there are a couple of adult, ten years later Sweet Valley High books, right?

CurlsandCurves- try Private Keep Out by Gwen Grant and sequel Knock and Wait.

CurlsandCurves · 23/11/2017 16:49

Francine Pascal ‘Hanging out with Cici’ anyone else read this? I loved it.

There was another book series, set in the North of England written from a daughters point of view, she was part of a large family and always getting into trouble. Then in the next book she was ill and in a hospital. She made friends with another girl and they got into all kinds of scrapes together! Can’t for the life of me think what it was called...

endehors · 23/11/2017 16:40

Tanis not Tania. Bloody autocorrect!

endehors · 23/11/2017 16:39

Twins" trilogy is epic smile
Oh yes! Raistlin and Tania. Have fond memories of reading those.

BabloHoney · 23/11/2017 16:35

This thread is brill! I loved the Christopher Pike books - I remember hiding under my duvet with a torch reading Chain Letter until the early hours when I was about 11 or 12, scared the absolute cr*p out of me, haha.

I also liked the Sweet Valley books though god knows why, Elizabeth was a feeble goodie 2 shoes and Jessica was a vacuous little brat!

MadMags · 23/11/2017 16:23

Fantasy book readers were bestowed with some incredible gifted masters of prose in the 80s/90/and just as good stretching into the first and second decades of this century.

Agreed!

SeriousSteve · 23/11/2017 16:21

Not forgetting the epic anthologies of R.A. Salvatore detailing the times and trial of Drizzt.

Fantasy book readers were bestowed with some incredible gifted masters of prose in the 80s/90/and just as good stretching into the first and second decades of this century.

SeriousSteve · 23/11/2017 16:18

Ahh, @MadMags and @endehors , you have impeccable taste. Ageee about Weis and Hickman too - the "Twins" trilogy is epic :)

If you haven't, you should absolutely check out Blelgarath the Sorceror and Polgara the Sorceress by David and Leigh Eddings :)

dontquotemeondailymail · 23/11/2017 12:31

Aristotles GrinGrin thank you, that’s the one!!

Seeline · 23/11/2017 09:18

I thought I had kept the whole series Papergirl but when I dug them out for my DD I discovered I only had a few, and none of the early ones - I think I must have borrowed those from the library. Can't seem to get hold of them any more Sad

endehors · 23/11/2017 07:59

Goodness! Flowers in the Attic series. I thought those were great at the time (they were doing the rounds at school). Tried to read again as an adult and they were dreadful in so many ways Grin
