Mine has to be this one...

Then she was pressing her little proud broken self against his face, as close as she could get, and then they died.

I cried so hard the three times I've read the book (I haven't put the name of the book in case of spoilers) - what lines got to you?

OP posts:

*Aslan, fucking autocorrect.

EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck · 18/10/2017 14:25

Oh no, and now Asian... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

quirkychick · 18/10/2017 14:24

noradust I loved (I think enjoyed might be the wrong word) The Road, the whole thing is heartbreaking and so beautifully written. Yes, that bit is particularly so.

Daffodil397 · 18/10/2017 14:22

Wow- memories of tears at Charlottes Web, Beth dying in Little Women, Matthew in Anne of Green Gables, getting through some tissues here! Also remember sobbing at the bit when Aslan the lion is killed in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
‘Between then they rolled the huge Lion over on his back and tied all his four paws together, shouting and cheering as if they had done something brave, though, had the Lion chosen, one of those paws could have been the death of them all. But he made no noise, even when the enemies, straining and tugging, pulled the cords so tight that they cut into his flesh. Then they began to drag him to the Stone Table.’ SadSadSad

‘’and the pieces all joined together, and the paper dolls flew...
into the little girl’s memory
where they found white mice and fireworks,
and a starfish soap,
and a kind granny,
and the butterfly hair slide,
and more and more lovely things each day
and each year’’

The Paperdolls by Julia Donaldson. I lost my Grandma this year and it’s gets me every time 😪

From King Lear: "No, no, no life!"

The House at Pooh Corner one mentioned upthread. The jarring end of Anne Frank's diary. There are too many.

"That was all he had to do." - Absalom, Absalom!

But the winner for me is Cormac McCarthy's The Road (I don't know if this counts as a spoiler). Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Is it real? The fire?
Yes it is.
Where is it? I dont know where it is.
Yes you do. It's inside you. It was always there. I can see it.
Just take me with you. Please.
I cant.
Please, Papa.
I cant. I cant hold my son dead in my arms. I thought I could but I cant. You said you wouldnt ever leave me.
I know. I'm sorry. You have my whole heart. You always did. You're the best guy. You always were. If I'm not here you can still talk to me. You can talk to me and I'll talk to you. You'll see.

Yerroblemom1923 · 18/10/2017 12:20

I can't read the Little Match Girl without crying, also when Charlotte dies in Charlotte's Web. There's also a short story in Michael Morpurgo's From Hereabout Hill anthology that gets me every time.

EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck · 18/10/2017 12:10

Oh no Baggypants, there I go again. 😭😭😭😭

BaggypantsCrimplesnitch · 18/10/2017 12:06

I'm glad some of you - enjoyed? Is that the right word? The Two-Headed Calf.

Another line that always made me cry was in Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter. I haven't read it for ages, so this may not be word perfect, but Tarka mates with an elderly female, Greymuzzle, and she has a single pup, but because of her age and because it's the wrong time of year she can't take care of it properly.

Later on in the book Tarka returns to the area and spends the night in the same holt on a bed of dry reeds "on which there lay bones, and a little skull." Sad

Um, not sure how to post this without spoiling, but when a main character's elder brother dies in Harry Potter.

quirkychick · 18/10/2017 11:50

Oh, the Happy Prince! Misnamed, it's so sad... they used to show an animation of it every Christmas .

A lot of these children's books are a hundred times worse if you read them aloud to your dcs.

Have you ever stayed in a place where you wanted someone who didn't want you? Well don't, never do. Get out. Don't stay in a place where you want someone who doesn't... etc.

Bulletfish Help me out: I recognise this, but can't quite place it... is it by Martin Amis? Smile

chickensaresafehere · 18/10/2017 10:13

Oh and 'On the night you were born' by Nancy Tillman.

So whenever you doubt just how special you are
and wonder who loves you,how much & how far,
listen for geese honking high in the sky
(They're singing a song to remember you by).

He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front. He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.

Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front

Many passages from 'The hen who dreamed she could fly' by Sun-Mi Hwang.
It may be about a chicken escaping from a battery farm but the parallels to a mother & her child are beautiful.
'Sprout felt her heart tearing in two.Her sorrow each time her eggs were taken away was nothing compared to how she felt now.Sobs filled her throat, her entire body stiffened.
''Poor thing came out without a shell''.The farmer tossed the soft shell egg into the yard, bracing herself,Sprout squeezed her eyes shut.
The egg broke without a word .The old dog lumbered over to lick it up.Tears flowedfreely from Sprouts eyesfor the first time in her life.
I refuse to lay another egg! Ever!'

CoffeeChocolateWine · 18/10/2017 09:45

He knew it would come, and soon, maybe even this 12.07. The moment she would slip from his grasp, no matter how tightly he held on.
But not this moment, the monster whispered, still close. Not just yet.
Conor held tightly onto his mother.
And by doing so, he could finally let her go.

My eyes are wet just typing it Sad

Clawdy · 18/10/2017 09:33

The Two headed Calf......Sad never heard it before, now can't forget it.

mapie · 18/10/2017 08:48

Baggypants That will stay with me forever, I can see it in my mind.

Lollyb86 · 18/10/2017 07:18

I'm rightly tired of the pain I hear and feel, boss. I'm tired of bein on the road, lonely as a robin in the rain. Not never havin no buddy to go on with or tell me where we's comin from or goin to or why. I'm tired of people bein ugly to each other. It feels like pieces of glass in my head. I'm tired of all the times I've wanted to help and couldn't. I'm tired of bein in the dark. Mostly it's the pain. There's too much. If I could end it, I would. But I can't.

Time takes it all, whether you want it to or not. Time takes it all, time bears it away, and in the end there is only darkness. Sometimes we find others in that darkness, and sometimes we lose them there again.

Both from The Green Mile Stephen King

“These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence: the connections-sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent-that happened after I was gone. And I began to see things in a way that let me hold the world without me in it.”

― Alice Sebold,The Lovely Bones

‘Well, I’m back’ at the end of LOTR gets me every time

And a line quoted by Jilly Cooper ‘Do not weep, little dog, for at the resurrection thou too will have a golden tail’ - read it after I lost my gorgeous waggy boy and howled.
